Background: This study aimed to know the prevalence of abnormal cervical cytology in pregnant women by liquid-based cytology (LBC). Materials and Methods : Cross sectional study done at a tertiary care hospital in between August 2017 to January 2019.Six hundred pregnant women attending the OPD at their rst visit were enrolled and after taking consent, history and clinical examination , subjected to cervical cancer screening by LBC. Result: Out of 600 samples, 10 samples (1.67%) were unsatisfactory for evaluation due to low cellularity. Among 590 samples, only 2 reported as LSIL(Low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion) and 588 reported as NILM (Negative for intraepithelial lesion or malignancy). Inammation of varying degree, mild, moderate and dense was reported in 58.65%, 24.92% and 16.44% respectively. Infection was reported in 3.73% and Candida. Discussion: prevalence of abnormal cervical cytology among pregnant women in region was low but screening for cancer cervix should be done for all pregnant women, adverse pregnancy outcomes like premature rupture of membranes, preterm birth and low birth weight.

AbstractObjectivesExposure to inorganic arsenic (iAs) is a world-wide health concern. We reported that Japanese children and pregnant women are exposed to moderate levels of iAs through food. Reducing iAs contamination from foods of high iAs is an important issue unique in Japan. Integrated iAs is methylated to less toxic organic forms, and S-adenosyl-L-methyonine (SAM), a common methyl-donor of DNA and histones, is utilized in this process. Chronic consumption of SAM by iAs metabolism due to exposure to iAs might alter the epigenetic modification of genome. The SAM biosynthesis pathway is dependent on folate cycle, and it is possible that ingestion of sufficient folic acid (FA) is protective to iAs induced toxicity.MethodsIn the course of our cross-sectional body burden analyses of Pb and iAs in Japanese children and pregnant women, termed “PbAs study”, FA concentration in serum of 104 pregnant women was measured.ResultsMean (±SEM) of serum FA concentration was 15.8 ± 1.3 (ng/mL). There are significant number of people showing very high FA (>30 ng/ mL), and large fraction of them were taking supplements daily.ConclusionsThese results suggested that level of FA ingestion of Japanese pregnant women is high for supporting normal fetal development.

Colposcopic assessment may be normal in the presence of severe or persistent minor cytologic abnormality. To assess the significance of negative satisfactory colposcopy in patients with abnormal cervical smears, a retrospective review was carried out on 1170 patients who had undergone out-patient loop diathermy excision for abnormal cervical cytology. Of these, 69 patients were treated for abnormal cervical cytology, despite normal colposcopic findings. Cytologic abnormalities ranged from persistent borderline changes to severe dyskariosis. Histologic assessment of the excision specimens revealed cervical intraepithalial neoplasia (CIN) in 43 (62.3%) cases, of which high-grade CIN accounted for 24 (34.8%) cases. There was good correlation between cytologic and histologic diagnosis. Simple regression analysis showedr= 0.46,P< 0.0001. The cytologic abnormality was highly predictive of the corresponding histologic diagnosis. This analysis has shown that significant intraepithelial lesions may exist despite negative colposcopic examination and highlights the need for histologic evaluation in such cases. In these circumstances, loop cone biopsy permits accurate definition of lesion severity, avoids potential undertreatment of significant lesions and causes less morbidity than conventional cone biopsy.
