Aluminium alloys are widely used in the fields of automobile, machinery and naval construction. To investigate the effect of non-proportional loadings and corrosive environment on the fatigue resistance of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy, a set of uniaxial and multiaxial low cycle fatigue tests were carried out. Firstly, the results of uniaxial tests showed that the alloy exhibited cyclic hardening then cyclic softening. With the increase of stress amplitude the cyclic softening became pronounced. The increasing of plastic deformation was basically cyclically stable with small plastic strain amplitude accumulation when the stress amplitude was lower than 200MPa ,while it was increasing rapidly when the stress amplitude was higher than 220MPa. Secondly, it was observed that non-proportional cycle additional hardening of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy was little. While the fatigue life was badly affected by the loading paths. Thirdly ,the fatigue corrosion interactions were also talked about in details by performing the tests under the same loading conditions with corrosive environment. The experiment proved that the seawater corrosion has huge impact on fatigue life under pH 3. Finally, a multi-axial fatigue life prediction model was used to predict the fatigue life with or without the corrosive environment which showed a good agreement with experimental data.

Abstract Low cycle fatigue (LCF) tests of type 316 stainless steel (SS) were conducted in simulated pressurized water reactor (PWR) environments to evaluate the effect of zinc (Zn) content and peak strain holding. The LCF lives of 316 SS increased about 2 to 3 times in PWR environments with Zn addition and peak strain holding (Zn-PWRhold condition). Their combined effect was investigated by using cyclic hardening behavior, dislocation structure analysis, and oxide layer observation. The cyclic behavior in Zn-PWRhold condition showed general primary hardening behavior but quite longer softening behavior than other test conditions. Also, the dislocation density was decreased with Zn addition and increased again with peak strain holding. The Zn penetrates into the oxide layer at the crack tip and modifies the oxide characteristics, which results in improvement of corrosion resistance.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the effect of the aging at 200°C on creep and hardening behavior of hardenable 6101 aluminum alloy manufactured by an industrial wiredrawing process used for construction of self-supporting overhead aerial power line conductors. Design/methodology/approach The creep tests were carried out under applied constant stress 100 MPa and constant temperature 150°C. Hardness measurements were also used to investigate the mechanical behavior of the aged alloy. Micrographs of the fractured wires by creep tests were performed by scanning electron microscope. Electrical resistivity of the aged alloy was measured at different time of the aging treatment. Findings The authors have found the relationship between the precipitation sequence, the mechanical properties and the electrical resistivity of aged 6101 aluminum alloy. Originality/value The optimum properties were also deduced.
