In this study, the solid-state reaction to form Mg2Si bulky materials via spark plasma sintering (SPS) process was discussed. Elemental powder mixture of Mg-33.33mol%Si was refined and consolidated as green compacts by repeated plastic working (RPW) SPS was performed to synthesize and sinter magnesium silicide at 1100K from the RPWed compact. The only peaks of Mg2Si, not Mg and Si, were detected by X-ray diffraction analysis. Mg2Si bulky intermetallic began to shrink above 800K during SPS process, and its densification significantly occurred. The density of SPSed Mg2Si bulk material is about 100% of the theoretically relative one.

Aluminium metal matrix composites (AMMCs) are being considered as a group of superior material for its lightness, strength, high specific modulus, low coefficient of thermal expansion and good wear resistance properties. Solid state and liquid state processing methods are used to fabricate AMMCs. Achieving a uniform distribution of reinforcement within the matrix is one such challenge, which affects directly on the properties and quality of composite material. Powder metallurgy route, one of the solid state processing methods can be effectively used to get uniform dispersion of reinforcements with aluminium metal matrix. This paper presents the summary of the ball milling and stir casting processes to fabricate the AMMCs and its applications. Major issues like ball milling time, dispersion of reinforcements, grain size, the stirring time and speed are discussed. Also the effect of different reinforcement for AMMCs on the mechanical properties is discussed in detail.

Materials and processing designs for advanced magnesium alloys with fine microstructures and superior properties were established by the combination of the repeated plastic working and the Mg2Si synthesis in solid-state. The grain size was less than 1 μm via RPW process due to its severe plastic working on raw powder. The hot extruded magnesium alloys produced in industries showed high ultimate tensile strength, e.g. 420~450MPa, when employing Mg-Zn-Al-Ca-RE (Rare Earth) alloy coarse powder, having 0.5~2 mm diameter, as input materials.

Samples of YBa2Cu3O7 were prepared by sol-gel, co-precipitation, and solid state processes. Sol-gel samples were prepared from a solution of yttrium, barium, and copper nitrates dissolved in ethylene glycol, co-precipitated samples were made by the amorphous citrate method, and solid state samples were prepared by conventional high temperature reaction of the appropriate metal oxides and carbonates. The sol-gel process was shown to yield superconducting samples of superior Meissner effect, critical current, and critical field. The co-precipitated samples contain impurities that affect the critical properties. The sol-gel and co-precipitated processes yield materials with well-formed, plate-like particles with a fairly uniform size of about 10 μm. The grains in the solid state sample are smaller but have a much wider distribution of sizes than the samples prepared by solution methods.
