Warm asphalt rubber (WAR) mixture is a sustainable paving material with advantages including waste recycling and noise reducing. A comprehensive understanding of the fatigue performance of WAR specimens is helpful to its wide application. However, research on evaluating the fatigue performance of WAR binder and mixtures is very limited. This paper applies five fatigue analysis approaches to evaluate the fatigue life of WAR samples with three different warm mix asphalt (WMA) additives. The conventional G*sinδ, linear amplitude sweep (LAS), indirect tensile fatigue test (ITFT), and four-point bending beam (4PB) test were conducted based on available standards. In addition, a novel shear fatigue test was performed on WAR mortars. Test results indicated that the incorporation of crumb rubber has a significantly positive effect on fatigue resistance. WAR with chemical and foaming additives exhibited a poorer performance than asphalt rubber (AR), but their fatigue performance was still greatly superior to the non-rubberized samples. Finally, LAS as well as mortar shear fatigue and 4PB tests provided the same prediction of fatigue resistance, while the results of G*sinδ and the ITFT were inconsistent. It is recommended to use LAS, the mortar shear fatigue test, and the 4PB test for the fatigue resistance evaluation of rubberized specimens. The validation of the findings with more materials and field performances is recommended.

Crack initiation and propagation process of fatigue test in semi-circular notched plates at elevated temperature were observed by the CCD video camera. Test specimens are made of SUS304 stainless steel, and temperature is kept to be 550°C, and geometry of semi-circular notched plate specimens are changed by diameter size of the circular hole. Photographs in all cycles were recorded to investigate crack initiation process in structural components having stress concentration and obtain number of cycle of crack initiation (Nc). The test results were compared with predictions by Stress Redistribution Locus (SRL) method and Neuber’s rule’s method.

A tension-compression cycle fatigue test was performed in order to study the fatigue property of C50 concrete with pre-cracks in cyclic loading. The stress ratio was-1 and the amplitude was 0.2 MPa ~1.30 MPa. The results show that the modified coefficient of fatigue strength is 0.198~0.265 and the infinite life fatigue strength is below 0.45MPa. While the log value of fatigue life is approximately linear with the amplitude of fatigue load stress, the discreteness of fatigue life, the particularity of concrete, has little to do with the amplitude. The S-N, P-N fatigue life curves and the constant fatigue life diagram of pre-crack concrete are obtained.

With more than 50.000 tons in service to date, the Oil&Gas Industry has the need to understand the tension fatigue performance of grade R5 chains in straight tension, and corroborate the validity of the existing design methods. The chain fatigue design curves in API and DNV are based on fatigue tests obtained in the nineties and early two thousands. However the tests were performed on lower grades such as ORQ, R3 and R4, and small chains, 76 mm diameter being the largest studless chain tested. The industry has moved towards the use of large studless chains, especially in permanent units, where chain diameters above 150 mm are not unusual. This paper gathers information from a full scale fatigue test program on grade R4 and R5 studless chains, performed in seawater and with diameters between 70 mm and 171 mm. The chains being tested are actual production chains supplied for different drilling units and large permanently moored production floating units. The paper analyses the data and determines tension-tension fatigue curves based on API and DNV methods for computation of cumulative fatigue damage, regardless of other damaging mechanisms. Improved fatigue capacity is obtained with respect to the above recommended design methods.

The offshore environment contains many sources of cyclic loading. Standard design S-N curves, such as those in DNVGL-RP-C203, are usually assigned to ensure a particular design life can be achieved for a particular set of anticipated loading conditions. Girth welds are often the ‘weak link’ in terms of fatigue strength and so it is important to show that girth welds made using new procedures for new projects that are intended to be used in fatigue sensitive risers or flowlines do indeed have the required fatigue performance. Alternatively, designers of new subsea connectors, used for example in tendons for tension leg platforms, mooring applications or well-heads which will experience cyclic loading in service, also wish to verify the fatigue performance of their new designs. Often operators require contractors to carry out resonance fatigue tests on representative girth welds in order to show that girth welds made using new procedures qualify to the required design S-N curve. Operators and contractors must then interpret the results, which is not necessarily straightforward if the fatigue lives are lower than expected. Many factors influence a component’s fatigue strength so there is usually scatter in results obtained when a number of fatigue tests are carried out on real, production standard components. This scatter means that it is important first to carry out the right number of tests in order to obtain a reasonable understanding of the component’s fatigue strength, and then to interpret the fatigue test results properly. A working knowledge of statistics is necessary for both specifying the test programme and interpreting the test results and there is often confusion over various aspects of test specification and interpretation. This paper describes relevant statistical concepts in a way that is accessible to non-experts and that can be used, practically, by designers. The paper illustrates the statistical analysis of test data with examples of the ‘target life’ approach (that is now included in BS7608:2014 + A1) and the equivalent approach in DNVGL-RP-C203, which uses the stress modification factor. It gives practical examples to designers of a pragmatic method that can be used when specifying test programmes and interpreting the results obtained from tests carried out during qualification programmes, which for example, aim to determine whether girth welds made using a new procedure qualify to a particular design curve. It will help designers who are tasked with specifying test programmes to choose a reasonable number of test specimens and stress ranges, and to understand the outcome when results have been obtained.

Abstract At the Fall Meeting of the Division in Chicago, the results of a program to develop a new method for evaluating tire belt cords and belt fabric in dynamic axial fatigue were presented. This paper describes the correlation of that test with tires built and tested in wheel and track tests designed, as was the dynamic fatigue test, to fail cords at an accelerated rate. We are encouraged by the correlation which we have observed between the ranking of cords in the laboratory evaluation and the performance rating of tires built with these cords as the belt reinforcement.
