AbstractThe Hopf bifurcation theorem describes the creation of a limit cycle from an isolated singular point of a system of first-order differential equations depending on a parameter. This paper describes a method for determining explicitly a range of values of the parameter throughout which the Hopf configuration continues to exist; only the three-dimensional case is described in this paper, but the method can be generalized.

In this paper we consider systems of three autonomous first-order differential equations x˙=f(x),x=(x,y,z),f=(f1,f2,f3) such that x(t)+y(t)+z(t) is constant for all t. We present some Hamilton–Poisson formulations and integrable deformations. We also analyze the case of Kolmogorov systems. We study from some standard and nonstandard Poisson geometry points of view the three-dimensional Lotka–Volterra system with constant population.

We discuss a third-order differential equation, involving a general form of nonlinearity. We obtain results describing how suitable coefficient functions determine the asymptotic and (non-)oscillatory behavior of solutions. We use comparison technique with first-order differential equations together with the Kusano–Naito’s and Philos’ approaches.

We study the Hopf bifurcation for a class of three-dimensional cubic Kolmogorov model by making use of our method (i.e. singular values method). We show that the positive singular point (1, 1, 1) of an investigated model can become a fine focus of 5 order, and moreover, it can bifurcate five small limit cycles under certain coefficients with disturbed condition. In terms of three-dimensional cubic Kolmogorov model, published references can hardly be seen, and our results are new. At the same time, it is worth pointing out that our method is valid to study the Hopf bifurcation problem for other three-dimensional polynomial differential systems.

As we know, Hopf bifurcation is an important part of bifurcation theory of dynamical systems. Almost all known works are concerned with the bifurcation and number of limit cycles near a nondegenerate focus or center. In the present paper, we study a general near-Hamiltonian system on the plane whose unperturbed system has a nilpotent center. We obtain an expansion for the first order Melnikov function near the center together with a computing method for the first coefficients. Using these coefficients, we obtain a new bifurcation theorem concerning the limit cycle bifurcation near the nilpotent center. An interesting application example & a cubic system having five limit cycles & is also presented.
