Emotional disorder and its assessment within the severe head injured population

SynopsisThis study examined the usefulness of self-report measures of emotional disorder in a relatively acute, severely head injured population (i.e. individuals who had sustained their injuries cwithin the previous two years). The General Health Questionnaire, the Leeds Scales of Depression and Anxiety, and Visual Analogue Scales of Depression and Anxiety were administered to 39 severely head injured subjects and 35 ‘close others’ who were required to give their opinions on how they thought the head injured subjects were feeling. Twenty head injured subjects were re-tested within a week. Results indicated that the head injured are able to reliably complete self-report scales as indicated by the ‘close’ others similar reports. The head injured seem to be relatively aware of their overt behaviours and emotions, at least when utilizing the General Health Questionnaire and the Leeds Scale of Depression. According to the measures of emotional disposition used in the present study, emotional disorder was found to be common. From the results it was further suggested that lack of a close confiding relationship predicts emotional disorder and may be used to identify those subjects at risk. Overall, the results provide confidence for the use of self-report scales as a preliminary approach to the identification of emotional disorder in the severely head injured.

BACKGROUND Most of the Medical Rehabilitation and Applied medical students got disturbed sleep due to academic activities and clinical demands. In our study the relationship between the psychological stress and sleep quality could be useful to organize the mental health program in medical rehabilitation and applied medical colleges. OBJECTIVE The main goal is to evaluate and compare the sleep quality in medical students in various phases of their medical course in order to prevent the effect of stress during their study period. METHODS The effect of stress on sleep quality a cross sectional questionnaire-based study on 300 Medical Rehabilitation and applied medical students, were invited to participate from Taibah University. Among which 271 completed the forms fully irrespective of year of study. The instruments were self-report Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ12) and Depression and anxiety scale were used in data collection. The results obtained from the instrument components were analyzed for the total sample including the male and female students. RESULTS 271 completed the forms and the results shown about the current study was 52.05% of the students have sleep quality fairly bad. In further, there was relationship between sleep quality, general health status of students and depression - anxiety status i.e., significant difference in coefficient correlation r = 0.532, p = 0.0001(p<=0.05). CONCLUSIONS In our study we concluded that most of the Medical Rehabilitation and Applied medical students seem to be more exposed to poor quality of sleep disturbance. Which act as a barrier in examination performance Active interventions should be implemented to improve sleep hygiene, reduce depression and anxiety in medical Rehabilitation and applied medical students.

SummaryThe prevalence of emotional disorder in a total of 72 patients suffering from myasthenia gravis or from peripheral neuromuscular disorders was assessed, using the General Health Questionnaire and Present State Examination.Approximately half the patients were being treated with an alternate day regime of prednisone, receiving high dosage one day and low the next. Emotional disorder was found to be less prevalent among these patients than among patients not on steroids. The significance of the finding is discussed.

A community sample of elderly married couples completed the 60-item General Health Questionnaire and the Leeds General Scales for the Self-Assessment of Depression and Anxiety. Significant concordance was demonstrated between the spouses' scores on these scales. Concordance was higher for depression than for anxiety. There was little to support previous findings that wives are more likely than husbands to be concordant with an ill spouse. The spouse concordance rates for psychiatric morbidity were similar to those found in studies of younger married couples.

Background. Most mental health research tools are developed in Western, urban contexts. Few studies have evaluated the applicability of these research tools in rural populations of non-Western countries. We examined the cultural acceptance and psychometric performance of the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) in China's rural villages.Method. Ethnographic investigations were conducted to assess the cultural applicability of self-report rating scales among villagers. This was followed by a survey of 1401 rural residents, randomly selected from 48 villages of Shandong province using stratified multistage cluster sampling. The respondents were administered the GHQ and the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI).Results. The GHQ, when administered by trained interviewers, was culturally acceptable to rural residents. The scale had good psychometric properties in the study population. The area under the curve was 0·86. At a cut-off of 1/2, the sensitivity and specificity were 80·6% and 79·3% respectively.Conclusions. The ethno-psychometric evaluation showed that the GHQ was both culturally valid and psychometrically sound in the Chinese rural context.
