A new type of microsized porous spherical LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO-Air) cathode material for a lithium ion secondary battery has been synthesized by an impregnation method using highly reactive nanocupule MnO2 spheres as the manganese source. These LNMO-Air spheres are aggregates of nanosized polyhedron particles with well-defined cubic spinel structure. They showed excellent rate capability and cycle stability, compared with other microspheres of LNMO.

Graphene nanosheets have been among the most promising candidates for a high-performance anode material to replace graphite in lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Studies in this area have mainly focused on nanostructured electrodes synthesized by graphene oxide (GO) or reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and surface modifications by a chemical treatment. Herein, we propose a cost-effective and reliable route for generating a defect-free, nanoporous graphene nanostructure (df-GNS) through the sequential insertion of pyridine into a potassium graphite intercalation compound (K-GIC). The as-prepared df-GNS preserves the intrinsic property of graphene without any crystal damage, leading to micro-/nano-porosity (microporosity: ~10–50 µm, nanoporosity: ~2–20 nm) with a significantly large specific surface area. The electrochemical performance of the df-GNS as an anode electrode was assessed and showed a notably enhanced capacity, rate capability, and cycle stability, without fading in capacity or decaying. This is because of the optimal porosity, with perfect preservation of the graphene crystal, allowing faster ion access and a high amount of electron pathways onto the electrode. Therefore, our work will be very helpful for the development of anode and cathode electrodes with higher energy and power performance requirements.

High energy density and rechargeable lithium ion batteries are attracting widely interest in renewable energy fields. The preparation of the high performance materials for electrodes has been regarded as the most challenging and innovative aspect. By utilizing a facile combustion synthesis method, pure nanostructure LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode material for lithium ion batteries were successfully fabricated. The crystal phase of the samples were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction, and micro-morphology as well as electrochemistry properties were also evaluated using FE-SEM, electrochemical charge-discharge test. The result shows the fabricated LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode materials had outstanding crystallinity and near-spherical morphologies. That obtained LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 samples delivered an initial discharge capacity of 137.2 mAhg-1 at the 0.1 C together with excellent cycling stability and rate capability as positive electrodes in a lithium cell. The superior electrochemical performance of the as-prepared samples are owing to nanostructure particles possessing the shorter diffusion path for Li+ transport, and the nanostructure lead to large contact area to effectively improve the charge/discharge properties and the rate property. It is demonstrated that the as-prepared nanostructure LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 samples have potential as cathode materials of lithium-ion battery for future new energy vehicles.

Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), as one of the alternatives to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), have attracted considerable attention on account of the affluence and low-cost of potassium. Moreover, CoC2O4 and graphene oxide (GO) have been used very well in lithium-ion batteries. Hence, the hybrid CoC2O4/GO was investigated as a new anode material for PIBs. The hybrid CoC2O4/GO was synthesized by a facile and cheap method combined with supersonic dispersion. Electrochemical measurements reveal that the hybrid CoC2O4/GO delivered an excellent cycling stability of 166 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1 and a superior rate capability even at 1 A g−1. These results demonstrate although the cycle ability was insufficient for practical applications, transition-metal oxalates composites can still bring new hope to the development of PIBs.
