A recent newspaper article discussing future trends in higher education noted that by 1990 college graduates were likely to have had some “hands-on” experience with computers regardless of their chosen course of study, including the humanities. Nowhere is the impact of the technotronic society more visible than on the college campus today. Computer centers can now be found even at small, traditional liberal arts colleges. Computer manuals are becoming the equivalent of collegiate dictionaries.As it becomes increasingly apparent, even to the anti-technotronic segment of the academic community, that the development and expansion of computer usage is unlikely to wane, the dialogue about the role of the computer on campus is shifting.

First, let me say that it is a pleasure to be asked to comment on the work of Walker Connor, who is a huge figure in the study of nationalism, and has been tremendously influential for me both personally and in my own work. Let me say something personal, first. In the spring of 2005, Walker Connor came to my home university, Queen's University in Kingston, Canada, as a Fulbright Fellow. This was our first Fulbright Fellow and we were thrilled to have an international star in nationalism join us. He was witty, humorous, smart, and very, very kind. He was also – I was struck by this – very generous with his time, with students, and with junior scholars. He talked at length to our graduate students who were working on nationalism. He told me that he enjoyed students very much, and that in his opinion the American liberal arts colleges were excellent places to work because one could see the impact of one's ideas and challenges on students.

Summary This paper focuses on the impact of a personal budget – either in the form of a direct payment or managed personal budget – on the role of unpaid carers of older budget holders. Data were collected via postal survey of 1500 unpaid carers and semi-structured interviews with 31 carers. Findings Unpaid carers played a central role in supporting older budget holders irrespective of the type of budget received. The allocation of a personal budget may have decreased the amount of ‘hands-on’ care they provided, enabling them to do different things for and with the person cared for, but most did not relinquish direct involvement in care provision. Both kinds of personal budget provided greater flexibility to juggle caring tasks with other roles, such as childcare or paid employment. However, carers supporting direct payment users did experience higher levels of stress. This seemed linked to the additional responsibilities involved in administering the direct payment. Carers seemed relatively unsupported by their local Adult Social Care Department: the survey found that only one in five said they had ever received a carer assessment. Application The findings offer a detailed exploration of the impact of personal budgets on carers, suggesting that even in countries with relatively well-developed systems of support for carers such as England their impact remains overlooked. The paper may be of interest to social work practitioners, managers, academics and social work policy specialists working in countries that have, or are about to introduce, personal budgets or other forms of cash-for-care scheme.

Background: In a current scenario, research project and writing a thesis is one of the most important components of PG and Ph.D. studies and a potential area where the students are challenged by lack of structured guidance. Thus the workshop on “Introduction to Statistical Methods & ‘SPSS’ Hands-on Training” was conducted with the objectives, to know the impact of workshop and to obtain suggestions for improvement.Methods: The workshop on “Introduction to Statistical Methods & ‘SPSS’ Hands-on Training” conducted during 7-9 November, 2016 by the Department of Community Medicine, Shri B. M. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre in collaboration with University of Manitoba, Canada. The effectiveness of the workshop was assessed by pre-and-post tests using Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ). Analysis was done using paired t test and Wilcoxon signed rank test.Results: A total of thirty six participants attended the sessions. The overall participant opinion about the workshop was positive. Majority of the participants were female. Majority of the participants were in the age group of 30-35 years (33%), followed by 25-30 years (28%). Majority of participants were MBBS (31%), MD (28%), other degree faulty members (22%) and PhD (22%). The mean score in pre-and-post-test was 12.52±6.17 and 13.98±6.50 respectively (Range=2-27) and was found significant difference in the scores between pre-and-post-tests (p=0.002).Conclusions: The recommendations and suggestions given by workshop participants were to increase the duration of the workshop. Participants were satisfied with the teaching methodology in the workshops.

The aim of this study is to identify the teaching procedures generally conducted by translation teachers, and investigate their impact on the development of students’ translation competence (TC). The study emphasizes the importance of substituting the traditional “read and translate” method for a student-centered teaching approach that relies on hands-on tasks and engaging activities.  These teaching procedures include intra- and extra-mural activities and tasks addressing different sub-competencies and skills and aiming at developing students' general TC. In order to study the impact of these teaching procedures on TC, we implemented a descriptive method that draws upon self-report data and observation of translation teachers and students in a classroom setting. We observed a group of MA translation students in the Faculty of Letters and Humanities in Tetouan and King Fahd School of Translation in Tangiers- Abdelmalek Essaadi University, Morocco. The observation reports and teachers questionnaires provided significant data about classroom practices, while the survey of students’ levels of TC revealed that the respondents’ mastery level of TC ranges from low to high across the different sub-competences. We subsequently compared students’ mastery levels to the general patterns governing the teachers’ teaching procedures, and the findings showed a clear correlation between the two. Accordingly, the type and focus of the tasks and activities performed by students have a direct impact on their TC development.

This article examines the impact of the process of Europeanization on the consolidation of political systems and on the pace of European Union (EU) accession in very difficult transitional environments like those of Croatia and Albania. Croatia, a post-socialist and a post-conflict state, and Albania, heavily burdened with the consequences of its recent isolationist history (which is unprecedented among other post-socialist states), were intentionally selected for this research as atypical cases. Acknowledging the lack of consensus about the Europeanization phenomena in the academic community, the authors decided to rely on indicators that focus not only on institution-building and policy-making processes in the technical sense, but also in the processes of construction and diffusion of formal and informal rules, procedures, styles and shared beliefs, norms and identities that are being transmitted from the European to the national level. Based on qualitative research comparing the two countries – that is, Albania and Croatia – and using a number of indicators, the authors conclude that while Europeanization is an important part of European politics in general and the EU accession process in particular, it does not result in having a uniform impact on different candidate countries. On the contrary, the pace of integration depends on the specific domestic political context, on the role of the institutions, and on the processes of adaptation to the European political environment.

The paper analyzes the impact on the concept of Quality attributable to the innovations introduced by the Apostolic constitution Veritatis gaudium. The document offers not only operational indications but outlines the objectives that the academic community is invited to take up.Three distinct levels of challenges are highlighted: the role of academic institutions and the need to innovate learning systems; the relationship between higher education centres and the whole society; interdisciplinarity and multidisciplinarity as levers to support knowledge. The article concludes with an invitation to reflect on how to initiate the profound reform process to which higher education institutions are called by Veritatis Gaudium.
