Abstract In the United States, the 37 colleges of osteopathic medicine and 154 schools of allopathic medicine face challenges in recruiting underrepresented minority (URM) applicants, and gaps in racial disparity appear to be widening. In this Special Communication, the authors describe a URM recruitment and support strategy undertaken in 2015 through a special interest group called Creating Osteopathic Minority Physicians who Achieve Scholastic Success (COMPASS) at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine—New York.

Context: The Aspiring DOctors PreCollege Program at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine Cleveland Campus is unique among other precollege pipeline and mini-medical school programs in that it engages learners from urban underserved communities for an entire academic year as a cocurricular adjunct to their high school course load. One day per month, students are brought to the medical college campus and introduced to the field of osteopathic medicine. Students also participate in activities related to preparing for college admissions, diversity in higher education, mental health and wellness, and financial stewardship. All these activities are done with the goal of increasing the number of underrepresented minority (URM) students in the health care professions. Objective: Self-efficacy has been identified as a measure of internal motivation and belief in one’s ability to succeed in the face of challenges. The purpose of this study is to determine what effect, if any, participation in this program has on URM student self-efficacy. Methods: Students were asked to complete a validated self-efficacy questionnaire at the start and end of this program to determine their levels of self-efficacy and if there were changes after participating in this program. Results: Ten of the 12 seniors completed pre- and post-self-efficacy surveys. Two main discoveries were made through this pilot. First, when tested at the beginning of the program, all students had high levels of self-efficacy (mean score, 4.45 of 5). Second, 2 items were specifically increased by a statistically significant amount. The students increased in self-efficacy concerning the responses “I can learn what is being taught in class this year” ( P = .024) and “My ability grows with effort” ( P = .015). Conclusions: With the competitive standards of acceptance into the Aspiring DOctors PreCollege Program, students enrolled in this program had high levels of self-efficacy from the onset. While there was modest increase across the board, many of these indicators remained consistently high after the program. Using self-efficacy as a screening tool for premedical students may be helpful in identifying candidates likely to succeed in a future medical career.

Abstract Context The Touro University California College of Osteopathic Medicine (TUCOM-CA) is one of many colleges of osteopathic medicine with osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) predoctoral teaching fellowship programs. OMM fellows serve as near-peer teachers for preclinical osteopathic medical students (OMS) at TUCOM-CA, with the objectives of increasing student satisfaction with and understanding of the OMM curriculum. Our aim was to assess whether the TUCOM-CA fellowship program has achieved these objectives. Methods All osteopathic medical students at TUCOM-CA were sent an electronic survey. The survey items queried: frequency of and type of interaction; impact on satisfaction with and understanding of the OMM curriculum; impact on confidence in using osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT); valuation of OMT and intention to use OMT in future clinical practice. Frequencies, means and standard deviations were calculated, omitting “no basis for evaluation” responses. Two-tailed Z-tests of proportions were utilized for analysis of statistical significance, with significance set at 95% (P<.05 ). Results In total, 156 of 538 (29.0%) responses were received, and 150 had sufficient data to analyze. Respondents reported varied rates and modes of interaction with OMM fellows (OMM lab table-training [97.3%] to early clinical experiences [30.9%]). Response means for items regarding satisfaction with and understanding of the OMM curriculum fell between “strongly agree” and “agree” for all activities. Many respondents (82.5%–83.8%) reported that interaction with OMM fellows increased their confidence in using OMT. Additionally, respondents who were treated with OMT by OMM fellows reported significantly higher agreement with statements about clinical utility of OMT (Z=2.6, P<.05) and intention to use OMT in future practice (Z=2.3, P<.05). Conclusions The majority of osteopathic medical students at TUCOM-CA reported significant agreement with the positive impact of interaction with OMM fellows on satisfaction with and understanding of the OMM curriculum. This supports the conclusion that the OMM predoctoral teaching fellowship program achieves its objectives to increase student satisfaction with and understanding of the OMM curriculum. The survey data also showed significantly stronger agreement with statements supporting valuation of OMT in clinical practice and intention to use OMT in the future, among respondents treated with OMT by OMM fellows.

<p class="abstract"><strong>Background:</strong> The thyroid ima artery (TIA) is an anatomical anomaly that commonly functions as an accessory blood supply for the isthmus and inferior aspect of the thyroid. Limited research has been performed to investigate the relative prevalence and clinical implications of the TIA in present literature.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Methods:</strong> Dissections were conducted on cadavers in the anatomy laboratory at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, New York (Harlem Campus), with 94 subjects examined using standard methods to identify thyroid vasculature and to determine the presence of a thyroid ima artery. Known origins of the thyroid ima artery were also examined for possible branching.  </p><p class="abstract"><strong>Results:</strong> Of the 94 cadavers, only one was found to have a thyroid ima artery present, suggesting a prevalence of 1.06 percent.</p><p class="abstract"><strong>Conclusions:</strong> The thyroid ima artery is significant in its influence in head and neck procedures as well as emergent airway creation. With its relative rarity, its presence is worthy of consideration as a possible hematological source for hemorrhage.</p>
