The Messinian stromatolites belonging to the Terminal Carbonate Complex unit, from the northern sector of the Bajo Segura Basin (CAM section, Sierra del Colmenar, SE Spain) have been studied. To understand the direct relationship between the morphologies of the stromatolites and their deposition context in order to reconstruct the environmental conditions for their growth, a detailed study of their architecture, external morphology and internal morphology was carried out (macrofabric and microfabric). The stromatolites are made up of domic bodies laterally linked to each other, generating a macrostructure (bioherms) with lateral continuity. This stromatolitic macrostructure presents variations in its internal morphology, giving rise to seven subfacies product of the environmental changes experienced during the growth of the microbial bushes. The stromatolites are arranged parallel of coastline acting as paleogeographic barriers to reduce the physical stress of the environment. Although in general lines suggests a coastal environment, restricted and shallow for the formation of the whole level, the variation in internal morphology is evidence of minor changes in the physical environment.

AbstractThe Bølling–Allerød interstadial is the closest warm time period to the Holocene. The study of the climate variability during this most recent warm scenario provides a natural record of potential environmental changes related with global temperature variations. Little is known about this interstadial in the Southern Iberian Peninsula. Therefore, the exceptional climatic record of the Otiñar paleo-lake (ca. 14.5–14.0 cal ka BP), provides environmental information about the first part of this interstadial (Bølling) in this key region. Although the studied high-resolution isotopic record point to almost invariant hydrological conditions in the paleo-lake, with little change in the carbon budget and important limestone dissolution, the pollen record shows an increase in forest species that can be interpreted as a warming trend and an increase in humidity during the Bølling in the area. This record is one of the few continental archives that show this climatic trend in Southern Iberia, agreeing with many other regional records from the western Mediterranean. This does not agree with higher latitude records that show an opposite trend. This opposite pattern in precipitation between the western Mediterranean and more northern latitudes could be explained by a persistent and increasing negative NAO mode during the Bølling in this area.

<p>In this study, we synthesized pollen data from seven sites from the Sierra Nevada in southern Spain to investigate the response of forests in the western Mediterranean area to centennial- and millennial-scale climate changes and to human impact during the Holocene. In particular, here we focused in <em>Cedrus</em> pollen abundances, which most-likely originated from Northern Africa and were carried to Sierra Nevada by wind. Although <em>Cedrus</em> abundances are generally lower than 1% in the studied pollen samples, a comparison with North African pollen records shows similar trends at long- and short-term time-scales. Therefore, this record could be used as a proxy for changes in this forest species in North Africa. A Middle and Late Holocene <em>Cedrus</em> pollen increasing trend has been observed in the Sierra Nevada synthetic record, which seems to be the result of decreasing summer insolation. This would have produced overall cooler annual temperatures in Northern Africa (Atlas and Rif Mountains), benefiting the growth of this cool-adapted montane tree species, and lower summer evaporation, increasing available moisture during the summer, which is critical for this water-demanding species. Millennial- and centennial-scale variability also characterize the Sierra Nevada <em>Cedrus</em> synthetic record. <em>Cedrus</em> abundance oscillations could have been produced by well-known millennial-scale climatic variability that controlled cedar abundance in montane areas of N Africa.  </p>

A representative outcrop of the Messinian stromatolites belonging to the Terminal Carbonate Complex unit, from the northern sector of the Bajo Segura basin (Caja de Ahorros del Mediterraneosection, Sierra del Colmenar, SE Spain) has been studied. Here, we present a detailed analysis of the architecture, external morphology, and internal morphology in order to reconstruct the environmental and palaeoecological conditions for their growth. The stromatolites macrostructure consists of a continuously doming type morphology (build up and sheets areas). These developed close to the coast and acted as a palaeogeographic barrier, reducing physical stress, channeling the erosive effect of water and favoring restricted conditions. This stromatolitic macrostructure exhibits variations in its internal morphology, giving rise to seven subfacies, which are a product of the environmental changes experienced during the growth of the microbial mats. Although broadly suggesting a coastal environment, restricted and shallow during formation, the variation in internal morphology (mesostructure and microstructure) is evidence of minor changes in the physical environment that indicate a progressive shallowing.

AbstractRelationships between environmental factors and oscillations in jellyfish abundance, especially in the early life stages, could help to interpret past increases and also predict scenarios in a changing future. For the first time, we present cubozoan spatial and temporal distributions in the earliest stages and their relationships with different factors. Abundances of Carybdea marsupialis medusae showed high interannual variability from 2008 to 2014 along the Dénia coast (SE Spain, W Mediterranean). During 2015, samples were collected from 11 beaches along 17 km of coastline, 8 times from January to November in order to determine the effects of environmental factors on the distribution of juvenile C. marsupialis. Juveniles (≤ 15 mm diagonal bell width) were present from May to July, with more sampled near shore (0 – 15 m). Most of them occurred in June when their numbers were unequal among beaches (average 0.05 ind m−3, maximum 6.71 ind m−3). We tested distributions of juveniles over time and space versus temperature, salinity, nutrients (N, P and Si), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), and zooplankton abundance. Temperature and cladocerans (zooplankton group) were significantly positively correlated with juvenile distribution, whereas Chl-a concentration was weakly negative. By contrast, in 2014, high productivity areas (Chl-a and zooplankton) overlapped the maximum adult abundance (5.2 ind m−3). The distribution of juveniles during 2015 did not spatially coincide with the areas where ripe adults were located the previous year, suggesting that juveniles drift with the currents upon release from the cubopolyps. Our results yield important insights into the complexity of cubozoan distributions.
