Crystalline multiferroic BiFeO3 powders were directly synthesized by sol-gel auto-combustion method. The gels, derived from the solutions of 2-methoxyethane, metal nitrate and citric acid, exhibited the self-propagating combustion behaviors at ambient temperature when it is ignited in air. After auto-combustion, the dried gels transformed into crystalline BiFeO3 powders and no further calcination was needed. The nature of auto-combustion was ascribed to heat-induced redox between NH4NO3 and carboxyl group. The TG-DTA was carried out to study the auto-combustion of dried gels. The synthesized powders were characterized by XRD and SEM techniques.

Bioactive glass of the type CaO–SrO–P2O5–SiO2was obtained by the sol-gel processing method. Three samples containing 0 mol%, 5 mol% and 10 mol% of SrO were synthesized. The obtained bioactive glasses were characterized by the techniques such as, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the effect of SrO/CaO substitution on in vitro biological properties of the synthesized glasses were evaluated and biocompatibility of the samples was measured using MTT assay. The results showed that incorporation of Sr in the obtained glass network did not result in any structural alteration of it due to the similar role of SrO compared with that of CaO. In vitro experiments with human osteosarcoma cell lines (MG-63) and MTT assay indicated that bioactive glass incorporating 5 mol% of Sr in the composition is non-toxic and revealed good biocompatibility.

AbstractOne of the major routes to synthesize macroporous α-Al2O3 is the sol-gel process in presence of templates. Templates include polymers as well as carboxylic acids, such as citric acid. By careful choice of the template, pore diameters can be adjusted between 110 nm and several µm. We report the successful establishment of plain short-chain dicarboxylic acids (DCA) as porogenes in the sol-gel synthesis of macroporous α-Al2O3. By this extension of the recently developed synthesis route, a very precise control of pore diameters is achieved, in addition to enhanced macropore volumes in α-Al2O3. The formation mechanism thereof is closely related to the one postulated for citric acid, as thermal analyses show. However, since branching in the DCA-linked alumina nuclei is not possible, close monomodal pore width distributions are attained, which are accompanied by enhanced pore volumes. This is a significant improvement in terms of controlled enhanced porosity in the synthesis of macroporous α-Al2O3.
