Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a form of dilated cardiomyopathy that can present as acute life-threatening pulmonary oedema in late pregnancy or early puerperium, its diagnosis is mainly by exclusion of other causes. Morbidity is high due to the reduced physiological reserve in pregnancy. PPCM and severe pre-eclampsia can co-exist and their clinical presentation may overlap, making the diagnosis more difficult and often delayed, with potentially devastating consequences. Here, we would like to share our experience of such a case and present to the readers how we dealt with the challenge. As obstetricians we often do not resort to transthoracic echocardiography, which in our case prompted the diagnosis timely. Lateral thinking and a heightened suspicion does help. Proper diagnosis is extremely important not only for the immediate appropriate management but also for advising long-term lifestyle modifications to minimize risk and counselling for future pregnancy.

Lateral learning in the last two decades can be seen in peer-to-peer learning that is being promoted by new technologies where there are apps that allow students to work together in real time through virtual space, a method which thereby shifts the focus from the solitary self to the interdependent group which lives an educational experience of a collaborative and distributed nature, whose focus lies in instilling the principle of the social nature of knowledge. The ideological bases of lateral thinking are sustained by issues such as emancipation of the student from the authority of the teacher, the relationship of collaboration, permitting the development of individual appreciations and ideas, based simultaneously on those of their peers, on the democratization of knowledge, and so on, which ultimately refers to a collaborative creative education, to a democratic education, and to an education for democracy that assumes the new technologized context in which we live. Because of this, lateral thinking is increasingly influencing everyday life and areas such as education and the arts, as it happens in the post-Internet art, and more specifically net.art (i.e., an online art), which is a collaborative creative experience that has become an instrument which allows us to see a “new type of art in the 21st century.” Net.art, Internet art and the most experimental design, therefore constitutes a community experience that hypertextualizes computerized languages and generates poetic perspectives as artistic practices of lateral thinking. It has bestowed upon us a series of mechanisms to devise collaborative development strategies for lateral learning based on those creative ludic educational experiences of using and interacting with new technologies. This is essential to bear in mind because, as Jeremy Rifkin says, collaborative learning helps students to expand their own self-awareness, including their “self” in reference to diverse “others,” and promotes in-depth participation in more interdependent communities. It extends the territory comprised within the boundaries of empathy.

Organizations and individuals usually have well defined objectives at any given point of time and invest their resources systematically to fullfill the objectives by setting their goal and formulating and following a strategy to chase their goal. Various strategies are used to chase the goal in both organizational and individual cases include competitive strategies or red ocean strategies, monopoly or blue ocean strategies, sustainability or green ocean strategies, survival or black ocean strategies, and mixed or white ocean strategies. The complexities of business decisions after globalization of business and technification of business processes, winning or sustaining or even surviving in current business is considered as an intensive challenge for organizations and also to individuals. In such environment called the turbulent business or social environment for organizations and individuals respectively, a new strategy for survival called “Alternative Strategy” is proposed in this paper and the concept of the strategy, its importance in the current business environment for organizational decisions are discussed. The paper also looks into the understanding of the Generic strategies, their applicability and constraints while identifying the importance of alternative strategy. Eight postulates are developed to support the concept of alternative strategy, and an alternative strategy model is suggested using lateral thinking techniques. The model consists of evaluating and comparing the alternative strategy with primal strategy using ABCD analysis framework. Such model of alternative strategy can be used at operational level, tactical level, and strategic level of any organization to realize its objectives.

To think, means creating patterns out of its surroundings, forming concepts about the observed process. Once the patterns are formed it becomes possible to recognize them. This system is a very efficient way of handling information because patterns are easily formed, combined, and ingrained in the brain. However, it is extremely difficult to restructure them. The thinker is concerned with the observed object of his thinking and not with the thinking or observation. There are several ways to think: wishful thinking, Critical thinking, Lateral thinking, Intuitive thinking, Mindful Thinking, and Integral Transpersonal Thinking. In this article, I will explain the meaning of these distinct ways of thinking as I have learned to understand them. After that I will offer my personal viewpoint on the concepts that I have learned and the impact they have on my life. Over the last 35 years, the study of cavitation in plants has become an accepted and important component of the water stress studies performed by plant physiologists. Although the existence of cavitation had been known since Berthelot’s (1850) pioneering work on the tensile strength of water in glass tubes, the tensions at which it occurred in such systems were far more negative than were considered likely to occur in plants. It is to the late Professor John Milburn’s sharp observational powers, lateral thinking and problem-solving approach — illustrated by his pioneering detection of cavitation in plants — that we owe today’s field of cavitation research. John Milburn was constantly thinking of new ways to approach and solve plant physiological problems. In 1966, Milburn and Johnson published their seminal work on the occurrence of cavitation in plants, using data collected via a record player needle and an amplifier. After the invention of the Scholander pressure chamber (Scholander et al. 1965), it became possible to measure easily the xylem pressures at which plants cavitated. Milburn and McLaughlin (1974) found that such pressures were within the physiological ranges that plants experienced and so the phenomenon of cavitation in plants under stress became a fruitful field of research. Professor John Milburn was tragically killed in a flying accident in 1997. The premature loss of such a great scientist, aged only 60, was felt keenly in the Botany Department of the University of New England, Armidale, Australia, where he had been a Professor for 16 years, and also around the world. This article is a tribute to Professor John Milburn, encompassing several of his key discoveries (a rare recording of the sound of cavitation occurring in the audible range is included in this tribute), as well as some of the many aspects of the man. It is timely, on the 20th anniversary of his death, to remind ourselves that today’s experimental water stress research would be the poorer without John Milburn’s pioneering work.
