AbstractFor certain product varieties, Murre's conjecture on Chow groups is investigated. More precisely, let k be an algebraically closed field, X be a smooth projective variety over k and C be a smooth projective irreducible curve over k with function field K. Then we prove that if X (resp. XK) satisfies Murre's conjectures (A) and (B) for a set of Chow-Künneth projectors {, 0 ≤ i ≤ 2dim X} of X (resp. for {()K} of XK) and if for any j, , then the product variety X × C also satisfies Murre's conjectures (A) and (B). As consequences, it is proved that if C is a curve and X is an elliptic modular threefold over k (an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0) or an abelian variety of dimension 3, then Murre's conjecture (B) is true for the fourfold X × C.

Abstract Let {{k}} be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, and let {f:X\to Y} be a morphism of smooth projective varieties over the ring {k((t))} of formal Laurent series. We prove that if a general geometric fiber of f is rationally connected, then the induced map {f^{\mathrm{an}}:X^{\mathrm{an}}\to Y^{\mathrm{an}}} between the Berkovich analytifications of X and Y is a homotopy equivalence. Two important consequences of this result are that the Berkovich analytification of any {\mathbb{P}^{n}} -bundle over a smooth projective {k((t))} -variety is homotopy equivalent to the Berkovich analytification of the base, and that the Berkovich analytification of a rationally connected smooth projective variety over {k((t))} is contractible.

We show that the torsion in the group of indecomposable $(2,1)$-cycles on a smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed field is isomorphic to a twist of its Brauer group, away from the characteristic. In particular, this group is infinite as soon as $b_{2}-{\it\rho}>0$. We derive a new insight into Roǐtman’s theorem on torsion $0$-cycles over a surface.

We investigate the deformations of pairs [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] is a line bundle on a smooth projective variety [Formula: see text], defined over an algebraically closed field [Formula: see text] of characteristic 0. In particular, we prove that the DG-Lie algebra controlling the deformations of the pair [Formula: see text] is homotopy abelian whenever [Formula: see text] has trivial canonical bundle, and so these deformations are unobstructed.

Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0. Let K/k be a function field of one variable and L/K be an unramified separable abelian extension of degree pr over K. The galois automorphisms ε1, …, εpr of L/K are naturally extended to automorphisms η(ε1), … , η(εpr) of the jacobian variety JL of L/k. If we take a svstem of p-adic coordinates on JL, we get a representation {Mp(η(εv))} of the galois group G(L/K) of L/K over p-adic integers.

AbstractLet X be a smooth projective variety defined over an algebraically closed field k. Nori constructed a category of vector bundles on X, called essentially finite vector bundles, which is reminiscent of the category of representations of the fundamental group (in characteristic zero). In fact, this category is equivalent to the category of representations of a pro-finite group scheme which controls all finite torsors. We show that essentially finite vector bundles coincide with those which become trivial after being pulled back by some proper and surjective morphism to X.

AbstractLet X be projective variety over an algebraically closed field k and G be a finite group with g.c.d.(char(k), |G|) = 1. We prove that any representations of G on a coherent sheaf, ρ : G → End(ℰ), has a natural decomposition ℰ ≃ ⊕ V ⊗k ℱV, where G acts trivially on ℱV and the sum run over all irreducible representations of G over k.

In this paper we prove a lifting result for local cohomology. As a special case we get the following result for the Serre-cohomology over a projective variety:Proposition (1·1). Let ℱ be a coherent sheaf over X, where X is a projective variety over an algebraically closed field k. Let i ≽ 0 and assume that there is a pencil P of hyper-plane sections which is in general position with respect to ℱ (which means that x ∉ H, ∀x ∈ Ass(ℱ), ∀H∈p), and such that for each H ∈ P Hi(X, ℱ│H(n)) = 0, ∀n ≪ 0. Then Hi + 1(X, ℱ) = 0, ∀n ≪ 0.

Abstract Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$, let $N\in{\mathbb{N}}$, let $g:{\mathbb{P}}^1{\longrightarrow } {\mathbb{P}}^1$ be a nonconstant morphism, and let $A:{\mathbb{A}}^N{\longrightarrow } {\mathbb{A}}^N$ be a linear transformation defined over $k({\mathbb{P}}^1)$, that is, for a Zariski-open dense subset $U\subset{\mathbb{P}}^1$, we have that for $x\in U(k)$, the specialization $A(x)$ is an $N$-by-$N$ matrix with entries in $k$. We let $f:{\mathbb{P}}^1\times{\mathbb{A}}^N{\dashrightarrow } {\mathbb{P}}^1\times{\mathbb{A}}^N$ be the rational endomorphism given by $(x,y)\mapsto (\,g(x), A(x)y)$. We prove that if $g$ induces an automorphism of ${\mathbb{A}}^1\subset{\mathbb{P}}^1$, then each irreducible curve $C\subset{\mathbb{A}}^1\times{\mathbb{A}}^N$ that intersects some orbit $\mathcal{O}_f(z)$ in infinitely many points must be periodic under the action of $f$. Furthermore, in the case $g:{\mathbb{P}}^1{\longrightarrow } {\mathbb{P}}^1$ is an endomorphism of degree greater than $1$, then we prove that each irreducible subvariety $Y\subset{\mathbb{P}}^1\times{\mathbb{A}}^N$ intersecting an orbit $\mathcal{O}_f(z)$ in a Zariski dense set of points must be periodic. Our results provide the desired conclusion in the Dynamical Mordell–Lang Conjecture in a couple new instances. Moreover, our results have interesting consequences toward a conjecture of Rubel and toward a generalized Skolem–Mahler–Lech problem proposed by Wibmer in the context of difference equations. In the appendix it is shown that the results can also be used to construct Picard–Vessiot extensions in the ring of sequences.

In [10] it was proved that, if X denotes a non singular surface which is a complete intersection in (k an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0) and C an irreducible curve on X, which is a set-theoretic complete intersection in X, then C is actually a complete intersection in X; the key point was to show that Pic (X) modulo the subgroup generated by the class of is torsion-free.

Abstract We study the automorphisms of a function field of genus g ≥ 2 over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0. More precisely, we show that the order of a nilpotent subgroup G of its automorphism group is bounded by 16 (g – 1) when G is not a p-group. We show that if |G| = 16(g – 1), then g – 1 is a power of 2. Furthermore, we provide an infinite family of function fields attaining the bound.
