Abstract Fisheries and marine ecosystem-based management requires a holistic understanding of the dynamics of fish communities and their responses to changes in environmental conditions. Environmental conditions can simultaneously shape the spatial distribution and the temporal dynamics of a population, which together can trigger changes in the functional structure of communities. Here, we developed a comprehensive framework based on complementary multivariate statistical methodologies to simultaneously investigate the effects of environmental conditions on the spatial, temporal and functional dynamics of species assemblages. The framework is tested using survey data collected during more than 4000 fisheries hauls over the Baltic Sea between 2001 and 2016. The approach revealed the Baltic fish community to be structured into three sub-assemblages along a strong and temporally stable salinity gradient decreasing from West to the East. Additionally, we highlight a mismatch between species and functional richness associated with a lower functional redundancy in the Baltic Proper compared with other sub-areas, suggesting an ecosystem more susceptible to external pressures. Based on a large dataset of community data analysed in an innovative and comprehensive way, we could disentangle the effects of environmental changes on the structure of biotic communities—key information for the management and conservation of ecosystems.

I draw on fieldwork based in the Word of Life Ministry, Sweden, to consider how these neo-Pentecostals have constructed the Baltic as a landscape of both action and imagination. One part of my argument states that we must see the ministry’s attitudes to Sweden and the wider Baltic region in terms of its desire to situate itself within Swedish revivalist history. I also argue, however, that we can fruitfully draw on Bakhtin’s notion of the ‘chronotope’ to trace how the Baltic constitutes a potent spatio-temporal context for the construction of a narrative which encourages Word of Life members to see their missionary role as being contained within, but also looking far beyond, the Baltic Sea region.

Abstract. Free sea level oscillations in barotropic and baroclinic conditions were examined using numerical experiments based on a 3D hydrodynamic model of the Baltic Sea. In a barotropic environment, the highest amplitudes of free sea level oscillations are observed in the northern Gulf of Bothnia, eastern Gulf of Finland, and south-western Baltic Sea. In these areas, the maximum variance appears within the frequency range corresponding to periods of 13–44 hr. In a stratified environment, after the cessation of meteorological forcing, water masses relax to the equilibrium state in the form of mesoscale oscillations at the same frequencies as well as in the form of rapidly decaying low-frequency (seasonal) oscillations. The total amplitudes of free baroclinic perturbations are significantly larger than those of barotropic perturbations, reaching 15–17 cm. Contrary to barotropic, oscillations in baroclinic conditions are strongly pronounced in the deep-water areas of the Baltic Sea Proper. Specific spatial patterns of amplitudes and phases of free barotropic and baroclinic sea level oscillations identified them as progressive-standing waves representing barotropic or baroclinic modes of gravity waves and topographic Rossby waves.

Statistical data on reserves, production and exports of Russian oil are provided in the article. The author pays special attention to the expansion of opportunities of sea oil transportation by construction of new oil terminals in the North-West of the country and first of all the largest terminal in Murmansk. In his opinion, one of the main problems in this sphere is prevention of ecological accidents in the process of oil transportation through the Baltic sea ports.
