The objective of this study is to compare the performances of catalytic ozonation processes of two activated carbons prepared from olive stone (ACOS) and apricot stone (ACAS) with commercial ones (granular activated carbon-GAC and powder activated carbon-PAC) in degradation of reactive azo dye (Reactive Red 195). The optimum conditions (solution pH and amount of catalyst) were investigated by using absorbencies at 532, 220 and 280 nm wavelengths. Pore properties of the activated carbon (AC) such as BET surface area, pore volume, pore size distribution, and pore diameter were characterized by N2 adsorption. The highest BET surface area carbon (1,275 m2/g) was obtained from ACOS with a particle size of 2.29 nm. After 2 min of catalytic ozonation, decolorization performances of ACOS and ACAS (90.4 and 91.3%, respectively) were better than that of GAC and PAC (84.6 and 81.2%, respectively). Experimental results showed that production of porous ACs with high surface area from olive and apricot stones is feasible in Turkey.

Experimental investigations on removal of lead contamination from polluted water by adsorption technique using local fish scales i.e.Tilapia and Merah (Oreochromos and Lutjanus). The fish scales adsorbent equilibrated nearly approaching 100% of Pb uptake over the range of concentrations and pH studied. Unexpectedly, the performance of fish scales as an adsorbent is better as compared to commercially available activated carbon.

The object of this study was to prepare activated carbons containing nitrogenous functional groups by a chemical method from nitrogen-containing raw materials. Fish (Ctenopharyngodon idellus) scales were impregnated with phosphoric acid (H3PO4) and activated at varied temperatures. The adsorption ability, structural characteristics, surface chemistry, and morphology of the activated carbons were characterized by methylene blue and iodine values, nitrogen adsorption, the Boehm method, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The total alkaline groups content of the activated carbon produced from fish scales was 0.4330 mmol/g, the total acidic groups was 1.68 mmol/g, the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area was 501 cm2/g, and the total pore volume was 0.284 cm3/g. The average pore diameter was 1.94 nm under an activation temperature of 550 °C, an activation time of 1 h, and an impregnation ratio of 2. As a result of this study, nitrogenous functional groups that contained acid-base amphoteric adsorbent were produced.

In the present work, activated carbon was prepared from rubber seed coat by physicochemical activation for the removal of Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR) dye from aqueous solution. The effects of dye initial concentration, contact time, solution temperature and pH on RBBR adsorption onto rubber seed coat based activated carbon (RSCAC) were investigated. The adsorption uptake was found to increase with increase in initial dye concentration and contact time. Change in temperature and pH also played an important role to RBBR adsorption capability. Study showed that rubber seed coat is suitable to be used as activated carbon precursor.
