A nonlinear treatment is given for MHD waves that propagate parallel to the external magnetic field in warm multi-species plasmas with anisotropic pressures and different equilibrium drifts. Both the wave electric and magnetic fields obey a derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Soliton solutions are discussed, in particular for plasmas with two ion species.

A self-consistent reductive perturbation analysis for parallel-propagating magnetohydrodynamic waves in warm multi-species plasmas, in which different constituents can have differing equilibrium drifts, leads to a derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the wave magnetic field. Soliton solutions are discussed, including applications to plasmas with two ion species. Such solitons are larger (in amplitude) and wider than in the non-streaming and/or cold-plasma case, other parameters being equal.

Nonlinear MHD waves propagating obliquely to the external magnetic field in warm multi-species plasmas with anisotropic pressures and different equilibrium drifts are treated without imposing the customary quasi-neutrality between the different species or neglecting the displacement current in Ampère's law. The wave magnetic field obeys a vector nonlinear evolution equation, which in the limits of parallel propagation or of both the neglect of the displacement current and the imposition of quasi-neutrality reduces to the vector formulation of the well-known derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

PS/CoPd Janus particles respond very sensitively to application of low external magnetic fields. Owing to the magnetic properties, the PS/CoPd particles may be used, for example, to sense the presence of weak magnetic fields as micro-magnetometers.

AbstractIn continuous casting DC magnetic fields perpendicular to the wide faces of the mold are used to control the flow in the mold. Especially in this case, even a rough knowledge of the flow structure in the mold would be highly desirable. The contactless inductive flow tomography (CIFT) allows to reconstruct the dominating two-dimensional flow structure in a slab casting mold by applying one external magnetic field and by measuring the flow-induced magnetic fields outside the mold. For a physical model of a mold with a cross section of 140 mm×35 mm we present preliminary measurements of the flow field in the mold in the presence of a magnetic brake. In addition, we show first reconstructions of the flow field in a mold with the cross section of 400 mm×100 mm demonstrating the upward scalability of CIFT.

The Schwinger effect in the presence of instantons and background magnetic field was considered to study the dependence of critical electric field on instanton density and magnetic field using AdS/CFT conjecture. The gravity side is the near horizon limit of D3[Formula: see text]D(−[Formula: see text]1) background with electric and magnetic fields on the brane. Our approach is based on the potential analysis for particle–antiparticle pair at zero and finite temperatures, where the zero temperature case is a semi-confining theory. We find that presence of instantons suppresses the pair creation effect, similar to a background magnetic field. Then, the production rate will be obtained numerically using the expectation value of circular Wilson loop. The obtained production rate in a magnetic field is in agreement with previous results.

Oblique propagation of MHD waves in warm multi-species plasmas with anisotropic pressures and different equilibrium drifts is described by a modified vector derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation, if charge separation in Poisson's equation and the displacement current in Ampère's law are properly taken into account. This modified equation cannot be reduced to the standard derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and hence requires a new approach to solitary-wave solutions, integrability and related problems. The new equation is shown to be integrable by the use of the prolongation method, and by finding a sufficient number of conservation laws, and possesses bright and dark soliton solutions, besides possible periodic solutions.

Abstract A Morris-Lecar neuron model is considered with Electric and Magnetic field effects where the electric field is a time varying sinusoid and magnetic field is simulated using an exponential flux memristor. We have shown that the exposure to electric and magnetic fields have significant effects on the neurons and have exhibited complex oscillations. The neurons exhibit a frequency-locked state for the periodic electric field and different ratios of frequency locked states with respect to the electric field frequency is also presented. To show the impact of the electric and magnetic fields on network of neurons, we have constructed different types of network and have shown the network wave propagation phenomenon. Interestingly the nodes exposed to both electric and magnetic fields exhibit more stable spiral waves compared to the nodes exhibited only to the magnetic fields. Also, when the number of layers are increased the range of electric field frequency for which the layers exhibit spiral waves also increase. Finally the noise effects on the field affected neuron network are discussed and multilayer networks supress spiral waves for a very low noise variance compared against the single layer network.

The ferromagnetism induced by an external magnetic field (EMF), in (3+1) dimensions, is governed by Kraenkel–Manna–Merle system (KMMS). A (1+1) dimension model equation was derived in the literature. The magnetic moments are parallel to the magnetic field in ferromagnetism as they are aligning in the same direction of the external field. Here, it is shown that the KMMS supports the presence of internal magnetic field. This may be argued to medium characteristics. The objective of this work is to mind multiple soliton solutions, which are obtained via the generalized together with extended unified methods. Graphical representation of the results are carried. They describe infinite soliton shapes, which arise from the multiple variation of the arbitrary functions in the solutions. It is, also, shown that internal magnetic field decays, asymptotically, to zero with time.

Relativistic classical and quantum dynamics of twisted (vortex) Dirac particles in arbitrary electric and magnetic fields is constructed. The relativistic Hamiltonian and equations of motion in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation are derived. Methods for the extraction of an electron vortex beam with a given orbital polarization and for the manipulation of such a beam are developed. The new effect of a radiative orbital polarization of a twisted electron beam in a magnetic field resulting in a nonzero average projection of the intrinsic orbital angular momentum on the field direction is predicted.
