ABSTRACT Tire-pavement interaction noise (TPIN) is one of the main sources of exterior noise produced by vehicles traveling at greater than 50 kph. The dominant frequency content is typically within 500–1500 Hz. Structural tire vibrations are among the principal TPIN mechanisms. In this work, the structure of the tire is modeled and a new wave propagation solution to find its response is proposed. Multiple physical effects are accounted for in the formulation. In an effort to analyze the effects of curvature, a flat plate and a cylindrical shell model are presented. Orthotropic and nonuniform structural properties along the tire's transversal direction are included to account for differences between its sidewalls and belt. Finally, the effects of rotation and inflation pressure are also included in the formulation. Modeled frequency response functions are analyzed and validated. In addition, a new frequency-domain formulation is presented for the computation of input tread pattern contact forces. Finally, the rolling tire's normal surface velocity response is coupled with a boundary element model to demonstrate the radiated noise at the leading and trailing edge locations. These results are then compared with experimental data measured with an on-board sound intensity system.

Gasdynamics of detonation waves was widely studied within last hundred years - analytically, experimentally, and numerically. The majority of classical studies of the XX century were concentrated on inviscid aspects of detonation structure and propagation. There was a widespread opinion that detonation is such a fast phenomenon that viscous e¨ects should have insigni¦cant in§uence on its propagation. When the era of calculations based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier- Stokes (RANS) and large eddy simulation approaches came into effect, researchers pounced on practical problems with complex geometry and with the interaction of many physical effects. There is only a limited number of works studying the in§uence of viscosity on detonation propagation in supersonic §ows in ducts (i. e., in the presence of boundary layers).

Portable X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy is now widely used in almost any field of geoscience. Handheld XRF analysers are easy to use, and results are available in almost real time anywhere. However, the results do not always match laboratory analyses, and this may deter users. Rather than analytical issues, the bias often results from sample preparation differences. Instrument setup and analysis conditions need to be fully understood to avoid reporting erroneous results. The technique’s limitations must be kept in mind. We describe a number of issues and potential pitfalls observed from our experience and described in the literature. This includes the analytical mode and parameters; protective films; sample geometry and density, especially for light elements; analytical interferences between elements; physical effects of the matrix and sample condition, and more. Nevertheless, portable X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (pXRF) results gathered with sufficient care by experienced users are both precise and reliable, if not fully accurate, and they can constitute robust data sets. Rather than being a substitute for laboratory analyses, pXRF measurements are a valuable complement to those. pXRF improves the quality and relevance of laboratory data sets.

Fluid injection at the tip of highly loaded compressor rotors is known to be effective in suppressing the onset of rotating stall and eventually compressor instability. However, using such stability enhancement methods in a multistage compressor might not only stabilize certain stages but has also an impact on radial and axial matching. In order to account for tip injection during the early stages of compressor design, this paper focuses on the development of a method to model the physical effects underlying tip injection within a streamline curvature method. With the help of system identification it could be shown that a rotor subject to the discrete jets of tip injection adapts to the varying flow conditions according to a first order model. This information was used to generate a time-dependent input for the steady equations used with a streamline curvature method and eventually to model the unsteady response of the rotor to tip injection. Comparing the results obtained with the enhanced streamline curvature model to measurement results, good agreement could be shown which raised confidence that the influence of tip injection on axial and radial matching was sufficiently captured.
