Native-like use of preterit and imperfect morphology in all contexts by English learners of L2 Spanish is the exception rather than the rule, even for successful learners. Nevertheless, recent research has demonstrated that advanced English learners of L2 Spanish attain a native-like morphosyntactic competence for the Preterit/Imperfect contrast, as evidenced by their native-like knowledge of associated semantic entailments (Goodin-Mayeda and Rothman 2007, Montrul and Slabakova 2003, Slabakova and Montrul, 2003, Rothman and Iverson 2007). In addition to an L2 disassociation of morphology and syntax (e.g., Bruhn de Garavito 2003, Lardiere 1998, 2000, 2005, Prévost and White 1999, 2000, Schwartz 2003), I hypothesize that a system of learned pedagogical rules contributes to target-deviant L2 performance in this domain through the most advanced stages of L2 acquisition via its competition with the generative system. I call this hypothesis the Competing Systems Hypothesis. To test its predictions, I compare and contrast the use of the Preterit and Imperfect in two production tasks by native, tutored (classroom), and naturalistic learners of L2 Spanish.

Abstract Linguistic iconicity has been studied since ancient times (e.g., Plato’s Cratylus, see Cooper & Hutchinson 1997). Within modern grammatical description, this notion was mostly developed by Jakobson and Benveniste; nowadays, iconicity in language is even being experimentally tested (e.g., Blasi et al. 2016; Diatka & Milička 2017). However, most studies on linguistic iconicity pertain to prosody, sound symbolism, or morphology; syntactic iconicity has been vastly underexplored. In this paper, we present two hypotheses concerning syntactic iconicity: (1) syntactic descriptions of natural language strings have an inherent structure which is isomorphic to that of representations in some other component of grammar or a non-grammatical system; or (2) linear order imposed on phrase structure is isomorphic to that in some other component of grammar or a non-grammatical system. We will argue in favour of the former, which constitutes a novel perspective on iconicity in grammar. We furthermore discuss the place that iconicity may have in the architecture of a generative system.

The article presents the results of a study on the features on the formation of generative organs of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) in mountainous areas of Tajikistan at a height of over 2700 meters above sea level. There is a difference in formation character of generative system of potato plants, depending on the genotype accessions. It was noted that the formation of flower buds on the total amount of from 5 to 95%, and the number of berries formed 1to 10 units /plant or from 7.7 to 20.6 % of the total number of flowers. Formation of berries of potato varieties in a little due to the amount of viable pollen grains per flower. The number of seeds in a berry varies from 51 to 150 units, and it is associated with the viability of the pollen grains of potato flower. One berry of potatoes in average contains about 96 pieces of seeds. It was determined that 16 % of potato accessions form less than 10 % have viable pollen grains, which is probably due to a partial cytoplasmic sterile pollen.

Parametric design and digital fabrication are becoming an ubiquitous tool to contemporary architecture and implies a different method of detailing. With this new perception of the contemporary detail we have developed a façade sun shade using fractal geometry as a generative system. Fractals are complex shapes generated with simple rules, so is relatively easy to change the final geometry when we work with parameters. The design process made possible the creation of many solutions using parametric definitions. Those solutions were physically modeled using rapid prototyping which we consider as an essential tool to the design process. This method also involved analysis and testing of the design using software and the physical models. With this project it was possible to conclude that when working with digital fabrication architects need to incorporate a new set of skills, and that collaboration between professional is extremely important.

The purpose of this chapter is to examine the psychological approach from a narrative viewpoint. In addition, the authors discuss the possibility of collaboration with artificial intelligence (AI). They reviewed the narrative approaches in psychology. At result, they showed how the narrative approach in clinical domain was expanded. The following possibilities exist regarding a narrative generative system in a narrow sense: (1) It is the construction of a fluid system. (2) The systems generate a tale communally. (3) There are no clear beginnings and endings. (4) It is a narrative generation through a dialogue. Next, the following possibilities exist regarding a narrative generative system in broad sense: (1) It is the modeling of the stance of the narrative. (2) It is the modeling of narrative generation by the community. (3) It is the modeling of the process. (4) It is the study of the interlocutory peculiarity.
