Multilayer Capacitors

Multilayer dielectric capacitors were fabricated from nanocomposite precursor comprised of BaTiO 3@ TiO 2 core–shell nanosized particles and poly(vinylidene fluoride–hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF–HFP)) polymer matrix (20 vol%). The multilayer capacitors showed very high discharge speed and high discharged energy density of around 2.5 J/cm3 at its breakdown field (~ 166 MV/m). The energy density of the nanocomposite multilayer capacitors was substantially higher than the energy density of commercially used power capacitors. Low cost, flexible structure, high discharge rate and energy density suggest that the nanocomposite multilayer capacitors are promising for energy storage applications in many power devices and systems.

A low-cost and enhanced thermal properties composite material for sensible heat storage in solar thermal energy storage applications is introduced. The proposed material is produced primarily for small scale solar thermal applications. However, it can be utilized for large scale solar thermal plants. The material has the advantages of high thermal conductivity and large energy storage density. The introduced material is composed of a mixture of cement and cast-iron particles. To obtain an optimal mixture, different samples of the material are prepared with different ratios of the cement-iron weights. The thermal conductivity of the produced samples is measured by using the linear heat conduction method. The specific heat capacity of the produced mixtures is calculated by using the Rule of the mixture. The obtained results show that the introduced material has a significant enhancement in thermal conductivity. Where, thermal conductivity as high as ~6.0 W/m.K and energy storage density as high as ~788 Joule/cm3 are achieved. The estimated volume energy density is ~89% higher than that of water. The produced material has the advantage of high energy volume density, being unhazardous, chemically stable, eco-friendly, easy to fabricate, and integrate with solar thermal energy systems and is a low-cost material.

Alkaline zinc-based rechargeable batteries (AZRBs) are competitive candidates for future electrical energy storage because of their low-cost, eco-friendliness and high energy density. However, plagued by dendrites, the AZRBs suffer from drastic decay in electrochemical properties and safety. Redox flow batteries (RFBs) have been recognized as a promising option for scalable and dispatchable renewable energy storage (e.g. solar and wind energy). Zinc metal represents a low cost, high capacity anode material to develop high energy density aqueous redox flow batteries. However, the energy storage applications of traditional inorganic Zn halide flow batteries are primarily plagued by the material challenges of traditional halide cathode electrolytes (e.g. bromine) including corrosion, toxicity, and severe crossover. As reported here, we have developed a bipolar Zinc-ferrocene salt compound, Zinc 1,1’-bis(3-sulfonatopropyl)ferrocene, Zn[Fc(SPr)2] (1.80 M solubility or 48.2 Ah/L charge storage capacity) – a robust, energy-dense, bipolar redox-active electrolyte material for high performance Zn organic RFBs. Using a low-cost porous Daramic membrane, the Zn[Fc(SPr)2] aqueous organic redox flow battery (AORFB) has worked in dual-flow and single-flow modes. It has manifested outstanding current, energy, and power performance, specifically, operating at high current densities of up to 200 mA/cm2 and delivering an energy efficiency of up to 81.5% and a power density of up to 270.5 mW/cm2. A Zn[Fc(SPr)2] AORFB demonstrated an energy density of 20.2 Wh/L and displayed 100% capacity retention for 2000 cycles (1284 hr or 53.5 days). The Zn[Fc(SPr)2] ionic bipolar electrolyte not only offers record-setting, highly-stable, energy-dense, and the most powerful Zn-organic AORFBs to date, but it also provides a new paradigm to develop even more advanced redox materials for scalable energy storage.

Thermal energy storage (TES) systems for concentrated solar power plants are essential for the convenience of renewable energy sources in terms of energy dispatchability, economical aspects and their larger use. TES systems based on the use of concrete have been demonstrated to possess good heat exchange characteristics, wide availability of the heat storage medium and low cost. Therefore, the purpose of this work was the development and characterization of a new concrete-based heat storage material containing a concrete mix capable of operating at medium–high temperatures with improved performance. In this work, a small amount of shape-stabilized phase change material (PCM) was included, thus developing a new material capable of storing energy both as sensible and latent heat. This material was therefore characterized thermally and mechanically and showed increased thermal properties such as stored energy density (up to +7%, with a temperature difference of 100 °C at an average operating temperature of 250 °C) when 5 wt% of PCM was added. By taking advantage of these characteristics, particularly the higher energy density, thermal energy storage systems that are more compact and economically feasible can be built to operate within a temperature range of approximately 150–350 °C with a reduction, compared to a concrete-only based thermal energy storage system, of approximately 7% for the required volume and cost.
