ABSTRACTAs Bednorz and Muller noted in their original publication reporting on the discovery of high temperature superconductivity, their oxides present many of the features of granular superconductors. This behavior was first primarily ascribed to poor connectivity of the grains in the bulk ceramic samples. but later studies have pointed out to more fundamental reasons for these similarities. We will discuss them after first reviewing the well established properties of low Tc granular superconductors.

Effects of electric field-amplitude and mechanical stress on hysteresis area were investigated in partially depoled hard PZT bulk ceramic. At any compressive stress, the hysteresis area was found to depend on the field-amplitude with a same set of exponents to the power-law scaling. Consequently, inclusion of compressive stresses into the power-law was also obtained in the form of < A – Aσ=0 > α E05.1σ1.19 which indicated the difference of the energy dissipation between the under-stress and stress-free conditions.

This work simultaneously achieved a large temperature change (ΔT, ∼0.70 K) at room temperature and ultra-stable ΔT(±1.4% variation between 300 K with 380 K) in 0.78NaNbO3–0.22BaTiO3bulk ceramic.

We have investigated the Ca -doping effects on the structural, electrical and magnetic properties of ( Pb 0.5 Cu 0.5) Sr 2( Pr 1-x Ca x Cu 2 O z( x =0-0.5) bulk ceramic samples. The electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power and magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that the Ca doping introduces holes into the system and thereby superconductivity with onset T c, of about 36 K is induced for a phase with x =0.5. These results are discussed in conjunction with the roles of hole doping, structural changes and Pr - O hybridization in CuO 2 layers.
