Abstract In this work, red mud was used as raw material to extract Al and Fe with hydrochloric acid. The high-efficiency polyaluminum iron chloride (PAFC) flocculant was prepared via adjusting the pH of the leaching solution, the molar ratio of aluminum and iron, and the polymerization temperature. The effect of synthesis and flocculation conditions on the flocculation performance of aged landfill leachate was investigated. The results confirmed that the PAFC prepared at the polymerization pH of 2.5, the Al/Fe molar ratio of 8, and the polymerization temperature of 70 °C had the optimum flocculation effect. The flocculation consequences of PAFC and commercial polyaluminum iron chloride flocculant (CPAFC) under different flocculation conditions were compared. The chemical oxygen demand (COD), UV254, chroma and settlement height of PAFC at flocculant concentration of 60 g/L and solution pH of 6 were 72.2%, 79.2%, 82.9% and 9.5 cm (within 90 min), respectively. PAFC has excellent flocculation performance and can be used as a simple, potentially low-cost wastewater treatment agent in industrial applications.

AbstractAlkynes are amongst the most valuable functional groups in organic chemistry and widely used in chemical biology, pharmacy, and materials science. However, the preparation of alkyl-substituted alkynes still remains elusive. Here, we show a nickel-catalyzed deaminative Sonogashira coupling of alkylpyridinium salts. Key to the success of this coupling is the development of an easily accessible and bench-stable amide-type pincer ligand. This ligand allows naturally abundant alkyl amines as alkylating agents in Sonogashira reactions, and produces diverse alkynes in excellent yields under mild conditions. Salient merits of this chemistry include broad substrate scope and functional group tolerance, gram-scale synthesis, one-pot transformation, versatile late-stage derivatizations as well as the use of inexpensive pre-catalyst and readily available substrates. The high efficiency and strong practicability bode well for the widespread applications of this strategy in constructing functional molecules, materials, and fine chemicals.

A sequential multistep reaction toward 5-thio- or 5-selenotriazoles has been established by generation of both copper(I) triazolides and sulfenylating or selenylating agents in situ, starting from elemental sulfur or selenium. This reaction features mild conditions, readily available and broad-scope substrates, good functional group compatibility, high efficiency and regioselectivity, easy operation, and ligand-free CuI.

An efficient cobalt-catalyzed C2α selective C(sp3)–H acyloxylation of 2-substituted indoles with tert-butyl peresters to synthesize diverse 2α-acyloxylated indole derivatives is described. This developed method exhibits mild conditions, low-cost catalyst, and high functional group compatibility. The effectiveness of this chemistry is illuminated by a late-stage modification of methylated indomethacin.

Fabrication of photoelectrodes on a large-scale, with low-cost and high efficiency is a challenge for their practical application in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. In this work, a typical plate-like WO3 photoanode was fabricated with chemical etching of the as-prepared mixed tungsten–metal oxides (W–M–O, M = Cu, Zn or Al) by a reactive magnetron co-sputtering technique, which results in a greatly enhanced PEC performance for water oxidation in comparison with that obtained from a conventional magnetron sputtering method. The current approach is applicable for the fabrication of some other semiconductor photoelectrodes and is promising for the scaling up of applications for highly efficient solar energy conversion systems.

A novel SO2F2-promoted thiocyanation method for the one-step synthesis of thiocyanates through C–O bond cleavage of readily available alcohols with ammonium thiocyanate as the thiocyanating agent was developed. The method avoids the use of additional catalyst, and a variety of (hetero)arene, alkene and aliphatic alcohols reacted with high efficiency in ethyl acetate under mild conditions to afford the corresponding thiocyanates in excellent to quantitative yields with broad functional-group compatibility.

A new visible-light-induced Ir(III)-catalyzed difluoroalkylation–bicyclization of 1,7-enynes with ethyl 2-bromo-2,2-difluoroacetate (BrCF2CO2Et) is described, furnishing a wide range of difluoromethyl-containing benzo[a]fluoren-5-ones in good to excellent yields. The reaction is operationally simple, proceeds with high efficiency under mild conditions, and shows excellent functional group compatibility.

An efficient selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides has been developed by means of AlCl3-promoted oxygen transfer from phenyliodine diacetate [PhI(OAc)2]. AlCl3 proved to be the optimal Lewis acid for the activation of PhI(OAc)2. Various substituted sulfides were selectively transformed into the corresponding sulfoxides in good to excellent yields (≤99%). The high efficiency, excellent functional-group compatibility, broad substrate scope, and mild conditions render the current transformation useful for the synthesis of sulfoxides.

A facile method for the construction of esters through dehydrative coupling of carboxylic acids with alcohols is developed. The reactions are mediated by sulfuryl fluoride (SO2F2) at room temperature and proceed with high efficiency. The method has several advantages including broad substrate scope, mild conditions, excellent functional group compatibility and affords high yields, even on gram scale.
