Spectroscopic studies of human H-type ferritin in comparison with an archaeal ferritin from Pyrococcus furiosus reveal how kinetics of a common mechanism of Fe(ii) oxidation is tuned differently in these two ferritins.

Kinetics of catalyzed acyl group exchange between acetic-1-14C anhydride and alkyl thiolacetates was investigated. The exchange is not accompanied by chemical reaction and demonstrates the full equivalency of anhydride acyl groups in the process. The rate of exchange is lowered by increasing branching rather than lengthening in S-alkyl substituents. The role of catalyst and structures of possible intermediates are interpreted. Upon existing linear structure-reactivity relationship a common mechanism involving sulfur atom as the reaction site seems to be operative.

We have determined that m-[o-(2-chloro-5-fluorosulfonylphenylureido)phenoxybutoxy]benza-midine [mCP(PBA)-F] is an affinity labeling reagent which labels both polypeptide chains of thrombin, factor Xa, complement component CIS and plasmin. As this means it is reacting outside of the catalytic center, we have called this reagent an exo-site affinity labeling reagent. Progressive irreversible inhibition of these enzymes by this reagent is rapid (k1st 2.5-4.6 x 10-3sec-1), the kinetics of inactivation are consistent with inhibition proceding via formation of a specific enzyme-inhibitor complex analogous to a Michaelis-Menton complex (KL - 115-26 μM), and diisopropylfluorophosphate or p-amidino-phenylmethanesulfonyfluoride Prevent labeling by [3H]mCP(PBA)-F. A molecular model of mCP(PBA)-F shows that the reactive SO2F group can be 17 A from the cationic amidine. The data are consistent with the hypothesis that both peptide chains are required for the specific proteolytic activity exhibited by these proteases and that the peptide chain which does not contain the active site serine is close to the catalytic center. The kinetics of oxidation of [Co(en)2SCH2COO]+ with S2O82- was studied in water-methanol and water-tert-butyl alcohol mixtures. Changes in the reaction activation parameters ∆H≠ and ∆S≠ with varying concentration of the co-solvent depend on the kind of the latter, which points to a significant role of salvation effects. The solvation effect on the reaction is discussed based on a comparison of the transfer functions ∆Ht0, ∆St0 and ∆Gt0 for the initial and transition states with the changes in the activation parameters accompanying changes in the CO-solvent concentration. The transfer enthalpies of the reactant were obtained from calorimetric measurements.

In 1918 the end of the First World War triggered the return of Alsace to France after almost fifty years of annexation into the German Empire. Enthusiastic crowds in Paris and Alsace celebrated the homecoming of the so-called lost province, but return proved far less straightforward than anticipated. The region’s German-speaking population demonstrated strong commitment to local cultures and institutions, as well as their own visions of return to France. As a result, the following two decades saw politicians, administrators, industrialists, cultural elites, and others grapple with the question of how to make Alsace French again. The answer did not prove straightforward; differences of opinion emerged both inside and outside the region, and reintegration became a fiercely contested process that remained incomplete when war broke out in 1939. The Return of Alsace to France examines this story. Drawing upon national, regional, and local archives, it follows the difficult process of Alsace’s reintegration into French society, culture, political and economic systems, and legislative and administrative institutions. It connects the microhistory of the region with the macro levels of national policy, international relations, and transnational networks, and with the cross-border flows of ideas, goods, people, and cultural products that shaped daily life in Alsace. Revealing Alsace to be a site of exchange between a range of interest groups with different visions of the region’s future, this book underlines the role of regional populations and cross-border interactions in forging the French Third Republic.

Abstract Background Early adiposity rebound (AR) has been associated with increased risk of overweight or obesity in adulthood. However, little is known about early predictors of age at AR. We aimed to study the role of perinatal factors and genetic susceptibility to obesity in the kinetics of AR. Methods Body mass index (BMI) curves were modelled by using mixed-effects cubic models, and age at AR was estimated for 1415 children of the EDEN mother–child cohort study. A combined obesity risk-allele score was calculated from genotypes for 27 variants identified by genome-wide association studies of adult BMI. Perinatal factors of interest were maternal age at delivery, parental education, parental BMI, gestational weight gain, maternal smoking during pregnancy, and newborn characteristics (sex, prematurity, and birth weight). We used a hierarchical level approach with multivariable linear regression model to investigate the association between these factors, obesity risk-allele score, and age at AR. Results A higher genetic susceptibility to obesity score was associated with an earlier age at AR. At the most distal level of the hierarchical model, maternal and paternal educational levels were positively associated with age at AR. Children born to parents with higher BMI were more likely to exhibit earlier age at AR. In addition, higher gestational weight gain was related to earlier age at AR. For children born small for gestational age, the average age at AR was 88 [±39] days lower than for children born appropriate for gestational age and 91 [±56] days lower than for children born large for gestational age. Conclusion The timing of AR seems to be an early childhood manifestation of the genetic susceptibility to adult obesity. We further identified low birth weight and gestational weight gain as novel predictors of early AR, highlighting the role of the intrauterine environment in the kinetics of adiposity.

Mononuclear complex [Fe(3-bpp)2](CF3COO)2 exhibits a thermal (HS + HS) ⇋ (HS + LS) transition at ∼226 K which is not associated with any crystallographic transition.
