Eight-membered rings of the composition [SO2(NR)2PR′]2 3a-d with R = CH3, C2H5, and R′ = CH3, C6H5, were prepared from substituted sulfamides and dichlorophosphanes in the presence of a tertiary amine. These molecules were characterized on the basis of 1H and 31P NMR investigations and of mass spectra. 3 a reacts with phosphorus pentachloride to yield the spirocyclic derivative 4 with the phosphorus atom in the center of two four-membered rings. Methyliodide reacts with 3 a and 3 b under opening of the eight- membered ring and formation of phosphonium salts. The structure of 3 b is discussed in detail. 8b crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pna 21 with a = 12.60(0), b = 13.27(1), c = 12.62(4) Å.

Abstract The spectral-luminescent properties of europium(III) complexes with p -methylbenzoic acid and nitrogen- and phosphorus-containing neutral ligands of compositions [Eu( p -MBA)_3 · D]_2 · x H_2O and [Eu( p ‑MBA)_3 · 2H_2O]_ n , where p -MBA is the anion of p -methylbenzoic acid and D is 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 2,2' dipyridyl (dipy), triphenylphosphine oxide (tppo) ( х = 0), hexamethylphosphortriamide (hmpa) ( x = 1), or benzotriazole (bt) ( x = 2) are studied. The electronic absorption spectra, the luminescence excitation spectra, and the Stark structure of ^5 D _0−^7 F _ j (  j = 0–2) electronic transitions in low-temperature luminescence spectra of complex europium(III) p -methylbenzoates are analyzed. It is found that the excitation energy transfer to europium ions occurs from the levels of both p -methylbenzoic acid and neutral ligands.

Abstract A joint U.S. Environmental Protection Agency/AOAC interlaboratory method validation study was conducted on EPA Method 507, Determination of Nitrogen- and Phosphorus- Containing Pesticides In Finished Drinking Water by Gas Chromatography with a Nitrogen-Phosphorus Detector, to determine the mean recovery and precision for analyses of 45 nitrogen- or phosphorus-containing pesticides in reagent water and finished drinking waters. The study design was based on Youden's nonreplicate plan for collaborative tests of analytical methods. The waters were spiked with 45 nitrogen- or phosphorus-containing pesticides at 6 concentration levels, prepared as 3 Youden pairs. Ten volunteer laboratories extracted the spiked test waters with methylene chloride, performed a solvent exchange with methyl ferf-butyl ether, and analyzed an aliquot of each extract by gas chromatography using a nitrogen-phosphorus detector. Results were analyzed using an EPA computer program, which measured recovery and precision for each of the 45 pesticides and compared the performance of the method between water types. Method 507 was judged acceptable for all analytes tested except merphos, which thermally decomposed in the Injection port of the gas chromatograph. Five compounds (carboxin, disulfoton, metolachlor, pronamlde, and slmazlne) exhibited statistically significant matrix effects for the finished drinking water. The method has been adopted official first action by AOAC.
