Unique stochastic Lagrangian particle dispersion models for inhomogeneous turbulent flows

It is well established that Lagrangian particle dispersion models, for inhomogeneous turbulent flows, must satisfy the ‘well-mixed condition’ of Thomson (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 180, 1987, pp. 529–556) in order to produce physically reasonable results. In more than one dimension, however, the well-mixed condition is not sufficient to define the dispersion model uniquely. The non-uniqueness, which is related to the rotational degrees of freedom of particle trajectories, permits models with trajectory curvatures and velocity autocorrelation functions which are clearly unphysical. A spin condition is therefore introduced to constrain the models. It requires an ensemble of particles with fixed initial position and velocity to have, at short times, expected angular momentum, measured relative to the mean position and velocity of an ensemble of fluid particles with initially random velocity, equal to the relative angular momentum of the mean flow at the ensemble mean location. The resulting unique model is found explicitly for the canonical example of inhomogeneous Gaussian turbulence and is characterised by accelerations which are exponential in the particle velocity. A simpler unique model with a quadratic acceleration is obtained using a weaker version of the spin condition. Unlike previous models, the unique models defined by the spin condition lead to particles having the correct (ensemble mean) angular speed in a turbulent flow in solid-body rotation. The properties of the new models are discussed in the settings of a turbulent channel flow and an idealised turbulent atmospheric boundary-layer flow.

Abstract. A rigorous methodology for the evaluation of integration schemes for Lagrangian particle dispersion models (LPDMs) is presented. A series of one-dimensional test problems are introduced, for which the Fokker-Planck equation is solved numerically using a finite-difference discretisation in physical space, and a Hermite function expansion in velocity space. Numerical convergence errors in the Fokker-Planck equation solutions are shown to be much less than the statistical error associated with a practical-sized ensemble (N = 106) of LPDM solutions, hence the former can be used to validate the latter. The test problems are then used to evaluate commonly used LPDM integration schemes. The results allow for optimal time-step selection for each scheme, given a required level of accuracy. The following recommendations are made for use in operational models. First, if computational constraints require the use of moderate to long time steps it is more accurate to solve the random displacement model approximation to the LPDM, rather than use existing schemes designed for long time-steps. Second, useful gains in numerical accuracy can be obtained, at moderate additional computational cost, by using the relatively simple "small-noise" scheme of Honeycutt.

Modeling of turbulent flows in axial turbomachines is challenging due to the high spatial and temporal variability in the distribution of the strain rate components, especially in the tip region of rotor blades. High-resolution stereo-particle image velocimetry (SPIV) measurements performed in a refractive index-matched facility in a series of closely spaced planes provide a comprehensive database for determining all the terms in the Reynolds stress and strain rate tensors. Results are also used for calculating the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) production rate and transport terms by mean flow and turbulence. They elucidate some but not all of the observed phenomena, such as the high anisotropy, high turbulence levels in the vicinity of the tip leakage vortex (TLV) center, and in the shear layer connecting it to the blade suction side (SS) tip corner. The applicability of popular Reynolds stress models based on eddy viscosity is also evaluated by calculating it from the ratio between stress and strain rate components. Results vary substantially, depending on which components are involved, ranging from very large positive to negative values. In some areas, e.g., in the tip gap and around the TLV, the local stresses and strain rates do not appear to be correlated at all. In terms of effect on the mean flow, for most of the tip region, the mean advection terms are much higher than the Reynolds stress spatial gradients, i.e., the flow dynamics is dominated by pressure-driven transport. However, they are of similar magnitude in the shear layer, where modeling would be particularly challenging.

We discuss the effect of different types of fluctuations on dynamos generated in the limit of scale separation. We first recall that the magnetic field observed in the VKS (von Karman flow of liquid sodium) experiment is not the one that would be generated by the mean flow alone and that smaller scale turbulent fluctuations therefore play an important role. We then consider how velocity fluctuations affect the dynamo threshold in the framework of mean-field magnetohydrodynamics. We show that the detrimental effect of turbulent fluctuations observed with many flows disappears in the case of helical flows with scale separation. We also find that fluctuations of the electrical conductivity of the fluid, for instance related to temperature fluctuations in convective flows, provide an efficient mechanism for dynamo action. Finally, we conclude by describing an experimental configuration that could be used to test the validity of mean-field magnetohydrodynamics in strongly turbulent flows.

Low and/or oscillatory Wall Shear Stress (WSS) has been correlated with elevated risk for increased intima media thickness and atherosclerosis in several studies during the last decades [1, 2]. Most of the studies have addressed laminar flows, in which the oscillations mainly are due to the pulsating nature of blood flow. Turbulent flows however show significant spatial and temporal fluctuations although the mean flow is steady.

Abstract. Lagrangian particle dispersion models require meteorological fields as input. Uncertainty in the driving meteorology is one of the major uncertainties in the results. The propagation of uncertainty through the system is not simple, and it has not been thoroughly explored. Here, we take an ensemble approach. Six different configurations of the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model drive otherwise identical simulations with FLEXPART-WRF for 49 days over eastern North America. The ensemble spreads of wind speed, mixing height, and tracer concentration are presented. Uncertainty of tracer concentrations due solely to meteorological uncertainty is 30–40%. Spatial and temporal averaging reduces the uncertainty marginally. Tracer age uncertainty due solely to meteorological uncertainty is 15–20%. These are lower bounds on the uncertainty, because a number of processes are not accounted for in the analysis.

A single set of equations is developed to predict the mean flow characteristics in long circular pipes operating at laminar, transitional, and turbulent Reynolds numbers. Generally good agreement is obtained with available data in the Reynolds number range 100 < Re < 500,000.

This paper reports an investigation of the effects of adverse pressure gradient on turbulent flows over forward facing step. Three adverse pressure gradients were created for this study using diverging channels. A particle image velocimetry technique was used to conduct measurements in the streamwise-wall-normal (x-y) planes at the mid-plane of test section at several locations downstream to 68 step heights. A Reynolds number of Reh = 4800 and δ/h = 4.7 were employed, where h is the mean step height and δ is the approach boundary layer thickness. The results include the mean flow and turbulence quantities as well as proper orthogonal decomposition analysis. The mean reattachment length obtained indicates that the adverse pressure gradient created in this study does not have significant effects on the reattachment length. The triple velocity correlations imply that there is negative transport of turbulence kinetic energy close to the wall and positive transport away from the wall. In addition to the physical insight, the high quality data reported are useful for assessing the ability of turbulence models to reproduce the behaviour of complex flows.

This paper reports an experimental study of the combined effects of rib roughness and pressure gradient on turbulent flows produced in asymmetric converging and diverging channels. Transverse square ribs with pitch-to-height ratio of 4 were attached to the bottom wall of the channel to produce the rib roughness. A particle image velocimetry technique was used to conduct measurements at several streamwise-transverse planes located upstream, within, and downstream of the converging and diverging sections of the channel. From these measurements, the mean velocities and turbulent statistics at the top plane of the ribs and across the channel were obtained. The data revealed non-negligible wall-normal motion and interaction between the cavities and overlying boundary layers. The different drag characteristics of the rough bottom wall and the smooth top wall produced asymmetric distributions of mean velocity and turbulent statistics across the channel. The asymmetry of these profiles is most extreme in the presence of adverse pressure gradient. Because of the manner in which pressure gradient modifies the mean flow and turbulence production, it was found that the streamwise turbulence intensity and Reynolds shear stress in the vicinity of the ribs are lower in the adverse pressure gradient than in the favorable pressure gradient channel. The results show also that the combined effects of rib roughness and adverse pressure gradient on the turbulent intensity statistics are significantly higher than when roughness and adverse pressure gradient are applied in isolation.
