We re-study the seven neutrino mass matrices with two independent vanishing entries under the latest results of neutrino oscillation experiments after the neutrino - 2012 conference. It is shown that the pattern B 1 could be excluded since this pattern realizes very small value of mixing angle theta13. The remain six textures satisfy the current experimental data. We also find that all seven textures of neutrino mass matrix possess the normal hierarchy of neutrino mass spectrum.

We suggest a simple model, based on the type-I seesaw mechanism, for the lepton mass matrices. The model hinges on an Abelian symmetry which leads to mass matrices with some vanishing matrix elements. The model predicts one massless neutrino and Meμ = 0 (M is the effective light-neutrino Majorana mass matrix). We show that these predictions agree with the present experimental data if the neutrino mass spectrum is inverted, i.e. if m3 = 0, provided the Dirac phase δ is very close to maximal (±π/ 2). In the case of a normal neutrino mass spectrum, i.e. when m1 = 0, the agreement of our model with the data is imperfect — the reactor mixing angle θ13 is too small in our model. Minimal leptogenesis is not an option in our model due to the vanishing elements in the Yukawa-coupling matrices.

In the basis where the charged lepton mass matrix is diagonal, the left-handed neutrino mass matrix is invariant under the permutation of the second and third generations if, and only if, the reactor angle θ13 is zero and the atmospheric mixing angle θ23 is maximal. In the presence of the seesaw mechanism, this symmetry leads to an inverted hierarchy, with m3 = 0. This inverted mass spectrum is doubly protected if the right-handed neutrinos also have a 2–3 symmetry.PACS No.: 14.60Pq

The fact that neutrinos are massive has been the most crucial evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles. To date, we still do not know how neutrinos get mass and why their mass is much smaller than that of their charged fermion cousins. The precise determination of the neutrino mass spectrum has become one of the central tasks of neutrino physics, providing critical input for understanding the nature of neutrino mass and extending our model. The present landscape of the neutrino mass spectrum is reviewed and explored in this article using data from the neutrino oscillation, cosmology, and beta decay. In addition, we discuss the possibility of relevant programs elucidating the neutrino mass spectrum in the coming decades.

Abstract A new scheme to determine the neutrino mass matrix is proposed using atomic de-excitation between two states of a few eV energy spacing. The determination of the smallest neutrino mass of the order of 1 meV and neutrino mass type, Majorana or Dirac, becomes possible, if one can coherently excite more than 1 gram of atoms using two lasers.

We present a detailed analysis and phenomenological consequences of neutrino mass matrix, [Formula: see text], with one-zero texture in the flavor basis where the active neutrino sector is extended by one sterile neutrino (3[Formula: see text]+[Formula: see text]1 case). In particular, our aim is to explore behavior of the sterile mixing parameters in detail when one of the elements of the neutrino mass matrix goes to zero. To study this, we consider two distinct mass spectrum of the active neutrinos: (i) completely hierarchical mass spectrum with a vanishing neutrino mass and (ii) completely quasidegenerate mass spectrum. In 3[Formula: see text]+[Formula: see text]1 scenario, the low energy neutrino mass matrix, [Formula: see text], is a [Formula: see text] matrix and has 10 independent elements. Thus it can have 10 possible one-zero textures. From the earlier studies it can be inferred that, if one assumes one vanishing neutrino mass, then only seven of these [Formula: see text] are phenomenologically allowed by the current neutrino oscillation data. On the other hand, if the neutrinos are quasidegenerate then there are eight phenomenologically viable one-zero textures. In this paper, we study the correlations between the sterile mixing parameters for each of these allowed textures for both mass spectrum and also their implications on the effective Majorana mass.
