The Biochemical Society is committed to addressing the issues facing women in science. During 2008, we have significantly increased our work in this area. We have published original research in collaboration with the Royal Society of Chemistry and the UK Resource Centre for Women in SET (science, engineering and technology) on how the realities of the doctoral experience affect attrition rates. We have presented the work of the Society at international conferences and there is a section dedicated to Women in Science on the website.

Very few studies of senior female scientists have been conducted in the UK. This chapter explores the careers of 13 senior female scientists in a male-dominated, UK public sector organisation. These women operate within a context which reinforces, ‘think management, think male’ (Schein 2007). Despite this, they have followed traditional career paths of science qualifications and employment. Whilst many parallels can be drawn with other women in science, engineering and technology (SET) these women buck the trend in that they have achieved senior positions and unusually long lengths of service, post-childbirth, despite little or no help from mentors and support networks. Although these women’s experiences of gender relations were variable and they have limited strategic leadership career options, they have sustained a positive work orientation and a strong desire to reputation-build. Notwithstanding their failure so far to break through the glass ceiling, they hold the potential to be role models for others in SET.

In the document was the sentence “From April 2011, funding for the UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (UKRC) will not be renewed.”

In France, little data are available on mental health and well-being in academia, and nothing has been published about PhD students. From studies abroad, we know that doing a PhD is a difficult experience resulting in high attrition rates with significant financial and human costs. Here we focused on PhD students in biology at university Lyon 1. A first study aimed at measuring the mental health and well-being of PhD students using several generalist and PhD-specific tools. Our results on 136 participants showed that a large fraction of the PhD students experience abnormal levels of stress, depression and anxiety, and their mean well-being score is significantly lower than that of a British reference sample. French PhD student well-being is specifically affected by career uncertainty, perceived lack of progress in the PhD and perceived lack of competence, which points towards possible cultural differences of experiencing a PhD in France and the UK. In a second study, we carried out a positive psychology intervention. Comparing the scores of the test and control groups showed a clear effect of the intervention on reducing anxiety. We discuss our results and the possible future steps to improve French PhD students’ well-being.

Abstract Introduction Burnout is becoming an increasingly recognised phenomenon within the medical profession. This study aims to investigate the presence of burnout amongst neurosurgical trainees in the UK and Ireland as well as investigating potential exacerbating and protective factors. Method An online survey was sent to all neurosurgical trainees in the UK and Ireland via the British Neurosurgical Trainees’ Association (BNTA) mailing list. Responding participants anonymously completed the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) and answered questions about known risk factors for burnout including workplace environment, workplace bullying, time spent on leisure activities and sleep and reported likelihood of leaving neurosurgery. We also collated data on responders’ demographics. We compared CBI scores for participants with and without risk factors to determine correlation with CBI. Results There were 75 respondents (response rate 42%) from a range of ages and all training grades, 72% of whom were male. The median CBI score was 38.85 (IQR 17.76). Participants showed a higher degree of personal and workplace burnout (median CBIs of 47.02, IQR 25.00; and 49.14, IQR 19.64, respectively) compared with patient-related burnout (median CBI 18.67, IQR 25.00). Participants with the following self-reported risk factors were significantly more likely to have higher CBIs: workplace bullying (p = 0.01), getting on less well with colleagues (p < 0.05), working longer hours (p < 0.05) and insufficient sleep, exercise and leisure time (all p < 0.01). Those with higher CBI scores were more likely to consider leaving neurosurgical training (p = 0.01). Conclusion We identified a high burnout incidence in a cohort representative of UK neurosurgical trainees, although our results may have been skewed somewhat by selection bias. We determined potential risk factors for burnout related to specific workplace stressors and time for non-work activities. In the future, changes to training curricula should address these issues, aiming to improve training, enhance patient care and reduce attrition rates.

This paper discusses the partnership that Cilip’s Information Literacy Group (ILG) in the UK has been developing over the last 18 months with TeenTech, an award winning, industry led initiative that focuses on helping teenagers understand the career opportunities available within Science, Education and Technology. It focuses on the role of the ILG’s School Representative as co-ordinator of a team of school librarians and university specialists who were tasked with; supporting the group’s new Information Literacy Award creating resources and opportunities to encourage teacher and pupil use of libraries, and with supporting pupil development of information and digital literacy skills within the area of science, engineering and technology across all of the award categories.

Sidnie Manton became best known for her work on arthropod locomotion, and for proposing radical views on the evolution of arthropods that were accepted for a generation. However, her early training was as an embryologist, and the work that she carried out at the beginning of her career still stands as one of the major twentieth century contributions to the study of crustacean embryology. Here, I review her first major paper, largely completed while she was a graduate student, describing embryonic development in Hemimysis lamornae , a small shrimp-like animal found in the seas around the UK. The clarity of her writing and the quality of her figures set a standard that laid the basis for subsequent work, and although not all of her conclusions have stood the test of time, they remain a standard reference for work today. This commentary was written to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society .
