A 3D computational fluid dynamics method is used in the current study to investigate the hybrid nanofluid (HNF) flow and heat transfer in an annulus with hot and cold rods. The chief goal of the current study is to examine the influences of dissimilar Reynolds numbers, emissivity coefficients, and dissimilar volume fractions of nanoparticles on hydraulic and thermal characteristics of the studied annulus. In this way, the geometry is modeled using a symmetry scheme. The heat transfer fluid is a water, ethylene–glycol, or water/ethylene–glycol mixture-based Cu-Al2O3 HNF, which is a Newtonian NF. According to the findings for the model at Re = 3000 and ϕ1 = 0.05, all studied cases with different base fluids have similar behavior. ϕ1 and ϕ2 are the volume concentration of Al2O3 and Cu nanoparticles, respectively. For all studied cases, the total average Nusselt number (Nuave) reduces firstly by an increment of the volume concentrations of Cu nanoparticles until ϕ2 = 0.01 or 0.02 and then, the total Nuave rises by an increment of the volume concentrations of Cu nanoparticles. Additionally, for the case with water as the base fluid, the total Nuave at ϕ2 = 0.05 is higher than the values at ϕ2 = 0.00. On the other hand, for the other cases, the total Nuave at ϕ2 = 0.05 is lower than the values at ϕ2 = 0.00. For all studied cases, the case with water as the base fluid has the maximum Nuave. Plus, for the model at Re = 4000 and ϕ1 = 0.05, all studied cases with different base fluids have similar behavior. For all studied cases, the total Nuave reduces firstly by an increment of the volume concentrations of Cu nanoparticles until ϕ2 = 0.01 and then, the total Nuave rises by an increment of the volume concentrations of Cu nanoparticles. The Nuave augments are found by an increment of Reynolds numbers. Higher emissivity values should lead to higher radiation heat transfer, but the portion of radiative heat transfer in the studied annulus is low and therefore, has no observable increment in HNF flow and heat transfer.

Flow and heat transfer analysis in ventilated cavities is one of the most widely studied problems in thermo-fluids area. Two-dimensional mixed convection in a ventilated rectangular cavity with baffles is studied numerically and the fluid considered in this study is hot air (Pr = 0.71). The horizontal walls are maintained at a constant temperature, higher than that imposed on the vertical ones. Two very thin heat-conducting baffles are inserted inside the enclosure, on its horizontal walls, to control the flow of convective fluid. The governing equations are discretized using the finite volume method and the SIMPLER algorithm to treat the coupling velocity–pressure. Line by line method is used to solve iteratively the algebraic equations. The effect of the Richardson number Ri (0.01- 100) and the location of the baffles within the cavity on the isothermal lines, streamlines distributions and the average Nusselt number (Nu) has been investigated. The result shows that the location opposite the baffles, close to the fluid outlet, is the optimal choice to be considered for industrial applications.

This paper presents the numerical investigations of the flow and heat transfer of two configurations of a transonic turbine guide vane. The basic configuration is a vane with convection cooling. The second configuration is additionally coated with a thermal barrier consisting of ZrO2. The results are obtained with a conjugate heat transfer and flow computer code that has been developed at the Institute of Steam and Gas Turbines. Measurement data is available for the basic configuration and the computational results are compared to the experimental results. The results show very good agreement between calculated and measured vane surface temperatures. The trailing edge turns out to be subjected to high thermal loads as it is too thin to be cooled effectively. Secondary flow phenomena like the passage vortex and the corner vortex and their impact on the temperature distribution are discussed. The ZrO2 coating is calculated for a thickness of 300μm. The substrate material temperatures are lowered by about 20 K–29 K in the stagnation point area and by about 27 K–43 K in the shock area on the suction side. At the trailing edge, the coating on the suction side and on the pressure side hardly influences the metal temperature.

In this study, a fully three-dimensional calculation method has been further developed to simulate and analyze various processes in a thick anode duct. The composite duct consists of a porous layer, the flow duct and solid current connector. The analysis takes the electrochemical reactions into account. Momentum and heat transport together with gas species equations have been solved by coupled source terms and variable thermo-physical properties (such as density, viscosity, specific heat, etc.) of the fuel gases mixture. The unique fuel cell conditions such as the combined thermal boundary conditions on solid walls, mass transfer (generation and consumption) associated with the electrochemical reaction and gas permeation to / from the porous electrode are applied in the analysis. Results from this study are presented for various governing parameters in order to identify the important factors on the fuel cell performance. It is found that gas species convection has a significant contribution to the gas species transport from / to the active reaction site; consequently characteristics of both gas flow and heat transfer vary widely due to big permeation to the porous layer in the entrance region and species mass concentration related diffusion after a certain distance downstream the inlet.

Abstract With the recent advances in micro devices, an accurate gas flow and heat transfer analysis become more relevant considering the slip effect. A micro-scale, multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann method with double distribution function approach is used to simulate flow and heat transfer through circular- and diamond-shaped cylinders at the porescale level. The velocity slip and temperature jump are captured at the boundaries using a non-equilibrium extrapolation scheme with the counter-extrapolation method. A pore-scale domain of micro-cylinders comprised of circle and diamond shape are studied. It is found that the permeability increases linearly with an increase in Knudsen number for both circular- and diamond-shaped cylinders. However, the permeability increase for circular obstacle is larger than that of the diamond one. A larger surface area for diamond cylinder will offer more resistance to flow, hence resulting in lower values. For heat transfer, the Nusselt number shows an increase with increasing Reynolds number, however, it decreases with the increase in porosity. Nusselt number values are found to be higher for a circular obstacle. A variable boundary gradient for circular obstacle could be a possible explanation for this difference.
