Aluminum additions to conventional 18Cr-8Ni austenitic stainless steel compositions impart excellent resistance to high sulfur environments. However, problems are typically encountered with aluminum additions above about 1% due to embrittlement caused by aluminum in solid solution and the precipitation of NiAl. Consequently, little use has been made of aluminum alloy additions to stainless steels for use in sulfur or H2S environments in the chemical industry, energy conversion or generation, and mineral processing, for example.A research program at the Albany Research Center has concentrated on the development of a wrought alloy composition with as low a chromium content as possible, with the idea of developing a low-chromium substitute for 310 stainless steel (25Cr-20Ni) which is often used in high-sulfur environments. On the basis of workability and microstructural studies involving optical metallography on 100g button ingots soaked at 700°C and air-cooled, a low-alloy composition Fe-12Cr-5Ni-4Al (in wt %) was selected for scale up and property evaluation.

Abstract Oxide films on stainless steels have been classified into three types according to film thickness, film structure, film composition, and influence of the film on resistance to corrosion. Compositional properties of oxide films isolated from surfaces of stainless steels were studied using specially developed microanalytical techniques. Properties of passive films on stainless steel were evaluated and the effects of alloy composition and surface treatment on other types of films on Types 304, 316, and 347 stainless steels were studied. The influence of corrosion in various media was correlated with film compositional properties. Composition of films after immersion in acids was found to be related to film composition prior to immersion. The effect of immersion depended on the nature and intensity of corrosion and was reflected most sensitively by the iron and silicon contents of the films. The conclusion was made that film properties indicate strongly the capacity of austenitic stainless alloys to develop corrosion-resistant surfaces in certain environments.

Abstract Alloy 19D (UNS S32001), Nitronic 19D, is a lean duplex (ferritic-austenitic) stainless steel developed by AK Steel. Compared to conventional duplex and super-duplex stainless steels, alloy 19D has a reduced chromium content, man-ganese is substituted for most of the nickel, and molybdenum is essentially eliminated. Gibson Tube conducted a development program to produce seam-welded 19D tubing. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, microstructure, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties as well as fatigue. It also includes information on corrosion resistance. Filing Code: SS-841. Producer or source: Gibson Tube.

Abstract ALZ 410S is a ferritic stainless steel with approximately 13% Cr, and belongs with the lowest-alloyed stainless steels. The chromium content has been chosen to be on the threshold of formation of the passivation layer. It has an oxidation and corrosion resistance that is much better than that of mild steel, but cannot be compared with the corrosion resistance of the austenitic stainless steels. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties. It also includes information on joining. Filing Code: SS-830. Producer or source: ALZ nv.

In general, thermal treatment at 500oC ~ 900oC ranges depending upon alloy composition of stainless steels can sensitize the steels and promote the intergranular cracking, and their intergranular corrosion resistance is decreased. These behaviors seem to be related to the change of microstructures. So, heat treatment at that temperature range should be avoided in fabrication, especially welding of stainless steels. In this work, it is focused on the effect of thermal treatment on caustic stress corrosion cracking of super austenitic stainless steel - S32050 The low temperature thermal treatment increased greatly the resistance to caustic SCC than those of annealed specimen. This enhancement might be closely related to the reduction of residual stress and slightly large grain, but its resistance was not affected by the anodic polarization behavior.

The duplex stainless steels (UNS S32304) after solid solution annealing at two different temperature (1323K and 1573K) were subjected to the same cold rolling with ε =3 and subsequent annealing for 230 min at 1323 K . The corresponding interface character distribution (ICD) were determined by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The results show that a larger population of phase boundaries (PB) having K-S orientation relationship (OR) between the neighboring δ and γ grains was introduced and therefore higher intergrannular corrosion resistance (ICR) were resulted in the specimen initially solid-solution annealed at 1573K.
