Abstract In the present study, a combined use of photonic microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and 3D X-ray tomography is carried out in order to analyze the dispersion and the distribution of raw and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-intercalated kaolinite used as filler in cassava starch-based films. It is shown that the association of these techniques allows a valuable analysis of clay dispersion in polymer-clay composite films. In the case of kaolinite-starch composite films on which this study is focused, it is obvious that previous intercalation of kaolinite with DMSO is an efficient way to improve dispersion and distribution of kaolinite in a starch polymer matrix.

This paper demonstrates how recent progress for real-time solidification observation at SPring-8 synchrotron has contributed to the development of Sn-7wt%Cu-0.05wt%Ni high temperature lead-free solder alloys. Lead-free solder alloys in the composition range Sn-0.7 to 7.6wt%Cu that consist of primary Cu6Sn5in a eutectic Sn-Cu6Sn5matrix have been proposed as solders for application at temperatures up to 400°C for the assembly high current semiconductors. It is shown that trace levels of Al have a marked effect on the solder microstructure and refine the size of the primary Cu6Sn5. The solidification pathway that leads to the refinement was observed in real-time using X-ray synchrotron observations.

ABSTRACTThe microstructure and electrical property relationships in conjugated polymer composites( polyaniline (PAn) or polypyrrole(PPy)/thiokol rubber (TR)) have been characterized by 4-probe method , scanning electron microscope (SEM), x-ray energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and attenuated total reflection(ATR). The electrical conductivities of the two surfaces of the film, with film thicknesses from 0.01mm to 0.30mm, prepared by electropolymerization , were measured . The differences were related to the thickness of the film. As for a similar PPy/TR film, when trichloroacetic acid was regarded as the supporting electrolyte the film thickness was 0.05mm and the electrical conductivity of the surface on the solution side was reduced by about 21.3%. The studies of SEM, x-ray EDS , ATR for the chemical composition and microstructure of the two surfaces of the composite films showed that a reaction layer was present in the films. Moreover , the conductivity changes between two sides of a fold mark in the conducting composite film is discussed.
