AbstractObjective:This study aimed to evaluate patients with tinnitus in terms of mean platelet volume and platelet distribution width, and to explore neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, recently reported in the literature as being possible inflammation markers.Methods:This study comprised 64 tinnitus patients and 64 age-matched healthy controls. Statistical significance level was accepted as p < 0.05.Results:Mean platelet volume (t = 3.245, p = 0.002) and platelet distribution width (Z = 3.945, p < 0.001) were significantly higher in the patient group than the control group.Conclusion:The results suggest that a prothrombotic condition might play a role in the pathophysiology of tinnitus.

Purpose: To assess the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM) using the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and mean platelet volume (MPV) as indicators of inflammation and to compare these parameter levels between iERM and control subjects. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 36 patients who underwent vitrectomy-ERM peeling and 39 patients who had cataract surgery. We obtained blood samples from all individuals who participated in the study to investigate these parameters. Results: Seventy-five subjects were included in this study: 36 in the iERM group and 39 in the control group. The mean neutrophil and MPV levels were significantly higher in iERM subjects than in control subjects. The mean lymphocyte level was lower in the iERM group. The mean NLR, PLR, and MPV levels were higher in iERM subjects than in control subjects. Conclusion: The higher NLR, PLR, and MPV levels found in patients with iERM may indicate that subclinical systemic inflammation may associate with iERM.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the correlation of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW) with diabetic nephropathy (DN) and diabetic retinopathy (DR). We searched for eligible studies from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and CNKI up to 1 December 2017. Standardized mean difference (SMD) was calculated with a confidence interval (CI) of 95%. A total of 48 studies were included in our meta-analysis. Compared with patients with type Ⅱ diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and without DR, NLR, MPV, and PDW were higher in patients with DR (SMD = 0.77; 95% CI: 0.49–1.05; P<0.001; SMD = 0.68; 95% CI: 0.36–0.99; P<0.001; SMD = 0.52; 95% CI: 0.28–0.76; P<0.01). Compared with patients with T2DM and without DN, NLR, MPV, and PDW were higher in patients with DN (SMD = 0.63; 95% CI: 0.43–0.83; P<0.001; SMD = 0.81; 95% CI: 0.36–1.25; P<0.001; SMD = 0.70; 95% CI: 0.50–0.90; P<0.001). We also found that MPV was strongly associated with the severity of DR, and NLR was closely related to the degree of DN. Our findings indicated that NLR, MPV, and PDW could be recommended as inexpensive diagnostic biomarkers for DN and DR. However, considering several limitations in the present study, further high-quality clinical studies should be performed to investigate the relationship of NLR, MPV, and PDW to DN and DR.

Introduction.Acute gangrenous appendicitis (AGA) is a common medical condition; however, the grade of appendicitis usually cannot be established preoperatively. We have attempted to identify some indicators, such as the mean platelet volume (MPV) and the platelet distribution width (PDW), to diagnose AGA.Aims.To evaluate whether or not the MPV and PDW are suitable markers to diagnose AGA.Methods.A retrospective study of 160 patients with AGA and 160 healthy patients was undertaken. Disease diagnosis was confirmed based on the pathologic examination of surgical specimens. Patient white blood cell (WBC) count, neutrophil ratio (NR), platelet (PLT) count, MPV, PDW, and hematocrit (HCT) were analyzed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of these indices in AGA.Results.There were no significant differences between the AGA and control groups in age and gender. Compared to the control group, the WBC count, NR, and PDW were significantly higher (P<0.001, resp.) and the MPV and HCT were significantly lower (P<0.001, resp.) in the AGA group. The diagnostic specificities of the WBC count, NR, PLT count, MPV, PDW, and HCT were 86.3%, 92.5%, 58.1%, 81.7%, 83.9%, and 66.3%, respectively. Therefore, the NR had the highest diagnostic specificity for the diagnosis of AGA.Conclusions.This is the first study to assess the MPV and PDW in patients with AGA. Our present study showed that the MPV is reduced and the PDW is increased in patients with AGA; the sensitivity of PDW was superior to the MPV. A decreased MPV value and an increased PDW could serve as two markers to diagnose AGA. The NR had the highest specificity for the diagnosis of AGA.

Objectives: To investigate if preoperative neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), or mean platelet volume (MPV) could be used to predict 1-year mortality in patients undergoing open abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 382 patients who underwent open AAA repair between January 2008 and July 2019. We divided the patients into two groups based on 1-year mortality and compared the preoperative NLR, PLR, and MPV. The patients were then classified into tertiles based on their preoperative NLR (first tertile: < 2.41 (n = 111); second tertile: 2.41 ≤ NLR ≤6.07 (n = 111); and third tertile: > 6.07 (n = 112)). We compared the incidence of mortality and morbidity across the aforementioned tertiles. We performed a stepwise logistic regression analysis to evaluate the predictors for mortality. An additional subgroup analysis was performed by dividing the cases into non-ruptured and ruptured cases. Results: The preoperative NLR was significantly higher in the non-survivor group than in the survivor group (10.53 ± 7.60 vs. 5.76 ± 6.44, respectively, p = 0.003). The PLR and MPV were similar between the groups (145.35 ± 91.11 vs. 154.20 ± 113.19, p = 0.626, 9.38 ± 1.20 vs. 9.11 ± 1.39, p = 0.267, respectively). The incidence of 1-year mortality was 2.7%, 9.0%, and 14.3% in the first, second, and third NLR tertiles, respectively (p = 0.009). Higher NLR (odds ratio 1.085, 95% confidence interval 1.016–1.159, p = 0.015) and ruptured AAA (odds ratio 2.706, 95% confidence interval 1.097–6.673, p = 0.031) were the independent predictors of 1-year mortality in all patients. Moreover, the preoperative NLR was significantly higher in the ruptured AAA than in the non-ruptured AAA group (11.17 ± 7.90 vs. 4.10 ± 4.75, p < 0.001). In subgroup analysis, preoperative NLR (odds ratio 1.144, 95% confidence interval 1.031–1.271, p = 0.012) and PLR (odds ratio 0.986, 95% confidence interval 16 0.975–0.998, p = 0.017) was an independent predictor for 1-year mortality in ruptured cases. Conclusions: We demonstrated an independent relationship between the preoperative NLR and 1-year mortality in patients undergoing open AAA repair, besides PLR and MPV. Furthermore, the NLR and PLR had predictive power for 1-year mortality in ruptured cases.

Background Obesity is a growing public health problem of rapidly increasing prevalence in developing countries. Chronic low-grade inflammation plays a key role in the pathophysiology of obesity. Blood count values and ratios have been used as markers of inflammatory diseases. These parameters may be useful to determine the severity of chronic inflammation in obese children. Objective To determine if red blood cell distribution width (RDW), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) can be useful for determining the severity of chronic inflammation in obese children. Methods This observational, analytic study was conducted in obese adolescents aged 14-18 years at senior high schools in Manado, North Sulawesi, from July to September 2018. Students with congenital anomalies, autoimmune diseases, history of asthma, or malignancy were excluded. Pearson’s correlation was used to analyze for potential relationships between obesity and red blood cell distribution width (RDW), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR). Results There was a negative relationship between obesity and MPV, but it was not statistically significant (r=-0.006; P=0.485). There were positive, but not significant relationships between obesity and RDW (r=0.139; P=0.192), NLR (r=0.155; P=0.166), PDW (r=0.02; P=0.45), and PLR (r=0.146; P=0.181). Conclusion The RDW, NLR, MPV, PDW, and PLR values are not significantly associated with severity of obesity in adolescents.
