PurposeThe purpose is to assess the patient safety culture perceived by healthcare and administrative staff in a Brazilian hospital and examine whether education and experience are related to positive perceptions.Design/methodology/approachA descriptive–analytical case study was carried out at Ernesto Dornelles Hospital, a private Brazilian institution. The Brazilian version of the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture was used to assess the perceptions of 618 participants, of whom 315 worked in healthcare assistance and 303 in administrative services. The main outcome was the percentage of positive responses, and the independent variables included the type of work, schooling and length of experience.FindingsNone of the twelve dimensions was strengthened. The percentage of positive responses was the highest for “Hospital management support for patient safety” (67.5%), and the lowest was for “Nonpunitive response to error” (29%). The healthcare staff had a slightly higher average than the administrative staff. The percentage of positive responses from professionals with undergraduate or graduate degrees was higher for the eight dimensions of safety culture. The length of hospital experience was not associated with any dimensions.Originality/valueThis study explored the influence of education and professional experience on the perception of patient safety in healthcare and administrative staff from a private institution. These approaches allow to know with greater depth and clarity factors that are related to the patient safety culture and, thus, have more consistent evidence to support interventions in specific needs.

This article concludes a two-part review of graduate education in occupational therapy, with the results of a survey of 309 therapists and 68 administrators from the prairie provinces. Three areas were included in the mail questionnaire: graduate program components, potential demand, and factors likely to affect enrolment. Therapists and administrators had remarkably similar response patterns on desirable program components. Therapists expressed a need for graduate level education and administrators indicated a need for therapists with graduate degrees. Therapists indicated a variety of family and financial factors limiting their ability to enroll in graduate study. A small number of administrators indicated that assistance was available.

“Pathways to Public Health” involves undergraduate and graduate degrees offered fully online through Kansas State University (K-State) to both meet the needs of traditional-age learners and professionals in the public health field who will need formal credentialing. This curriculum offers learning with global implications and has a wide potential to benefit global learners. In light of this, this chapter explores potential methods for online branding and identity management for this course series as a central analytical aspect of the program’s development and launch. This chapter will address the following issues: an environmental scan of the global public health environment; the definition of the core identity; a branding strategy using the World Wide Web (WWW), Internet, and Web 2.0 affordances (to reach both internal and external “publics”); an initial risk assessment; legal considerations; work implications of the global branding; the engagement of students and graduates in the branding outreach, and the maintenance of this brand over time.

The growth of art history and art practice courses in Australia has been remarkable over the last 20 years. Unfortunately training for art librarianship has not matched this growth. There are eleven universities in Australia offering graduate degrees and post-graduate diplomas in librarianship but none offer specific courses leading towards a specialisation in art librarianship. ARLIS/ANZ provides opportunities for training and education. Advances in scholarly art research and publishing in Australia, the development of Australian-related electronic art databases, the growth of specialist collections in State and public libraries, and the increased demand by the general community for art-related information, confirm the need for well-developed skills in the management and dissemination of art information.

Governments and institutions are facing the new demands of a rapidly changing society. Among many significant trends, some facts should be considered (Silverstein, 2006): (1) the increment of number and type of students; and (2) the limitations imposed by educational costs and course schedules. About the former, the need of a continuous update of knowledge and competences in an evolving work environment requires life-long learning solutions. An increasing number of young adults are returning to classrooms in order to finish their graduate degrees or attend postgraduate programs to achieve an specialization on a certain domain. About the later, due to the emergence of new types of students, budget constraints and schedule conflicts appear. Workers and immigrants, for instance, are relevant groups for which educational costs and job incompatible schedules could be the key factor to register into a course or to give up a program after investing time and effort on it. In order to solve the needs derived from this social context, new educational approaches should be proposed: (1) to improve and extend the online learning courses, which would reduce student costs and allows to cover the educational needs of a higher number of students, and (2) to automate learning processes, then reducing teacher costs and providing a more personalized educational experience anytime, anywhere. As a result of this context, in the last decade an increasing interest on applying computer technologies in the field of Education has been observed. On this regard, the paradigms of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) field are attracting an special attention to solve the issues derived from the introduction of computers as supporting resources of different learning strategies. In this paper we review the state-of-art of the application of Artificial Intelligence techniques in the field of Education, focusing on (1) the most popular educational tools based on AI, and (2) the most relevant AI techniques applied on the development of intelligent educational systems.

In this article, Gail Thomas uses 1988-1989 degree completion data from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights Survey to track the number of Black and Latino students awarded graduate degrees in engineering, mathematics, and science by U.S. institutions of higher education. Her study reveals the severe underrepresentation of Black and Latino students in graduate programs in these fields. Given the changing racial composition of the United States and projected shortages of science and engineering professionals and faculty by the year 2010, Thomas's findings challenge higher education administrators and policymakers to examine and correct the conditions that hinder the participation of U.S.-born minorities in science, mathematics, and engineering graduate programs and professions.

Abstract Analyzing data on all US employers in a cohort of entering firms, we document a highly skewed size distribution, such that the largest 5% account for over half of cohort employment at firm birth and more than two-thirds at firm age 7. Analyzing linked survey-administrative data, we find that female, African–American, and younger founders are initially less likely to start large firms. The gender gap persists through firm age 7, while racial and age gaps do not. Education is positively associated with start-up size, except for graduate degrees. Prior entrepreneurship and founding team size are positively associated, but team diversity is not. Specifications with capital and industry controls illuminate roles of financial constraints and sectoral choice.
