AbstractWe show that the cyclic and epicyclic categories which play a key role in the encoding of cyclic homology and the lambda operations, are obtained from projective geometry in characteristic one over the infinite semifield ofmax-plus integersℤmax. Finite-dimensional vector spaces are replaced by modules defined by restriction of scalars from the one-dimensional free module, using the Frobenius endomorphisms of ℤmax. The associated projective spaces arefiniteand provide a mathematically consistent interpretation of Tits's original idea of a geometry over the absolute point. The self-duality of the cyclic category and the cyclic descent number of permutations both acquire a geometric meaning.

This chapter introduces the concept of stable completion and provides a concrete representation of unit vector Mathematical Double-Struck Capital A superscript n in terms of spaces of semi-lattices, with particular emphasis on the frontier between the definable and the topological categories. It begins by constructing a topological embedding of unit vector Mathematical Double-Struck Capital A superscript n into the inverse limit of a system of spaces of semi-lattices L(Hsubscript d) endowed with the linear topology, where Hsubscript d are finite-dimensional vector spaces. The description is extended to the projective setting. The linear topology is then related to the one induced by the finite level morphism L(Hsubscript d). The chapter also considers the condition that if a definable set in L(Hsubscript d) is an intersection of relatively compact sets, then it is itself relatively compact.

Effects of both the phase and the amplitude inhomogeneities of different dimensionalities on the Greens function and on the one-dimensional density of states of spin waves in the sinusoidal superlattice have been studied. Processes of multiple scattering of waves from inhomogeneities have been taken into account in the self-consistent approximation.

Abstract We modify the rules of the self-organized critical forest-fire model in one dimension by allowing the fire to jum p over holes of ≤ k sites. An analytic calculation shows that not only the size distribution of forest clusters but also the size distribution of fires is characterized by the same critical exponent as in the nearest-neighbor model, i.e. the critical behavior of the model is universal. Computer simulations confirm the analytic results.

The methodology of the solution to the inverse fractal problem with the wavelet transform1,2 is extended to two-dimensional self-affine functions. Similar to the one-dimensional case, the two-dimensional wavelet maxima bifurcation representation used is derived from the continuous wavelet decomposition. It possesses translational and scale invariance necessary to reveal the invariance of the self-affine fractal. As many fractals are naturally defined on two-dimensions, this extension constitutes an important step towards solving the related inverse fractal problem for a variety of fractal types.

AbstractFor the Markov property of a multivariate process, a necessary and suficient condition on the multidimensional copula of the finite-dimensional distributions is given. This establishes that the Markov property is solely a property of the copula, i.e., of the dependence structure. This extends results by Darsow et al. [11] from dimension one to the multivariate case. In addition to the one-dimensional case also the spatial copula between the different dimensions has to be taken into account. Examples are also given.

We shall investigate the asymptotic stability, toward a nonlinear wave, of the solution to an outflow problem for the one-dimensional compressible Navier–Stokes–Poisson equations. First, we construct this nonlinear wave which, under suitable assumptions, is the superposition of a stationary solution and a rarefaction wave. Then it is shown that the nonlinear wave is asymptotically stable in the case that the initial data are a suitably small perturbation of the nonlinear wave. The main ingredient of the proof is the [Formula: see text]-energy method that takes into account both the effect of the self-consistent electrostatic potential and the spatial decay of the stationary part of the nonlinear wave.

In this paper we consider a system of equations describing the one-dimensional motion of a viscous and heat-conductive gas bounded by the free-surface. The motion is driven by the self-gravitation of the gas. This system of equations, originally formulated in the Eulerian coordinate, is reduced to the one in a fixed domain by the Lagrangian-mass transformation. For smooth initial data we first establish the temporally global solvability of the problem based on both the fundamental result for local in time and unique existence of the classical solution and a priori estimates of its solution. Second it is proved that some estimates of the global solution are independent of time under a certain restricted, but physically plausible situation. This gives the fact that the solution does not blow up even if time goes to infinity under such a situation. Simultaneously, a temporally asymptotic behavior of the solution is established.

AbstractWe introduce an associative glueing operation ⊕q on the space of solutions of the Quantum Yang–Baxter Equations of Hecke type. The corresponding glueing operations for the associated quantum groups and quantum vector spaces are also found. The former involves 2×2 quantum matrices whose entries are themselves square or rectangular quantum matrices. The corresponding glueing operation for link-invariants is introduced and involves a state-sum model with Boltzmann weights determined by the link invariants to be glued. The standard su(n) solution, its associated quantum matrix group, quantum space and link-invariant arise at once by repeated glueing of the one-dimensional case.
