AbstractSeveral inorganic/organic nanocomposites were prepared via solution-blending of cage-like octahexyl-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (Oh-POSS) with polystyrene (PS) in THF solvent. FTIR and 29Si-NMR were employed to characterize the structures of the nanocomposites. SEM pictures showed that the sample films were smooth and no POSS aggregation was observed when POSS content was lower than 1.0 wt%. TGA and DSC were used to investigate the thermal property. The results showed that the incorporation of nanosized Oh-POSS enhanced the thermal stability of PS with low POSS content. When 1.0 wt% of Oh-POSS was incorporated into PS matrix, the Tg and Td increased by 7.7 °C and 8.2 °C, respectively. However, higher POSS contents (>1.0 wt%) would deteriorate the thermal property of the nanocomposites due to the severe congregation of POSS..

AbstractHydroboration of trialkyn-1-yl(organo)silanes with one equivalent and two equivalents of 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane, 9-BBN afford dialkyn-1-ylsilanes and alkyn-1-ylsilanes, respectively. The alkyn-1-ylsilane derivatives are stable at room temperature and can be store under dry argon for prolong period of time. These compounds are attractive materials for further rearrangements to afford novel 1-silacyclobutene derivatives bearing Si-alkenyl or Si-alkynyl functionalities. The hydroboration reaction is well controlled by the Si-R1 function, i.e., the starting silanes with R1 = Ph selectively afford hydroboration of one Si-C≡C bond with one equivalent of 9-BBN, leaving the other two functionalities untouched. Under mild reaction conditions (25°C), the starting silanes with R1 = Me lead to mixture containing dialkyn-1-ylsilane, alkyn-1-ylsilane and their respective 1-silacyclobutene derivatives. All new compounds are sensitive towards air and moisture and were studied by multinuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H, 13C, 11B, 29Si NMR) in solution.

ABSTRACTDespite the huge amount of experimental investigations dedicated to the grafting of organoalkoxysilanes on silica, the characterization of covalent linkages remains a difficult task from a spectroscopic point of view. In most cases, the formation of a covalent link is taken for granted and not discussed. 29Si NMR, IR or UV spectroscopies are commonly used to study the modification of silica surface. Herein we report an unambiguous method to evidence the formation of covalent links. It is based on NMR spectroscopy analysis coupled with a rigorous synthetic grafting protocol.
