Zinc oxide-ternary heterostructure Mn3O4/ZnO/Eu2O3 nanocomposites were successfully prepared via waste curd as fuel by a facile one-pot combustion procedure. The fabricated heterostructures were characterized utilizing XRD, UV–Visible, FT-IR, FE-SEM, HRTEM and EDX analysis. The photocatalytic degradation efficacy of the synthesized ternary nanocomposite was evaluated utilizing model organic pollutants of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) in water as examples of cationic dyes and anionic dyes, respectively, under natural solar irradiation. The effect of various experimental factors, viz. the effect of a light source, catalyst dosage, irradiation time, pH of dye solution and dye concentration on the photodegradation activity, was systematically studied. The ternary Mn3O4/ZnO/Eu2O3 photocatalyst exhibited excellent MB and MO degradation activity of 98% and 96%, respectively, at 150 min under natural sunlight irradiation. Experiments further conclude that the fabricated nanocomposite exhibits pH-dependent photocatalytic efficacy, and for best results, concentrations of dye and catalysts have to be maintained in a specific range. The prepared photocatalysts are exemplary and could be employed for wastewater handling and several ecological applications.

TiO2 P25 was fluorinated by thermal shock method in order to study the influence of thermal shock fluorination on the surface properties and the photocatalytic activity for the degradation of cationic and anionic organic dyes at different pH values. The surface charge of catalysts was characterized by the pHPZC measurement. The photocatalytic activity of catalysts was evaluated via the degradation of methylene blue (cationic dye) and methyl orange (anionic dye). The results showed that the thermal shock fluorination and the rise of solution pH can increase the surface negative charge of TiO2, which enhanced the adsorption of methylene blue and then improved the photocatalytic degradation of this cationic dye under UV and visible light. On the other hand, after the fluorination, the adsorption of methyl orange on TiO2 was strongly reduced, which limited the photocatalytic oxidation of this anion dye.

A series of ultralong (up to tens of micrometers) MoO3 nanowire-based membranes were synthesized for the treatment of aqueous solutions containing the cationic dyes methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB). This treatment method possesses extremely rapid and superhigh adsorbability (up to 521 and 321 mg/g for MB and RhB, respectively), as well excellent selective adsorption ability of cationic dyes with respect to the anionic dye methyl orange (MO). Moreover, the cationic dyes on the membrane can be desorbed easily, and reusability is good.

N-TiO2-x nanocatalysts are developed by the pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL) technique, a simple and surfactant-free preparation method. The PLAL approach allows synthesizing chemical-morphological fine-tuning water TiO2-based nanomaterials, starting from targets of different nature (powders and commercial high purity targets). The catalytic activity was investigated using methylene blue (cationic dye) and methyl orange (azo dye). A different photocatalytic response was found for the various kinds of N-TiO2-x. In the first 20 min, under UV and visible light, about 50% and 10% of the methyl orange were removed using the N-TiO2-x and TiO2 colloids, respectively. In addition, we observe that the response towards the methylene blue is comparable in all the synthesized samples under UV irradiation while differing by about 30% under a visible lamp. The enhanced photocatalytic response of the N-TiO2-x nanocatalysts with respect to the TiO2 one is dependent on the content of the nitrogen dopant, surface area, and nitrogen-oxygen bonding configurations.

In this study, activated carbon prepared from Acacia crassicarpa barkwas prepared and studied for the potential development of low-cost, carbon-based adsorbents that remove industrial dyes from aqueous solutions. Various spectroscopy techniques and surface analyses were used to characterize the adsorbents. The adsorption of methyl orange (MO) and methylene blue (MB) onto the material was investigated under optimal experimental conditions including temperature, adsorbent dosage, and initial concentration of chemicals. The Langmuir isotherm model was observed to fit the adsorption data well. The maximum adsorption capacities predicted by the Langmuir isotherm were found to be 10.36 mg.g-1 for MO and 15.34 mg.g-1 for MB. The adsorbents were better able to remove the cationic dye than the anionic dye. The results of this study will be useful for future scale-up production of low-cost adsorbents using Acacia crassicarpa for the removal of cationic and anionic dyes.
