Herein, we successfully fabricated a new type of water-soluble, hyperbranched polyglycerol photosensitizer through one-step esterification between water-soluble hyperbranched polyglycerol (hbPG) and fluorophenylporphyrin (FP).

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) holds great promise as an effective approach to kill multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria. In this study, KMnF3:Yb,Er upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were prepared and modified with zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc), a photosensitizer with a major absorption band at 670[Formula: see text]nm. ZnPc absorbs the emission at 660[Formula: see text]nm of the UCNPs producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) which kill the surrounding bacteria. The UCNPs were also modified with Tween to make them water-soluble and biocompatible, and oleylamine to provide positive charges to shorten the distance from bacteria. Detection of singlet oxygen production, bacteria viability test and confocal imaging were performed, respectively. The as-prepared system (UCNPs@ZnPc@Tween) shows enhanced efficiency of PDT against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.

In this paper, we present a new and facile one-step method for the fabrication of a water-soluble graphene-phthalocyanine (GR–Pc) hybrid material by simply sonicating GR with a hydrophilic Pc, tetrasulfonic acid tetrasodium salt copper phthalocyanine (TSCuPc).

Hyperbranched polyglycerol-coated magnetic nanoparticles (SHPG-MNPs) were functionalized with succinate groups to form a draw solute for use in a forward osmosis (FO). After the one-step synthesis of hyperbranched polyglycerol-coated magnetic nanoparticles (HPG-MNPs), the polyglycerol groups on the surfaces of the HPG-MNPs were functionalized with succinic anhydride moieties. The resulting SHPG-MNPs showed no change of size and magnetic property compared with HPGMNPs and displayed excellent dispersibility in water up to the concentration of 400 g/L. SHPG-MNPs solution showed higher osmotic pressure than that of HPG-MNPs solution due to the presence of surface carboxyl groups in SHPG-MNPs and could draw water from a feed solution across an FO membrane without any reverse draw solute leakage during FO process. Moreover, the water flux remained nearly constant over several SHPG-MNP darw solute regeneration cycles applied to the ultrafiltration (UF) process. The SHPG-MNPs demonstrate strong potential for use as a draw solute in FO processes.

Acetylene-bridged bisporphyrins and trisporphyrins having branched bulky bis(carboxylethyl)methyl meso-substituents were synthesized. These compounds showed large effective two-photon absorption cross-section values at 890 nm measured by using a nanosecond Z-scan method. Sodium salt of hydrolyzed trisporphyrins showed broad and red-shifted Q-bands over 900 nm. Two-photon absorption cross-section values of water-soluble dimers in water were similar to, or slightly larger than, those of ester forms evaluated in toluene. Furthermore, the generation of singlet oxygen upon one-photon irradiation for dimers in water was confirmed.
