The Application of Zirconia in Tooth Defects

Dental caries is among the most prevalent chronic diseases of childhood, affecting larger part of children and adults. Non-treated enamel caries can lead to destruction and then spreads into the underlying softer and sensitive dentine layer. Dental restorative materials are applied to treat and reconstruct damaged teeth clinically and recover their functions. Currently, there are various dental restorative materials available, and many appropriate materials are used to restore dental carious teeth. The applicability of biomimetic principles can elicit innovations in restorative dentistry for tooth conservation and preservation. There are three types of materials commonly used in dental restorations: resin, alloys, and ceramic. During the past decade, zirconia-based ceramics have been successfully introduced into the clinic due to acceptable biocompatibility, lower price compared with gold restorations, and better appearance than traditional metal-ceramic restorations. Recently, zirconia restoration is an acceptable treatment option in restorative dentistry and a developing trend in esthetic dentistry.

Reporting characteristics of systematic review abstracts published in the proceedings of the SBPqO meeting

Aim: This study aimed to assess the reporting characteristics of systematic review abstracts published in the proceedings of the Sociedade Brasileira de Pesquisa Odontológica (SBPqO) meeting. Methods: We selected abstracts published in the SBPqO meeting proceedings of 2019 and 2020, mentioning that a systematic review was conducted in the title, objective or methods sections. One researcher performed the screening and the data extraction after a pilot test training. The following data were extracted: affiliation of the primary author, dental specialization, the term “systematic review” mentioned in the title, reporting of the objective, reporting of eligibility criteria, reporting of information sources, reporting of the number of included studies and if a meta-analysis was performed. A descriptive analysis of the data was performed with data summarized as frequencies. Results: We included 235 abstracts. A total of 20 studies were from the Universidade de Uberlândia (8.5%), and the main specialization was Restorative and Esthetic Dentistry, with 47 studies (20%). Most of the studies mentioned the term “systematic review” in the title (n=219; 93.2%) and reported the objective (n=231; 98.3%). A great majority of studies did not report the eligibility criteria (n=97; 41.3%) or it was classified as unclear (n=96; 40.8%). The great majority of studies only reported the databases searched (n=103; 43.8%) or databases and date of search (n=74; 31.5%). Most of the studies reported the number of included studies (n=204; 86.8%). Conclusion: Based on this study, the reporting characteristics of systematic review abstracts published in the proceedings of the SBPqO meeting are satisfactory. However, there is room for improvement.

Peg-Shaped Lateral Incisors Treated with Ceramic Three-Quarter Crown

In recent years, patients’ expectations are becoming higher in terms of esthetic dentistry. Having the ideal smile is becoming a purpose as the appearance of stars and famous persons have been undoubtedly improved through smile correction. Peg-shaped lateral incisors are a common dental form aberration which could distort the smile and may hamper patient psychology because of the smaller shape and size in disharmony with other teeth. Three-quarter ceramic veneers are a mini-invasive approach which could solve the esthetic problem of peg-shaped teeth and ensure patient’s satisfaction. The present paper was about a clinical case with peg-shaped lateral incisors treated with three-quarter ceramic crowns. It would also highlight the preparation particularities.

On the Ten-Year Success in the Application of Partial Extraction Therapy: A Systematic Review

Hürzeler presented the socket-shield technique (SST) more than 10 years ago. The partial extraction therapy (PET), a collective concept of utilizing the patient’s own tooth root to preserve the periodontium and peri-implant tissue, has been remarkably developed. PET comprises a group of novel techniques for post-extraction implant placement. Several modifications of PET and simultaneous implant placement have been presented since its inception. Since its origin, several alterations have been employed in the methodology of partial extraction of the root and the simultaneous implant placement. A repeatable, predictable protocol is needed to provide tooth replacement in esthetic dentistry. Moreover, a standardized procedure provides a good framework for clinicians to report data relating to the technique with procedural consistency. This review aims to illustrate a reproducible and systematic protocol for the PET techniques with immediate implant placement at the aesthetic zone. The most used technique is the socket-shield technique, which is potentially offers promising results, minimizing the necessity for invasive bone grafts round implants in the aesthetic area, clinical data to support this is very inadequate. The limited research data existing is cooperated by a deficiency of well-designed prospective randomized controlled investigations. The present case studies and techniques are of actual incomplete technical value. Retrospective studies published in limited records but are of inconsistent plan. At this point, it is indistinct whether the socket-shield technique will offer a stable long-time outcome or not

Evaluation of the Knowledge and Practise of Esthetic Dentistry amongst the Practicing Dentists of Private Dental Colleges of Navi Mumbai- A Questionnaire-based Study

Purpose: The inter-disciplinary approach to practise and also should constantly update their knowledge to keep up with the demands that this field presents. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practice of Esthetic dentistry amongst the practicing dentists of private dental colleges in Navi Mumbai, through a questionnaire- based study. Materials and Methods: Self-administered KAP (Knowledge, Attitude, Practise) questionnaires were distributed amongst the practicing dentists of private dental colleges in Navi Mumbai. A total of 100 questionnaires were distributed. Statistical analysis used: Pearson’s chi. Sq. test was applied and the likelihood ratio calculated for each question. Independent T Test was applied for equality of means between the groups, i.e. both gender and graduate and post graduate qualifications. Results: Most of the dentists were aware of the field and practise of Esthetic dentistry, although there were some differences found between the general dentists and specialists in adopting and accepting new dental procedures. According to them, Finances played a major role in opting for an esthetic treatment by patients. Conclusion: With the advances in esthetic dentistry and increased level of patients’ expectations and awareness, practicing dentists should be well versed with the same, by attending continuing dental education programs and courses to update their skill and knowledge. Also Finances plays a major role in opting for an esthetic treatment.

Esthetic Dentistry on Twitter: Benefits and Dangers

Objectives. The demand for esthetic dentistry is growing, and social media constitute the main driving force behind this revolution. Twitter is a leading social media platform; however, there is a lack of research on the pattern of communications and the impact of Twitter on esthetic dentistry. The purpose of this study was to analyze the content of tweets related to esthetic dentistry and to investigate how Twitter has affected the perception of, and demand for, esthetic dentistry. Moreover, it aimed to assess the potential benefits and risks of esthetic dentistry advertising strategies on Twitter as a potential social media platform. Materials and Methods. Using a specialized web scrapping tool made available by the Python programming language, a total of 54,000 public tweets were downloaded from Twitter at real-time by matching specific keywords. The downloaded tweets were manually filtered, and 13,787 tweets were included and categorized into four tweet sets by content. Results. The main categories were tweets regarding specific cosmetic procedure, totaling 56.53% (43.2% for veneers, 13.3% for whitening), advertisements (36.72%), information (5.53%), and general cosmetic dentistry (1.22%). Negative opinions towards veneers and whitening were the most common themes (68.03% and 43.44%). For veneers, illegal use for kids was the most common negative theme (59.7%) and being destructive for whitening (86.3%). Positive opinions counted 6.26% of veneers and 4.3% of whitening tweets. Advertising for whitening products was the second most common between all tweets (16.6%), and advertising for dental practices was the third (14.7%). Presenting facilities/services was the most common marketing strategy for dental practices (49.7%). Twitter was weakly used to circulate educational content (5.5%) and to post reviews (0.75%). Conclusion. Twitter was extensively used to share experiences/opinions towards dental cosmetic interventions. Advertising is another vital use of this platform. However, circulating information was the least common use of this social media. Additionally, tweeters were rarely to post online reviews and specific advices and recommendations regarding esthetic dentistry. Moreover, females tended to participate and tweet more significantly in cosmetic-related topics than males. This platform should be tailored efficiently to target users’ priorities and to improve health literacy and self-care. Twitter was weakly used to circulate educational content according to this study and rarely used to share online reviews.

Sculpting in Dentistry – Requirements, Methods and Limitations in Aesthetic Dentistry: A Minireview

The skill of sculpting is an interesting and important part of restorative and esthetic dentistry. This review article will help achieve an understanding on what we know about this art, the hurdles we have faced, advances achieved, the limitations we still face and would help to gain knowledge and information on how to further advance in the art of manipulation and sculpting of dental restorations. This article aimed to review available literature on manipulation techniques, to summarize the importance of sculpting and to identify methods to face the current limitations of the art.

A case report on gingival depigmentation by scraping method by scalpel

Smile is the most wonderful gesture of the human being. A Person who is genuinally happy shows his or her pleasure in the form of smile. A beautiful smile for sure enhances individual self confidence. A beautiful smile lies in a harmonial balance between competent lips, size, color, and proper alighnment of teeth and the color of gingival tissues. The normal color of gingival is coral pink as in accordance to British population, and pale pink as in accordance to Indian population. However this gingival pigmentation varies among each and every individual in accordance with the color of the skin, various pigments present in human body like melanin, haemoglobin, carotene. However this melanin when secreted in excess, can lead to brownish, blackish, or bluish discoloration of gingiva, and this discoloration is denoted by the term hyperpigmentation, and the procedure to overcome this hyperpigmentation is called as depigmentation. Present case report is on a 21 years old female whose chief complaint was visual blackish display of gums while smiling. So the procedure depigmentation was done by surgical scalpel by scraping method, and the patient showed better results following two weeks after procedure. Esthetic dentistry is a recently emerging branch. People now a days are much more concern about the gingival esthetics and smile design, as they want their smile to be beautiful in order to boost up their confidence. . One of the gingival esthetic for which the people are concerned are the hyperpigmented gingiva. Gingival depigmentation is the process to remove this abnormal pigmented gingiva. The clinician must have a knowledge as for which condition, which type of gingival depigmentation technique can be applie so as in order to make the treatment successful.

COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF INJECTABLE-PLATELET RICH FIBRIN AND HYALURONIC ACID INJECTIONS IN THE TREATMENT OF GINGIVAL BLACK TRIANGLES.

Introduction : Gingival black triangles are cosmetic deformities which occur due to loss or absence of interdental papilla, so reconstruction of interdental papilla have always been a challenging task in esthetic dentistry. This study aims to compare injectable platelet rich brin and hyaluronic acid injections in the treatment of gingival black triangles. Material and Methods : 40 sites were divided into two groups ; Group A and Group B. In Group A, Injectable platelet rich brin was deposited whereas in Group B hyaluronic acid injections were deposited. All the sites were examined for gingival index, plaque index, Papillae presence index and Black triangle area at baseline, 1 month and 3 months follow up. Results : On statistical analysis of the recorded data, results revealed statistical signicant difference in both the groups in Papillae presence index and Black triangle area from baseline to 1 month and 3 months follow up. Conclusion : Injectable Platelet rich brin can be a viable alternative to hyaluronic acid injections in the treatment of gingival black triangles.
