The work presented herein focuses on simulating the compounding process via a torque rheometer, as well as the relationship between the melt viscosity and the polymer molecular weight (MW). We aim to predict the plasticization of polylactic acid (PLA) using polypropylene glycol (PPG) with different MWs. The rheological properties of the PLA/PPG composites containing PPG with different MWs were systematically studied by capillary rheometry and torque rheometry. The initial degradation of PLA/PPG composites during melt processing was monitored in real time. The results indicate that PPG can significantly reduce the melt viscosity of PLA/PPG composites, leading to obvious pseudoplastic fluid behavior. The lower the MW of PPG, the lower the viscosity of the PLA/PPG composite. The addition of PPG was favorable for the degradation of PLA during processing, and the degradation degree of the composite materials increased as the MW of PPG was decreased.

AbstractThin films (1-24 layers) of bis-zinc ethane-bridged porphyrin dimer (1) have been transferred on solid surfaces, by the Langmuir- Schäfer (LS) horizontal method. The related surface pressurearea isotherm curve shows that in dependence of the film pressure different condensed phases may occur in the monolayer. The inspection of the monolayer by Brewster Angle Microscopy (BAM) reveals the presence of peculiar networks whose structural features seemingly change upon film compression. On the other hand, the Scanning Force Microscopy (SFM) analysis performed on LS films shows fractal networks constituted by nanoscopic supramolecular aggregates, whose shape and size depend again on the LS deposition surface pressure. Finally, also UV-vis spectroscopy measurements indicates that the absorption is almost linearly related to the film thickness that is directly connected to the surface pressure.

The use of sodium propylene glycol for thick juice storage was investigated at Spreckels Sugar Company, in Brawley, California (USA). Sodium-polypropylene glycol has a density of 1.07 and does not mix with thick juice. Therefore it is suitable as a barrier layer. Chemical properties of propylene glycol, and the deposition on the top of thick juice are described. First results of the last campaign are compared with data from previous years. A significantly lower tendency in the reduction of the quality of the thick juice was found.

The work deals with topical issues such as development of composite nanostructured powder materials. The results of creating powders based on the system “aluminum–nitride of silicon” are presented. Complex investigations of the composition, structure and properties of powder materials, as well as coatings formed on their basis by supersonic cold gas dynamic spraying, were carried out. It has been found that the high-energy treatment of a powder mixture of aluminum with nanofibers of silicon nitride provides the formation of a composite powder in which a new phase of the Si(1-х)AlхO(1-х)Nх type is formed, which additionally increases the hardness in the coatings to be sprayed.
