Abstract Cinnamic monomers, which are useful chemicals derived from biomass, contain α,β-unsaturated carbonyl groups with an aromatic ring at the β-position. Homopolymers synthesized by addition polymerization of these compounds are expected to be innovative bio-based polymer materials, as they have both polystyrene and polyacrylate structures. However, polymerization of these compounds by many methods is challenging, including by radical methods, owing to steric hindrance of the substituents and delocalization of electrons throughout the molecule via unsaturated π-bonding. Herein we report that homopolymers of these compounds with molecular weights (Mn) of ~18,100 g mol−1 and controlled polymer backbones can be synthesized by the group-transfer polymerization technique using organic acid catalysts. Additionally, these homopolymers are shown to have high heat resistance comparable to that of engineering plastics. Overall, these findings may open up possibilities for the convenient homopolymerization of cinnamic monomers to produce high-performance polymer materials.

The pressure-induced-flow (PIF) processing can effectively prepare high-performance polymer materials. This paper studies the influence of pressure-induced-flow processing on the morphology, thermodynamic and mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP)/polyamide 6 (PA6) blends, PP/polyolefin elastomer (POE) blends and PP/thermoplastic urethane (TPU) blends. The results show that pressure-induced-flow processing can significantly improve the thermodynamic and mechanical properties of the blends by regulating internal structure. Research shows that the pressure-induced-flow processing can increase the strength and the toughness of the blends, particularly in PP/TPU blends.

Aromatic polyimides are well-known as high-performance polymer materials which have excellent properties such as high thermal stability, strong mechanical strength, and superior chemical resistance. However, rigid backbones of oligomers and strong chain interactions result in lower processibility. Our molecular modeling suggests that the enhancement of nanotube solubilization is attributed to the formation of self-assembled intermolecular structures associated with the inclusion of curing agents, in conformity with experimental findings. On the other hand, isolation of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with specific chirality and diameter is critical for achieving optimum performances of SWNTs in various application. Our studies reveal that phenylethynyl terminated imide (PETi) oligomer selectively enriches metallic and semiconducting (6, 5) SWNT.

Abstract Perylenes and perinones are separate groups of pigments categorized within the carbonyl chemical class. The two pigment groups show similarities, for example, in their chemical structural features and, to an extent, in their technical and application properties as high-performance organic pigments. Perylenes constitute a series of firmly established high-performance pigments, offering red and violet colors, and also extending to black. Synthetically, they are derived from perylene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic acid. The perylenes tend to be quite expensive pigments, but their high levels of fastness properties mean that they are suitable for highly demanding applications. In particular, they offer very high heat stability. Two perinone pigments are used commercially. In their synthesis from naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic acid, they are formed as mixtures of the two isomers, which can be separated. The trans isomer, CI Pigment Orange 43, is a highly important commercial pigment, especially for plastics, while the cis isomer, CI Pigment Red 194, is bordeaux in color and is of much lesser importance. The perinone, CI Pigment Orange 43, provides a brilliant orange color and has very good fastness properties. Its commercial manufacture involves a challenging multistage procedure and consequently it is one of the most expensive organic pigments on the market.
