Subject. Currently, the use of laser technology is widespread in dentistry in all areas: in surgical dentistry, orthopedic, orthodontics, including aesthetic dentistry. But, despite the widespread use of lasers, in the modern literature not all the advantages of this treatment are described in comparison with traditional methods, including in the treatment of wedge-shaped defects. The most common methods of treating wedge-shaped defects, depending on the progression of the pathology, are reminatory therapy, therapeutic and orthopedic treatment. Thus, the treatment of wedge-shaped defects using the Waterlase Iplus chromium-erbium laser requires a more detailed description. Goal ― on the example of a specific clinical case, show the features and effectiveness of the Waterlase iplus chromium-erbium laser in the treatment of wedge-shaped defects using modern composite restoration material Filtek Ultimate. Methodology. A patient with a wedge-shaped defect in the tooth ... was treated with a Waterlase Iplus chromium-erbium laser followed by restoration with a Filtek Ultimate composite material. Laser was used for retraction of the gingival margin, preparation of the walls of the wedge-shaped defect; then etching, bonding and restoration with Filtek Ultimate Flowable and Filtek Ultimate composite materials. Conducted finishing grinding and polishing of the restoration. Single Bond Universal was used as an adhesive system. Results. The use of the Waterlase Iplus chromium-erbium laser in most cases eliminates the need for local anesthesia, retraction using a retraction thread, and prolonged etching, while ensuring good adhesion of the composite material to dentin and high aesthetics. Conclusions. Treatment of wedge-shaped defects with the use of a laser is an alternative and less invasive method of treatment compared with traditional methods, allowing you to reduce the time the patient is in the dental chair and make the treatment more comfortable.

BACKGROUND: Continuing education (CE) activities help dentists update their knowledge and skills to ensure high standards of patient care. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the reasons for and barriers to attending CE activities including the priorities for different dental specialities. METHODS: The study involves a cross-sectional research design. After statistical consultation, a questionnaire was distributed among 323 dental practitioners in the Eastern province of Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire was checked for face and content validity, and it was pilot-tested before its administration. RESULTS: The response rate was 79.5% as 257 of 323 dentists returned the questionnaire. Most dentists reported that they attended CE activities because of personal learning needs (67.3%) and career development (66.9%). Lack of clinical experience to effectively manage patients and the practice was the least common (15.2%) reason for attending CE activities. Esthetic dentistry (77.4%), restorative dentistry (70.8%), and endodontics (70%) were the three most preferred dental specialities for CE activities. Lack of time was the most common (69.3%) barrier to attending CE activities followed by the cost (62.6%) and the distance (57.2%). More male (n = 104) than female (n = 69) dentists believed personal learning needs a reason for attending CE activities (P = 0.01). Similarly, more male (n = 104) than female dentists (n = 68) considered lack of time a barrier (P = 0.046). CONCLUSION: Most dentists attended CE activities to fulfil their personal learning needs, and aesthetic dentistry was the most preferred dental speciality for CE activities. Lack of time and cost were important barriers to attending CE activities.

Introduction: Today, the appreciation of aesthetic dentistry by society brought to the search for materials and techniques that improve the appearance of smile, which is essential in maintaining physical and mental health of the patient. Objective: This study aimed to report a case of gummy smile involving Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry. Case report: This case, despite other possible alternatives, was solved through periodontal surgery (clinical crown augmentation associated with osteotomy) and indirect restorations with porcelain crowns. Conclusion: In our experience this procedure is safe, predictable, with minimal risks or side effects, and it is a treatment option for these cases.

Until recently it has been difficult for general dental practitioners (GDPs) to access formally recognised postgraduate training while maintaining a full-time commitment to practice. The diploma in restorative dentistry from the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) (FGDP(UK)) allows participants to do just that. In the latest development GDPs now have the option, for the first time, to choose a special interest module in aesthetic dentistry during the second year of the part-time diploma programme.
