AbstractCities are recognised as central to determining the sustainability of human development. However, assessment concepts that are able to ascertain whether or not a city is sustainable are only just emerging. Here we review literature since the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were agreed in 2015 and identify three strands of scientific inquiry and practice in assessing city sustainability. We find that further integration is needed. SDG monitoring and assessment of cities should take advantage of both consumption-based (footprint) accounting and benchmarking against planetary boundaries and social thresholds in order to achieve greater relevance for designing sustainable cities and urban lifestyles.

An increasing number of initiatives related to Agenda 2030 are being launched. Educators, trainers and teachers are dedicated themselves to interpret the approach to sustainability in light of the climate crisis and within the planetary boundaries. Looking toward the future, the pedagogical professions in their core can help the younger generation to recompose the prospective of “global human”, avoiding the risk of flattening sustainability on purely functional devices that forget the value and relational texture of human dignity. Coordinating experiences is crucial to support a transition both green and human. This means preparing fraternal training environments in which young people experience the culture of relation and proximity, with the intent of realising the sustainable development goals. This contribution presents a laboratory of dialogue on the paradigmatic union between sustainable development and fraternity, experience by young university students.   Professioni pedagogiche. A sostegno di una transizione verde e umana Si moltiplicano le iniziative nel solco dell’Agenda 2030. Educatori, formatori, pedagogisti e insegnanti sono impegnati a interpretare l’accostamento alla sostenibilità, tra l’allarme della crisi climatica e dentro i confini planetari. Volgendosi verso orizzonti di senso, le professioni del pedagogico possono aiutare le giovani generazioni a ricomporre un intero umano, evitando il rischio di appiattire la sostenibilità su dispositivi puramente funzionali che dimenticano la valenza e la trama relazionale della dignità umana. Coordinare esperienze in questa chiave di sostegno a una transizione che sia al contempo verde e umana, può significare predisporre ambienti formativi fraterni in cui i giovani sperimentino la cultura dell’incontro e della prossimità, anche per avverare i sustainable development goals. Il contributo presenta un’esperienza di laboratorio vissuta in mezzo a giovani studenti universitari, di dialogo sul connubio paradigmatico tra sviluppo sostenibile e fraternità.

The paradigm of Islamic economics and finance is guided by the motivation of comprehensive human development (CHD) and its preservation as manifested in the objectives of Sharīʿah (maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah). However, the real world free-market economies are driven by the linear economy paradigm under the influence of Hotelling’s 1931 famous work concerning the economics of exploiting natural resources, in which, the ecological environment is not recognized as a resource. The global financial architecture is designed to protect and preserve the linear economic paradigm. In practice, Islamic finance has also remained a ḥalāl sub-set of this system. The resultant social, environmental, and governance imbalances have recently led to different initiatives sponsored by the UN including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Like the maqāṣid, the SDGs also aim at achieving and preserving human development. In practice, for the first time, a real paradigm shift from the linear to the ecological/circular economy is noticeably taking place, also inducing the transformation of the financial architecture. In this paper, in a broader perspective, we use the CHD and SDGs interchangeably, and discuss a number of paradigmatic and regulatory reforms that will be required to enhance the actual effectiveness of Islamic finance in achieving the ideals of CHD, and the SDGs at large. The paper in fact outlines a wider scope of the potential reform initiatives.

This article aims to describe how the community service benefits young generations, especially students of high school in responding the trash problem in Pekanbaru. The fact that society including students did not possess enough awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) regarding thrash problem was the main reason for the community service event. The community service was conducted in the form of training and empowerment which emphasized the participants’ active engagement. The event has shown some positive outputs such as the participants’ understanding on trash problem and the SDGs’ goals as well as their awareness of role and contribution in creating free-trash environments. These are expected to meet two of the SDGs’ goals; sustainable cities and communities; and responsible consumption and production from non-governmental community side.

Dr. Smith gets straight to the point. Achieving sustainable development requires understanding the linkages within ecosystems and how they support or constrain human development. Improving human development without exceeding planetary boundaries is critical as exceeding such boundaries risks irreversible changes with serious impacts on human development. Dr. Smith presses further by stating that unfortunately, the planetary boundaries for atmospheric CO2, biodiversity extinctions, flows of phosphorus and nitrogen, and global forest cover have already been exceeded. This means that we need to take action to reverse those aforementioned factors to safe levels. Science can help manage our impact on the planet and science plays a vital role in attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Resilience, resilience, resilience! The Caribbean must transform many of its economies, ecosystems and development with climate change in mind. Without strong systems in place, climate change will make easy work of our already fragile region. Human capital is key. Education must play a core role in development and the World Bank indicates that human capacity building is critical to strengthen economic resources and mobility. Dr. Smith ends on a note of caution, stating that research must be directed into problem solving, working to disseminate scientific findings to catalyse effective change. “Climate change is a wicked problem” and all hands need to be on deck.
