Fossil crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda) from the Late Cretaceous cárdenas Formation, east-central Mexico

Twenty-four nearly complete carapace samples were collected at three different localities of the Maastrichtian (Late Cretaceous) Cárdenas Formation in San Luis Potosí, east-central Mexico. The material has been assigned to five families: the Callianassidae, Dakoticancridae, Carcineretidae, ?Majidae, and Retroplumidae. Two genera of callianassid shrimp are described, Cheramus for the first time in the fossil record. Dakoticancer australis Rathbun is reported as the most abundant crustacean element; one new genus and species of carcineretid crab, Branchiocarcinus cornatus, is erected, and a single, fragmentary specimen is questionably referred to the Majidae. The three localities reflect paleoenvironmental differences, exhibited by different lithologies, within marginal marine, lagoon environments. The record of dakoticancrid crabs in the Cardenas Formation extends the paleobiogeographic range of the family and the genus Dakoticancer. Carcineretid crabs, although not abundant, seem to have been a persistent element of crustacean assemblages in clastic environments during the Late Cretaceous of the ancestral Gulf Coast of Mexico.

<p>The fossil record of birds in Gondwana is almost restricted to the Late Cretaceous. Herein we describe a new fossil from the Araripe Basin, <italic>Cratoavis cearensis</italic> nov. gen et sp., composed of an articulated skeleton with feathers attached to the wings and surrounding the body. The present discovery considerably extends the temporal record of the Enantiornithes birds at South America to the Early Cretaceous. For the first time, an almost complete and articulated skeleton of an Early Cretaceous bird from South America is documented.</p>

The extinct Mesozoic wasp family Baissidae is described from Late Cretaceous amber for the first time. Electrobaissa omega Engel, new genus and species, is described from an isolated male preserved in Turonian amber from New Jersey, and represents the latest occurrence of the family in the Mesozoic.

The proctotrupoid wasp family Pelecinidae (Proctotrupomorpha: Proctotrupoidea) is recorded in Early Cretaceous amber for the first time, previous amber inclusions being from the Late Cretaceous or Tertiary. Zoropelecinus zigrasi Engel & Grimaldi, new genus and species, is described and figured from an exquisitely preserved female in Albian-Cenomanian amber from Myanmar. The genus is similar to other fossil pelecinids of the genera Pelecinopteron Brues (Paleogene ambers of the Baltic and Siberia) and Henopelecinus Engel & Grimaldi (Turonian amber, New Jersey). Although two subfamilies have at times been recognized (or even as two families) the Iscopininae are clearly paraphyletic with respect to Pelecininae and therefore of no classificatory value and accordingly synonymized herein (new synonymy).

The genus Astrophiura, which ranks among the most extraordinary of modern brittle stars, is the type genus of the recently resurrected family Astrophiuridae within the order Ophiurida. On account of its absurdly enlarged and strongly modified lateral arm plates, Astrophiura bears a closer resemblance to a pentagonal starfish than to a typical ophiuroid. Although molecular evidence suggests an ancient origin of the Astrophiuridae, dating back at least to the Early Jurassic, not a single fossil astrophiurid has been reported so far. Here, we describe dissociated lateral arm plates from the Campanian of Cringleford near Norwich, UK, and the Maastrichtian of Rügen, Germany (both Upper Cretaceous) with unambiguous astrophiurid affinities and assign these to a new species, Astrophiura markbeneckei. This represents the first fossil record of the family. In addition, the Rügen material included lateral arm plates that superficially resemble those of A. markbeneckei sp. nov. but differ in having spine articulations that are typical of the ophionereidoid family Amphilimnidae. We assign these plates to a new genus and species, Astrosombra rammsteinensis, an extinct amphilimnid with morphological modifications similar to those of Astrophiura, and thus representing a remarkable case of parallel evolution amongst brittle stars looking like starfish.

With over 4,600 species distributed worldwide, the net-winged beetles belong among the most speciose elateroid lineages. Despite this, beetles of the family Lycidae are rare in the fossil record. A new genus and species of Lycidae, Cretolycus praecursor gen. et sp. nov., is herein described based on a single specimen preserved in mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber. Cretolycus praecursor represents the second known lycid from the Mesozoic. A new tribe, Cretolycini trib. nov., is erected for the species, characterised by 11-segmented filiform antennae, 3-segmented labial palpi with an enlarged apical palpomere, and elytra without costae. A catalogue of fossil net-winged beetles is appended.

Two new cirroidean gastropod genera, Alaskiella (family Porcelliidae) and Alaskacirrus (family Cirridae), from the Emsian (late Early Devonian) of west-central Alaska (Medfra B-4 quadrangle) are described. The shell of Alaskiella medfraensis new genus and species exhibits inclined heterostrophic coiling. This shell character is known among other members of the subclass Archaeogastropoda, but is recorded for the first time within members of the superfamily Cirroidea. Inclined heterostrophic coiling of the shell was probably developed independently in several different groups of the subclass Archaeogastropoda. The new genus Alaskacirrus, represented by Alaskacirrus bandeli new species, is the oldest and only known Paleozoic member of the family Cirridae. This suggests that the family Cirridae was separated from the family Porcelliidae since at least Early Devonian time and that it most probably developed from the subfamily Agnesiinae of the family Porcelliidae. Thus, the stratigraphic range of the family Cirridae is at least from Lower Devonian to Cretaceous, an interval of about 350 million years.

Syrphid flies are an important clade of pollinators, and predators on several insect groups. The oldest record of its stem lineage is late Cretaceous, but this family really diversified during the Eocene-Oligocene, with a rather sparse fossil record. Here we describe from the Baltic amber the new genus and species Eoxanthandrus garroustei gen. et sp. nov., the first fossil representative of the Syrphinae ‘group’ Bacchini and Melanostomini. Its closest extant relatives prey on caterpillars, while the other Syrphinae generally prey on Hemiptera. This specialized biology possibly dates back to the middle Eocene.

AbstractThe mid-Cretaceous weevil fossils from the Orapa Diamond Mine in Botswana are studied, and a new genus and species, Orapaeus cretaceus Kuschel & Oberprieler, is described. This fossil genus is placed in the tribe Eurhynchini of Brentidae and compared with the two extant genera of the tribe. With the discovery of Orapaeus, the family Brentidae can, for the first time, be traced back to Cretaceous times, and there is evidence that the brentid subfamilies and perhaps also the tribes were already differentiated by the Middle Cretaceous. By contrast, the modern families of angiosperm plants were evidently not yet established by then. In consideration of the palaeoflora of Orapa, it is concluded that the environment probably was tropical and the area well vegetated, but that no clues are present as to the likely hostplant(s) of Orapaeus. The differences between Orapaeus and the extant Eurhynchini suggest that the fossil insect fauna of Orapa is generally assignable to extinct forms, and these differences do not support a hypothesis of prolonged evolutionary stasis.

Thylacocephalans (Euarthropoda, Thylacocephala) are characterized by their “bivalved” carapace and three anterior prehensile appendages. It is still not clear how they used to live, or what their evolutionary history is. This study focuses on new thylacocephalans from the Late Cretaceous Konservat-Lagerstätten of Lebanon, which yielded the youngest representatives of the group. Three new genera and species are described in the Cenomanian sublithographic limestones of Hakel and Hadjoula, and two new genera and one new species are described in the Santonian chalky limestones of Sahel Alma. Among the specimens from Hakel and Hadjoula, Paradollocaris vannieri, Thylacocaris schrami and Globulacaris garassinoi are the first reports of thylacocephalans in the Cenomanian of Lebanon. Paradollocaris and Thylacocaris are assigned to Dollocarididae based upon their large optic notches limited by rostral and antero-ventral processes, their hypertrophied eyes, and their posterior notches with dorsal and ventral spines. Moreover, Thylacocaris presents a very peculiar character: an optic notch with two strong optic spines protecting the eye. Globulocaris is assigned to Protozoeidae based upon its small carapace with a distinct dorsal notch anterior to a strong postero-dorsal spine. Among the specimens from Sahel Alma, Keelicaris deborae is a new form of thylacocephalans in the Santonian of Lebanon. It presents a very unusual keel-shaped carapace with terraces and punctuations, and is assigned to Microcarididae. The new genus Hamaticaris, presenting a very peculiar hooked rostrum, is also erected for Protozoea damesi Roger, 1946 (Roger J. 1946. Invertébrés des couches à poissons du Crétacé supérieur du Liban. Mémoires de la Société géologique de France (Nouvelle série) 51: 5–92). These two species add to the well-known thylacocephalans from Sahel Alma: Pseuderichtus cretaceus Dames, 1886 (Dames W. 1886. Ueber einige Crustaceen aus den Kreideablagerungen des Libanon. Zeitschrift der Deutschen Geologischen Gesellschaft 38: 551–575), Protozoea hilgendorfi Dames, 1886 and Thylacocephalus cymolopos Lange et al., 2001 (Lange S, Hof CHJ, Schram FR, Steeman FA. 2001. New genus and species from the Cretaceous of Lebanon links the Thylacocephala to the Crustacea. Palaeontology 44 (5): 905–912). The occurrence of such diverse fauna of thylacocephalans markedly increases the diversity of the group during the Late Cretaceous. The diversity and abundance of the Sahel Alma thylacocephalans pose also the problem of causes of their disappearance from the fossil record after the Santonian.

A diminutive paguroid shield from Lower Eocene strata in the Lessini Mountains (northern Italy), recorded several years ago as Paguristes sp. (sensu Beschin et al. 2016), is here transferred to the family Calcinidae Fraaije, Van Bakel & Jagt , 2017, on the basis of the presence of an intra- gastric Y-linea. The new genus and species, Joecalcinus bolcensis, erected here constitute the second known extinct member of this family. We postulate that calcinids derived from the Annuntidiogenidae Fraaije, 2014 during the Late Cretaceous.
