Abstract Synthesizing hyperbranched polyurethanes in a one step process using commercially available raw materials: these were the primary conditions for this work. By taking advantage of intramolecular reactivity differences of isocyanate groups in diisocyanates in combination with reactivity differences of OH and NH groups in alkanolamines, it is possible to generate in situ AB2 molecules by controlling reactions of specific functional groups towards each other. This AA* + B*B2 approach works without protecting groups and opens up a simple and versatile strategy towards hyperbranched aromatic as well as aliphatic polyureaurethanes. Preferential diisocyanates for this synthesis were 2,4-toluylene diisocyanate and isophorone diisocyanate, whereas diethanolamine and diisopropanolamine were used as isocyanate-reactive counterparts.

The effect of 1.5 wt. % Cloisite 30B organoclay (Cl30B) containing the hydroxyethyl fragments in the surfactant structure on polyamide 6 (PA 6) / functionalized polyolefin (fPO) – a mixture of linear low-density polyethylene and ethylene copolymer with higher olefin – on the structure, mechanical and rheological properties of the materials was studied. The fPO concentration in the blends was varied from 15 to 50 wt. %. The fPO production and the blend compounding were carried out in melt using a twin-screw mixing reactor. The organoclay in the composition of the blends was introduced in two ways: simultaneously with all polymer components (one-step process) and with its preliminary localization in the PA 6 phase (two-step process). It was established that the complex of static and dynamic mechanical and also rheological characteristics of materials and the crystallisability of the components in the blends depend on the way of the Cl30B distribution in the PA6 and fPO phases, as well as on the phase structure of the blends. The organoclay localization mainly in the polyamide phase leads to a 1.3–3.0 time increase of the impact strength of the blends in which fPO forms a dispersed phase and increases their deformation capacity under tension up to 1.2 times regardless of the phase structure. The organoclay blends localized in the PA 6 phase have increased the values of melt flowability and mechanical loss angle tangent at the PA 6 a-relaxation transition and dynamic shear modulus in the temperature range from –100 to 150 °С compared to the materials produced by one-stage technology, which is explained by the blocking of organoclay amide and other polar groups in the structure of PA6 macromolecules in the polyamide phase and by a decrease as a result of this intensity of interfacial interactions with fPO.

AbstractMontmorillonite (MMT) was modified with cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) to obtain organomontmorillonite (OMMT) by stirring and pulsed ultrasonic mixing. Polyamide 6 (PA6)/OMMT nanocomposites were then prepared via in-situ polymerization. The resulting OMMT and PA6/OMMT nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results suggested that the OMMT interlayer distance was greatly increased to 3.13 nm due to CTAB being inter-calated into the MMT galleries. The OMMT interlayer distance was further enlarged to 10-20 nm during the polymerization process. The OMMT layers were exfoliated into nanoscale layers and uniformly dispersed in the molten ∈-caprolactam and PA6 matrix, and exfoliated structure nanocomposites were formed.

Ring-opening polymerization of anionic polyamide-6 (APA-6) requires both an activator and an initiator for the reaction to occur. Typical processing techniques for liquid-molded thermoplastic composite laminates involve infusion of the reinforcement with a premixed monomer solution containing both activator and initiator species. The technique described here is a step toward simplification and automation of the in situ polymerization process for composite laminates. By depositing the initiation functional group onto the reinforcement, infusion of a single stream of inert monomer solution is possible. The technique simplifies the processing equipment required and reduces the risk of contamination. Two separate methodologies derived from a silane and a diisocyanate were investigated. The soluble diisocyanate method was used to successfully demonstrate the single-stream APA-6 processing technique. Glass fiber surface-initiated polymerization was also demonstrated using the silane-derived initiator. The findings represent the first steps toward a new processing paradigm of APA-6 composites.
