The experiments which form the subject of the present communication were carried out two years ago, and supplement results already published. A brief note of some of the results was read before the Society in June 1904, and was also read before the British Association Meeting at Cambridge in August of the same year.The previous paper discussed the effect of high temperature on the relation between electrical resistance and magnetization when the wire was magnetized longitudinally, that is, in the direction in which the resistance was measured.The present results have to do with the effect of high temperature on the relation between resistance and magnetization when the magnetization was transverse to the direction along which the resistance was measured.

The effect of partial substitution of Ca by x = 0.02 La on the electrical and magnetically properties of two (Bi,Pb):2223 superconductor ceramic S1 and S2 (with different Pb and Sr atomic concentration) were investigated by using electrical resistance and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements. The parameters from linear resistivity data in the normal state and superconducting transition are sensitive to the compounds stoechiomerty. The intergrain critical current density JcJ(T) dependence near Tc obtained from immaginary AC susceptibility data agrees with the assumption of SNS intergrain junctions.


In view of the enormous discrepancies at present existing in estimates of high temperatures, it is exceedingly desirable that strictly comparable thermometric standards should be issued by some recognised authority. Professor J. J. Thomson, in the course of a conversation which I had with him towards the close of 1885, suggested th at such standards could be issued in the form of platinum wire, the change of electrical resistance with temperature being determined by comparison for each specimen before issuing. The object of the present investigation was to test whether, in spite of the B. A. report on the Siemens pyrometer (1874), pure platinum wire might not be possessed of the necessary qualifications for such a standard.

AbstractThe intense stellar SXR and EUV radiation exposure at “Hot Jupiters” causes profound responses to their upper atmosphere structures. Thermospheric temperatures can reach several thousands of Kelvins, which result in dissociation of H2 to H and ionization of H to H+. Depending on the density and orbit location of the exoplanet, as a result of these high temperatures the thermosphere expands dynamically up to the Roche lobe, so that geometric blow-off with large mass loss rates and intense interaction with the stellar wind plasma can occur. UV transit observations together with advanced numerical models can be used to gain knowledge on stellar plasma and the planet's magnetic properties, as well as the upper atmosphere.

The present note is for the purpose of correcting two points in my paper in the 'Philosophical Transactions,' A, vol. 180. First .—I was of opinion that my experiments showed that heating iron above its critical point did not entirely destroy the effects of previous magnetisation. Recent experiments I have made do not confirm this opinion.
