Abstract FEDERAL BRONZE 822 is a copper-base, high-lead bearing bronze with superior resistance to scoring and seizure beyond the endurance and danger limits of ordinary bearing bronzes. It is used in applications involving high speeds, poor lubrication, heat-generating loads, elevated temperatures, dusty and gritty surroundings, or where a liquid other than oil is used as the lubricant. In this study, we measured the occurrence of organophosphate esters (OPEs) and phthalates in the settled dust (floor and air conditioner filter dust) and in suspended particulate matter (PM10) from different microenvironments (households (n = 20), offices (n = 10) and hotels (n = 10)) of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Bis (2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) was the major pollutant (contributing >85% of total chemicals burden) in all types of indoor dust with a concentration up to 3,901,500 ng g−1. While dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and DEHP together contributed >70% in PM10 (1900 ng m−3), which indicate PM10 as a significant source of exposure for DBP and DEHP in different Saudi indoor settings. Tris (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) was the major OPE in PM10 with a concentration of up to 185 ng m−3 and the occurrence of OPEs in indoor dust varied in studied indoor settings. The estimated daily intake (EDI) of studied chemicals via dust ingestion and inhalation of PM10 was below the reference dose (RfD) of individual chemicals. However, estimated incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) with moderate risk (1.5 × 10−5) for Saudi adults and calculated hazardous index (HI) of >1 for Saudi children from DEHP showed a cause of concern to the local public health.

AbstractIn this research, we successfully fabricated a novel closed pore polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) composite nanofibrous membrane (PCNM) on the substrate of a commercial polypropylene window mesh. First, smooth and uniform PAN/PVP composite nanofibers (PCNs) were manufactured by blending PAN and PVP with a mass ratio of 5:5 during electrospinning. Subsequently, the prepared PCNs were hot pressed in a vacuum drying oven at a given temperature of 90°C. The morphology and filter efficiency of PCN and PCNM were investigated. It was found that hot-pressing treatment significantly affected the pore structure and orientation of PCNM, which contributed to its closed pore structure and good alignment. The filter efficiency results indicated that the hot-pressed PCNMs have excellent removal efficiency of up to 96.8% of fine particulate matter. This research demonstrates that PCNMs have potential as filters for indoor dust removal and will provide a new idea for the development of air filters.

ABSTRACT The Old Copper Complex (OCC) refers to the production of heavy copper-tool technology by Archaic Native American societies in the Lake Superior region. To better define the timing of the OCC, we evaluated 53 (eight new and 45 published) radiocarbon (14C) dates associated with copper artifacts and mines. We compared these dates to six lake sediment-based chronologies of copper mining and annealing in the Michigan Copper District. 14C dates grouped by archaeological context show that cremation remains, and wood and cordage embedded in copper artifacts have ages that overlap with the timing of high lead (Pb) concentrations in lake sediment. In contrast, dates in stratigraphic association and from mines are younger than those from embedded and cremation materials, suggesting that the former groups reflect the timing of processes that occurred post-abandonment. The comparatively young dates obtained from copper mines therefore likely reflect abandonment and infill of the mines rather than active use. Excluding three anomalously young samples, the ages of embedded organic material associated with 15 OCC copper artifacts range from 8500 to 3580 cal BP, confirming that the OCC is among the oldest known metalworking societies in the world.
