Socio-economic portrait of Polish anglers: implications for recreational fisheries management in freshwater bodies

Recreational fisheries are an important element of contemporary fisheries. Detailed information about the motivation and opinions of anglers regarding catch-and-release fishing in post-communist countries, such as Poland, has not been widely available to date. The aim of this study was to fill this gap. We obtained 936 survey questionnaires completed by anglers from throughout Poland. The mean annual catch of a Polish angler is 126 fish weighing 46.1 kg. Anglers catch mainly cyprinids, but they would prefer to catch large predatory fishes, and they spend an average of 416.50 EUR on this activity annually. These results confirm the hypothesis that angling catches in Poland are decidedly of a recreational character and that catches targeted at fish consumption are of lesser importance. Simultaneously, we determined that younger anglers are more willing to release caught fish than older anglers.

In this study, we determined the prevalence and seasonal dynamic of the infection of the Rutilis rutilis, Lіnnaeus 1758 with the nematode Eustrongylides excisus. The fish was caught in the waters of the Dnipro-Buh estuary in seven sample collection sites between 2016 and 2019. They all underwent ichthyopathological examination. Parasites, found during examination, undergone microscopy to determine their taxonomy. Overall 595 specimens were obtained. The mean prevalence of infection over entire study period (2016–2019) was 17.4 %. Ichthyopathological examination of the roach caught in the waters of the Dnipro-Buh estuary revealed the infection with larvae E. excises nematode. The parasitic larvae were found in the muscles of the ventral abdominal wall of the roach. There was more than two-fold difference in the prevalence of infection between sample collection sites – from 12 % in site 5 near Sofiivka to 28 % in site 3 near the village Oleksandrivka over the study period in 2016–2019. The total prevalence of infection in roaches in the Dnipro-Buh estuary was 17.4 %. Seasonal changes were not statistically significant and ranged from 12.8 % in summer to 20.1 % in spring. Annual changes suggested a possible upward trend, but more observations are needed to confirm it. Аnnual changes were not statistically significant. The prevalence of infection changed throughout the year: there were two peaks in spring (20.1 %) and autumn (18.3 %). In summer (12.8 %) and winter (15.1 %) the prevalence of infection was lower. Morphologically, the E. excisus larvae found in roaches were different compared to those found in predatory fishes: they had more pale color and were smaller in length. E. excisus is a prevalent infection of roach in Dnipro-Buh estuary. Considering seemingly increasing prevalence of E.excisus infection, further studies are required to understand a pathophysiology of E.excisus infection  in mammals and humans, since data remain limited.

Catch rates reported by fishers are commonly used to understand the status of a fishery, but the reliability of fisher-reported data is affected by how they recall such information. Recalling catch may be influenced by the choice of reporting time period. Using interview data from fishers in Thailand, we investigated (1) how the time period for which fishers report their catch rates (e.g., per day or month) correlates with annual catch estimates and (2) the potential of recall bias when fishers reported multiple catch rates. We found that the annual catch estimates of fishers who reported on a shorter time period (haul, day) were significantly higher than those reported on a longer time period (month, year). This trend held true when individual fishers reported over multiple time periods, suggesting recall bias. By comparing fisher reports with external data sets, we identified that the mean across all reports was most similar to other data sources, rather than any time period. Our research has strong implications in using fishers’ knowledge for fisheries management.

IntroductionIn Brazil, hospital-based health technology assessment (HB-HTA) units have been implemented countrywide since early 2000 to improve decision-making processes. Multiple-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) can provide a deeper understanding of a given subject. The present study used MCDA to evaluate capacity building among HB-HTA units in Brazil.MethodsThis study analyzed preliminary data from a survey developed and sent to all HB-HTA units in Brazil in 2018. The survey comprised 116 questions covering a wide range of aspects. Initially, an expert panel was organized, and 46 objective questions (out of 116) were selected by four experts. Next, these experts classified the selected questions by weighting them according to their relative importance. A Likert scale was used to identify the levels of importance, which were converted to weights ranging from zero to one. The experts then defined a final importance score threshold of 60 percent to classify units as fully operational. Grades below this threshold indicated the need for a more detailed evaluation. Of the 80 survey questionnaires, 23 were evaluated by the proposed method.ResultsImportance weights for each classification were defined as follows: personnel (25%); level of expertise (31%); work production (31%); and infrastructure (13%). The mean final importance score for the HB-HTA units was 68 percent. The maximum and minimum scores achieved were 95 percent and 15 percent, respectively. The HB-HTA units had been established for an average of 6 years, and ten of the 23 units were classified as fully operational.ConclusionsThe multicriteria method presented by this study simplified HB-HTA unit evaluation, reducing the subjectivity of results. Final importance scores for each unit's categories indicated which areas need improvement. Results from the study indicated that infrastructure and personnel could be greatly enhanced, even though the production profile was satisfactory.

The Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis is an important fish species in both commercial and recreational fisheries. However, there is concern that perch populations in Central Europe are decreasing. This study aimed to assess the effects of environmental factors and management on recreational perch catches. Data from individual angling logbooks collected by the Czech Fishing Union on 229 fishing grounds during the period 2005–2016 were used in this study. In total, almost 60 000 perch weighing 17 500 kg were recorded. During the study period, total perch catches decreased by 60%, catch per fishing visit decreased by 70%, average body weight of caught perch increased by 18%, and percentage of fishing grounds with perch catches decreased by 13%. The results indicated that the decreasing catches were due to increasing fishing pressure. Further, fishing grounds with higher fishing visit rates had higher catches in general but lower catch per fishing visit. Larger and more productive rivers also showed higher catches. In contrast, the intensity of fish stocking did not affect catches. In conclusion, perch populations in Central Europe are likely under high fishing pressure, and the pressure is further increasing.
