In a study of 10 lakes in the Eastern Townships (Quebec) periphyton biomass correlated less well with total P (TP) concentration in the water than did phytoplankton biomass. The relationship with TP was improved somewhat when periphyton biomass was estimated as cell volume rather than as chlorophyll or organic material. When the community was divided among various groups according to taxa, life form, and size, only the biomasses of greens, filamentous algae, and algae exceeding 10 000 μm3 were correlated with TP. The biomass of the smaller algae, which are more readily grazed by benthos, was about the same in all lakes whereas nuisance forms increased significantly with P enrichment. At more eutrophic sites, maximal periphyton biomasses were observed in midsummer, coinciding with peak recreational use of lakes, whereas at the other sites, maxima appeared earlier in the season.

This essay examines the convergence of conceptualist poetics with evolutionary code as a form of ‘becoming alien’. The focus is Christian Bök's The Xenotext project: an attempt at translating a ‘short verse about language and genetics’, using a chemical alphabet, into a DNA sequence implanted into the genome of a polyextremophile bacterium capable of enduring conditions in outerspace. Bök describes the project as, ‘in effect, engineering a life-form so that it becomes not only a durable archive for storing a poem, but also as an operant machine for writing a poem – one that can persist on the planet until the sun itself explodes …’. The concrete, constraint-based character of Bök's project evokes a mode of writing between posthumanist aesthetics and a positivist grammatology by turns deconstructive and itself requiring of deconstruction.

A new species of the genus Cimmerites Jeannel, 1928, C. maximovitchi sp. nov., is described from the Akhunskaya Cave and Labirintovaya Cave, both located in the Akhun Karst Massif on the Black Sea Coast of the West Caucasus (Krasnodar Territory, Russia). The new species is rather isolated within the genus Cimmerites and occupies an intermediate position between species related to C. kryzhanovskii Belousov, 1998 and species close to C. vagabundus Belousov, 1998. Though both C. maximovitchi sp. nov. and C. kryzhanovskii are still known only from caves, these species are quite similar in their life form to other members of the genus which are all true endogean species.

Ecological study of tropical semi-evergreen forest of Reiek in Mizoram was carried out to determine the stratification of the forest as well as to prepare life form spectrum of the plant communities. Mizoram is a part of Indo- Myanmar region which falls under one of the 35 biodiversity hotspots identified worldwide and therefore has a rich biodiversity. A detailed floristic survey was carried out. Plant species were collected, mounted in herbarium sheets and identified. Structural analysis was carried out and profile diagram was drawn. The forest was found to be composed of three layers in both the disturbed and undisturbed areas of the forest. The life form spectrum has been compared with Raunkiers normal spectrum to find out the phytoclimate of the region. The study area was found to have an abundance of phanerophytes indicating a phanerophytic climate

In total, 149 species of macrophytes (angiosperms 138, pteridophytes 7, bryophytes 2, algae 2) were recorded among which 117 species were emergent, 12 floating-leafed, 14 submerged and 6 free-floating on the basis of life form. In general, 68% species had flowering-fruiting during the rainy season, 17% in winter and 15% in the summer season. Many of the plant species were observed to play important role in meeting day to day requirements of the rural people.
