The of this study aim was to develop a rapid method to determine the chemical composition, solvent evaporation rates, and polymerization kinetics of dental adhesives. Single-component, acetone-containing adhesives One-Step (OS; Bisco, USA), Optibond Universal (OU; Kerr, USA), and G-Bond (GB; GC, Japan) were studied. Filler levels were determined gravimetrically. Monomers and solvents were quantified by comparing their pure Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infra-Red (ATR–FTIR) spectra, summed in different ratios, with those of the adhesives. Spectral changes at 37 °C, throughout passive evaporation for 5 min, then polymerisation initiated by 20 s, and blue light emitting diode (LED) (600 mW/cm2) exposure (n = 3) were determined. Evaporation and polymerisation extent versus time and final changes were calculated using acetone (1360 cm−1) and methacrylate (1320 cm−1) peaks. OS, OU, and GB filler contents were 0, 9.6, and 5.3%. FTIR suggested OS and OU were Bis-GMA based, GB was urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) based, and that each had a different diluent and acidic monomers and possible UDMA/acetone interactions. Furthermore, initial acetone percentages were all 40−50%. After 5 min drying, they were 0% for OS and OU but 10% for GB. Whilst OS had no water, that in OU declined from 18 to 10% and in GB from 25 to 20% upon drying. Evaporation extents were 50% of final levels at 23, 25, and 113 s for OS, OU, and GB, respectively. Polymerisation extents were all 50 and 80% of final levels before 10 and at 20 s of light exposure, respectively. Final monomer polymerisation levels were 68, 69, and 88% for OS, OU, and GB, respectively. An appreciation of initial and final adhesive chemistry is important for understanding the properties. The rates of evaporation and polymerisation provide indications of relative required drying and light cure times. UDMA/acetone interactions might explain the considerably greater drying time of GB.

Abstract We investigate the junction temperature measurements for GaN-based blue light emitting diodes (LEDs) using nonlinear dependence of the forward voltage ( V f ) on temperature. Unlike the conventional linear model of the dependence of V f on temperature, the modeling of the temperature dependent V f with a quadratic function showed good agreements with measured data in the temperature range between 20 and 100 o C. Using the proposed quadratic model, the junction temperature and thermal resistance of the measured LED could be accurately determined as the ambient temperature varied. It was observed that the junction temperature increment remained almost unchanged as the ambient temperature increased from 20 to 80 o C, which could be attributed to the interplay between the decrease in series resistance and the increase in non-radiative recombination with increasing temperature. The presented method for accurate determination of the junction temperature is expected to be advantageously employed for the thermal management of high-power LEDs.

Photoelectric methods of measuring the activity of aquatic organisms allow unrestrained movement of the animal being studied but may disrupt exogenously controlled rhythms if the light is visible. An apparatus is described that uses infrared light-emitting diodes that eliminate some of the problems associated with incandescent light sources. A graph of the locomotor activity data of two pigfish (Orthopristis chrysoptera) which was produced by this apparatus is included.

In this study we reported the development and analytical validation of new assay for quantitative determination of free prostate-specific antigen, fPSA. It is formulated as one step, two-site "sandwich" immunoradiometric assay. Specificity of this assay was achieved by using epitope-1-reactive anti-fPSA antibody as tracer antibody. Assay was calibrated against first international standard 96/668, and its detection limit was determined as 0.08 mg/L. Intra- and inter-assay coefficients of variation were 3.42-7.53% and 7.04-8.33%, respectively. Measured concentrations of serially diluted serum samples were close to the calculated concentrations, indicating good linearity with recovery percentage ranging from 98.7-107.4%. Analytical performance characteristics of fPSA assay speaks in favor of its use as a reliable tool in laboratory diagnostics relating to prostate diseases.
