Taxonomic status of some species of Aspidostomatidae (Bryozoa, Cheilostomata) from the Oligocene and Miocene of Patagonia (Argentina)

AbstractThe bryozoan genus Aspidostoma Hincks, 1881 has been regarded as the only representative of the Aspidostomatidae Jullien, 1888 in Argentina to date. Its type species, Aspidostoma giganteum (Busk, 1854), is presently distributed in the Magellanic Region (Argentina and Chile) and has been recorded in Oligocene and Miocene fossil deposits of Santa Cruz and Chubut, respectively. New material from San Julián (late Oligocene), Monte León (early Miocene), Chenque (early to middle Miocene), and Puerto Madryn (late Miocene) formations suggests, however, that A. giganteum is not represented in the fossil record. Material from Puerto Madryn Formation previously regarded as A. giganteum is here recognized as Aspidostoma roveretoi new species. Aspidostoma ortmanni Canu, 1904 is revalidated for the species from the San Julián Formation. Aspidostoma armatum new species and Aspidostoma tehuelche new species are introduced for material from the Monte León and Chenque formations, respectively. Aspidostoma incrustans Canu, 1908, from the early Miocene, is redescribed. Melychocella Gordon and Taylor, 1999, which differs from Aspidostoma in having vicarious avicularia and lacking a median ridge and a quadrangular process proximal to the opesia-orifice, is so far represented by three Paleogene species from the Chatham Islands (Southwest Pacific). The material from Monte León allowed us to transfer Aspidostoma flammulum Canu, 1908 to Melychocella, resulting in the new combination Melychocella flammula (Canu, 1908). Melychocella biperforata new species is described from the lower Miocene Monte León and Chenque formations. A new Tertiary gastropod genus, Peonza n. gen., is described, along with two new species, P. torquata from southern Argentina and P. benjamina from southern Chile. These muricacean gastropods, of uncertain familial status, occur in the late Eocene San Julián Formation and in the late Oligocene to early Miocene? Monte León Formation, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. They also were recorded in the (probably) Oligocene Magellanian beds in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, and in early Miocene deposits of the Tres Montes region in the Chilean Canals. In spite of the small number of specimens, Peonza n. gen. seems to have had a wide geographic and temporal distribution.

The genus Merychippus was erected by Leidy (1857), who named as the type species Merychippus insignis. The type specimen of M. insignis is an immature and incomplete maxilla containing a broken dp2 and a dp3. The type comes from the Bijou Hills of South Dakota, probably from the Barstovian (middle Miocene) Fort Randall Formation of South Bijou Hill in Charles Mix County (Skinner and Taylor, 1967), but possibly from the overlying undifferentiated Ogallala Formation, or possibly from North Bijou Hill in Brule County. Despite this enigmatic type, the species M. insignis has frequently been identified in the fossil record, and the genus Merychippus has grown to include all mesodont horses (Stirton, 1940). Conceptually, the taxon Merychippus is considered a horizontal grade rather than a vertical clade (Simpson, 1945, p. 18). As a horizontal concept, the genus Merychippus derived importance as the ancestral group for the many Mio-Pliocene lineages of hypsodont horses. Today, as horse classification is remodeled along cladistic lines, the taxon Merychippus derives importance from its early naming. Several distinctive horse clades extend upward from a middle Miocene radiation (Stirton, 1940; Quinn, 1955). If M. insignis can be placed within one of these clades, then it is likely that the clade will bear the generic nomen Merychippus because of the antiquity of the name.

Through discovery of their males, females described as Homalopoltys Simon (Araneidae) are found to be congeneric with Dolichognatha O.P.-Cambridge (Tetragnathidae). Some of the character states seen in Homalopoltys (type species H. incanescens Simon) do not fit within the current diagnosis of Dolichognatha so the potential transfer is tested using the data matrix of Hormiga et al. (1995). It is found that the synonymy of Homalopoltys with Dolichognatha is justified according to current terms of reference. Both described Homalopoltys species were known only from Sri Lanka. The male of D. incanescens (Simon) (NEW COMBINATION) is described for the first time, and the range of this species is extended to north-eastern Australia. Dolichognatha albida (Simon) (NEW COMBINATION) is redescribed and new material is reported from Thailand but the species is still known only from females. Dolichognatha mandibularis (Thorell), with similar morphology to D. incanescens, is also redescribed but is only known from a single male (Sumatra). Two new species are described: D. deelemanae sp. nov. is from Kalimantan and D. raveni sp. nov. is from north-eastern Australia and New Guinea. The character states that unite the genus Dolichognatha are discussed and some potential new character systems are put forward. Some of the fresh specimens of D. albida and D. incanescens show that reflective tapeta are present in the secondary eyes and the abdominal morphology of these and the newly described species differs from that of other known Dolichognatha species.

A large, diverse, and well-preserved fauna of nonmarine mollusks has been recovered from the late Oligocene to early Miocene (Arikareean) fluviatile and lacustrine sediments that accumulated in four intermontane structural basins of western Montana. The Pupillidae are represented by 10 species, with nine new species and one new subgenus among three extant genera. The Gastrocopta are very diverse, with one new subgenus Ameralbinula represented by three new species, G. obesa, G. russelli, and G. oviforma, while three new species, G. tavennerensis, G. leonardi, and G. conica, are referred to the extant subgenus Vertigopsis Sterki, 1893. Gastrocopta miniscula cannot be referred to a subgenus with certainty. The remaining new species, Vertigo whitei and Pupoides montana, are referred confidently to extant subgenera. Vertigo arenula (White, 1876) is the only previously described species and its description is emended based on new material. The mammalian biostratigraphy of the Cabbage Patch beds is presented.

AbstractThe extinct discoglossid genus Latonia Meyer (1843) was widely distributed in Europa in the Tertiary, and included the largest known discoglossid frogs. Among the characters used by most subsequent authors as diagnostic of this genus, is the presence of dermal sculpturing on certain cranial bones, especially on the maxillae and frontoparietals. The state of this character (presence or absence of sculpture) is unknown in the type species of the genus (Latonia seyfriedi), as well as in some fossils referred to this genus. It is established here that sculpture may be lacking in Latonia; this feature characterizes a new species known from three French localities: Coderet (late Oligocene), Laugnac and "Saint-Gérand-Le-Puy" (early Miocene). Such as feature could correspond to a generic distinction. A revision of the type species is required to redefine the genus Latonia.

Abstract. Two sepiid genera, Notosepia Chapman, 1915, and Sepia Linnaeus, 1758, are described from the Neogene deposits of Australia. A new and unique record of the middle Miocene Sepia sp. is reported from southern Australia. Based on similarities to contemporaneous sepiids, the new sepiid cuttlebone described herein belongs to the genus Sepia. Notosepia cliftonensis is suggested herein to be a descendant of the archaeosepiid stem lineage. Microstructures (lamella-fibrillar nacre is the nacre Type II of septa and pillar prismatic layers) of the excellently preserved cuttlebone of Sepia sp. display a modern character of the phragmocone, fully comparable to the recent taxa. The stratigraphically well-calibrated (based on foraminifera) cuttlebone represents the first unambiguous fossil record of the genus Sepia from the Southern Hemisphere. It significantly extends the biogeographical distribution of modern sepiids in the Miocene and suggests the existence of a sepiid eastward migratory route. Moreover, the presence of both conservative- and modern-type cuttlebones suggests a dual colonisation of Australian waters: the first (archaeosepiid) during the late Eocene–late Oligocene and the second (sepiid) during the early Miocene.

AbstractMelia L. is a small genus of only 2–3 species, which is native to Indo-Malesia, India, Pakistan and southern parts of tropical Africa. Fossil records of Melia are known from the early Miocene to the Pleistocene. Here we describe some mummified fossil endocarps of Melia from the upper part of the Yongning Formation (late Oligocene) in Nanning Basin, South China. These well-preserved stony endocarps are 8–14 mm long and 5–9 mm wide, and have 5 locules with a single spindle seed per locule. We interpret these endocarps as the internal remains of a Melia drupe, and assign them as a new species: M. santangensis sp. nov. This is the only fossil record of anatomically preserved Melia found in China, and also the oldest fossil record of Melia so far reported globally. The fossil record confirms the presence of Melia in Asia at the late Oligocene, and provides evidence supporting the distribution and dispersal hypothesis of the Meliaceae.

The genus Hypeugoa Leech, 1899 is synonymized with the nominate subgenus of the genus Stigmatophora Staudinger, 1881: Stigmatophora = Hypeugoa, syn. nov., and a new combination for the type species is established: Stigmatophora flavogrisea (Leech, 1899), comb. nov. Hypeugoa flavogrisea orientalis Daniel, 1951 is upgraded to species level and also assigned with Stigmatophora: Stigmatophora orientalis (Daniel, 1951), stat. & comb. nov. Hypeugoa radaricola Černý, 2009 is transferred to the genus Miltochrista Hübner, [1819]: Miltochrista radaricola (Černý, 2009), comb. nov. A new species similar to M. radaricola, Miltochrista eugoana sp. nov. is described from North Thailand. The original citation of the holotype label of M. radaricola is corrected. Adults together with male and female genitalia of the new and the similar species are illustrated.

This study deals with minimally speciose epiphloeine genera. Hapsidopteris, based on H. diastenus Opitz, (type locality: México: Jalapa), is the presumed sister taxon of Opitzia Nemésio [type species: O. chiapas (Opitz), type locality: México: Chiapas: 39 km NW Comitán] a bitypic genus that also includes O. apicula, new species (type locality: Bolivia: Santa Cruz: Amboro Road, above Achira Campo). Two species define Iontoclerus Opitz, I. humeralis (Klug) (type locality: Brazil: Parà) and I. sericeus (Klug) (type locality: Brazil: Rondonia: 62 km SE Ariquemes), whose presumed sister genus is the monotypic Pericales, new genus, based on P. albogilvus, new species (type locality: Haiti: Sud-Ouest: Massif de La Selle, Morne d’Enfer). The Middle American bitypic Katamyurus Opitz [type species: K. paxillus Opitz, type locality: Nicaragua: Cerro Chimborazo], which also includes K. albopaniculus, new species (type locality: México: Sinaloa: 14 km NE La Cap. del Taxte), is considered the sister taxon to Ellipotoma Spinola (type species: E. tenuiformis Spinola. Type locality: Colombia). Megatrachys Opitz (type species: Megatrachys paniculus Opitz (type locality: México: Chiapas: 8 km W San Cristóbal) contains two additional species, M. bibara, new species (type locality: Guatemala: Zacapa: 2 km San Lorenzo) and M. truncatia, new species (type locality: México: Chiapas: 47.5 km NW Comitán) and is the hypothesized sister taxon to Pennasolis, new genus [type species; P. merkeli (Horn), type locality: Arizona: Cochise County, South West Research Station, 8 km W Portal], which in addition to the type species also contains P. californica (Van Dyke) (type locality: California: Yosemite National Park, Yosemite Valley. The phylogenetic relationships of two South American monotypic genera have not been deciphered; these are Pteroferus, new genus, based on P. zolnerowichi, new species (type locality: Brazil: Santa Catarina: Nova Teutonia), and Turbophloeus, new genus, based on T. simplex (Schenkling) whose type locality is Bolivia: Santa Cruz: Amboro National Park, Los Volcanes. Lectotypes are designated for Pennasolis merkeli (Horn), Iontoclerus humeralis (Klug), I. sericeus (Klug), and Turbophloeus simplex (Schenkling). The latter binomial represents a new combination whose specific epithet was originally associated with Epiphloeus.

AbstractOmiodes Guenée is redescribed based on all New World species, including the type species O. humeralis Guenée. Four new species from Costa Rica, O. janzeni sp. n., O. hallwachsae sp. n., O. sirena sp. n., O. ochracea sp. n., are described. Ten new synonymies are established : Phostria disciiridescens Hampson is =O. croeceiceps (Walker), Phostria cayennalis Schaus is =O. grandis (Druce), Omiodes ochrosoma Felder & Rogenhofer and Phryganodes gazalis Schaus are =O. pandaralis (Walker), Nacoleia lenticurvalis Hampson, Phryganodes anchoritalis Dyar, and Phostria duplicata Kaye are =O. confusalis (Dognin), O. cervinalis Amsel is =O. martvralis (Lederer), Nacoleia indicata ab. pigralis Dognin and Botis fortificalis Möschler are =O. metricalis (Möschler). One new combination is recognized: O. pandaralis (Walker) was transferred from Coelorhynchidia Hampson. A key and an updated checklist to the neotropical Omiodes species is provided, including O. indicata (Fabricius), a worldwide pest. Ten species that do not belong in Omiodes are retained until appropriate generic placements are identified.
