Abstract This study was carried out in two stages. In the first step, a numerical study was performed to verify the previous experimental study. In accordance with the previous experimental study data, single lap joints models were created using the ANSYS finite element analysis program. Then, nonlinear stress and failure analyses were performed by applying the failure loads obtained in the experimental study. The maximum stress theory was used to find finite element failure loads of the single lap joints models. As a result of the finite element analysis, an approximate 80 % agreement was found between experimental and numerical results. In the second step of the study, in order to increase the bond strength, different overlap end geometry models were produced and peel and shear stresses in the adhesive layer were compared according to the reference model. As a result of the analyses, significant strength increases were calculated according to the reference model. The strength increase in model 3 and model 5 was found to be 80 % and 67 %, respectively, relative to the reference model.

Using domestic MFSP membrane as a medium of energy conversion, a kind of MFSP actuator was designed. The dedicated test equipment was constructed for experimental research, and the experimental results were given. The strip and circular MSFP membrane were analyzed qualitatively to obtain the deformation characteristics of membrane by finite element analysis software.

In view of the forming accuracy of the 3D printer, the paper, from the structure of the printer itself, discussed the influence on the precision of the printer via improving the structure of 3D printer. A typical 3D printer, such as a common type of FDM, was selected, and SOLIDWORKS software was used for solid modeling, after establishing the model, the finite element analysis was carried out on the whole structure model to obtain the deformation characteristics and the main vibration model of the printer. On the basis of finite element analysis, the influence of the level shaft bearing diameter, material properties and symmetry of the parts on the overall mechanical properties of the printer was discussed respectively. On this basis, the overall structure of the machine has been optimized and achieved remarkable results.

Constrained groove pressing (CGP) is an attractive severe plastic deformation technique capable of processing ultrafine grained/nanostructured sheet materials. The deformation behavior of pure aluminum during constrained groove pressing is investigated by carrying out a two-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA). FEA predicted deformation behavior observed during each stages of pressing indicated almost negligible deformation in flat regions, whereas the inclined shear regions revealed diverse deformation characteristics. The plastic strain distributions unveiled inhomogeneous strain distribution at the end of one pass. Detailed examination of plastic strain evolution during CGP along various sections divulged superior strain distribution along middle surfaces when compared to top and bottom surfaces. The degree of strain homogeneity is evaluated quantitatively along different regions of the sheet and is correlated to the deformation characteristics. Load–stroke characteristics obtained during corrugating and flattening of sheets exhibited three stages and two stages behavior, respectively. The results obtained from the analysis are experimentally validated by processing pure aluminum sheets by CGP and the measured deformation homogeneity is benchmarked with FEA results.
