Introduction.The study is aimed to determine possible use of vocal signal analysis for diagnosis of functional states in air traffic control operators, with justifying selection of informative parameters of intonation structure of speech.Materials and methods.Experiments on semi-natural simulator complex with participation of 16 air traffic male dispatchers modelled occupational activity of air traffic dispatcher with moderate (6 aircrafts controlled) and intense (7–12 aircrafts controlled) work load. Duration of simulated working shiftwas 6 hours. Registration covered characteristics of main vocal tone of the examinees, with calculation of 8 jitter-factors that portrayed mirco-changes of main vocal tone curve and 2 tremor indices disclosing periodic waves of 4–16 Hz in main vocal tone curve. Functional state of the dispatchers was assessed via cardiac rhythm parameters. Reliability and work capacity of the dispatchers corresponded to correct radio traffi c, changes in threshold of reception and transfer of aircrafts in number of allowable dangerous approach of aircrafts, time to detection of input aircraft’s deviation from preset flight line.Results and discussion.According to analysis of the experiments results, some parameters of the main vocal tone carried significant changes both in first (simulated moderate work load) and second (simulated intense work load) experimental series.The data obtained prove lower level of psychic regulation of the dispatchers’ occupational activity during 3rd to 5thhours of “working shift” in the first experimental series and from 2nd to 4thhours of the second experimental series, due to decreased psychophysiologic resources and developing fatigue.Conclusion.Studies of changes in indicators of intonation structure of speech in occupational activity of air traffic dispatchers demonstrated that using such indicators provides adequate diagnosis of the functional state. The most informative indicators are average value, histogram asymmetry and excessive frequency of main vocal tone, duration of pauses between words of the dispatchers’ commands and fi ft h jitter-factor.

1. Psychophysical experiments were initiated to determine the possible influence of increasing stimulus size on perceived pain intensity. Six trained human subjects (5 male, 1 female) made visual analogue scale (VAS) ratings for pain-sensation intensity and unpleasantness in response to nociceptive thermal stimuli. Test stimuli consisted of 5-s duration heat pulses (45-50 degrees C in 1 degrees increments) delivered by one, two, or three contact thermal probes (1 cm2 each) applied to the medial aspect of the anterior forearm. 2. The area of skin receiving noxious thermal stimuli was changed by randomly varying the number of thermodes activated. The effects of varying the distance between the thermal probes also were evaluated. In the first series of experiments, thermal-probe separation was kept close to 0; in subsequent experimental series, the thermodes were separated by either 5 or 10 cm. 3. In each experimental series, considerable spatial summation occurred in both pain-sensation intensity and unpleasantness dimensions of pain. This summation occurred throughout the nociceptive thermal range of 45-50 degrees C and was larger at suprathreshold temperatures (greater than or equal to 47 degrees C) than those near threshold (less than or equal to 46 degrees C). Unlike spatial summation of perceived warmth, that of pain was not characterized by systematic changes in power-function exponents but as approximately upward parallel displacements in double-logarithmic coordinates. 4. Thermal-probe separation over a range of 0-10 cm had no effects on spatial summation of pain-sensation intensity or pain unpleasantness. In contrast, increasing thermal-probe separation increased the subjects' ability to discriminate differences in stimulus size and their ability to detect correctly the number of thermal probes activated. 5. Because affective VAS ratings of unpleasantness were linearly related to, but distinctly and systematically less than, VAS ratings of pain-sensation intensity, it was clear that subjects responded quite differently to these two pain dimensions. Affective judgements were not additionally influenced by thermal probe separation and hence by the ability to perceive stimulus size or number of thermal probes activated. 6. The results indicate that powerful spatial-summation mechanisms exist for heat-induced pain. Spatial summation of pain is likely to be subserved both by local integration mechanisms at the level of single spinothalamic-tract neurons and by recruitment of central nociceptive neurons, because spatial summation of pain occurred to approximately equal extents under conditions of thermode separations over a distance of at least 20 cm.

ABSTRACT: Autogenic controls have significant influence on deep-water fans and depositional lobes morphology. In this work, we aim to investigate autogenic controls on the topography and geometry of deep-water fans. The influence of the sediment concentration of turbidity currents on deep-water fans morphology was also investigated. From the repeatability of 3D physical modeling of turbidity currents, two series of ten experiments were made, one of high-density turbidity currents (HDTC) and another of low-density turbidity currents (LDTC). All other input parameters (discharge, sediment volumetric concentration and grain size median) were kept constant. Each deposit was analyzed from qualitative and quantitative approaches and statistical analysis. In each experimental series, the variability of the morphological parameters (length, width, L/W ratio, centroid, area, topography) of the simulated deep-water fans was observed. Depositional evolution of the HDTC fans was more complex, showing four evolutionary steps and characterized by the self-channelizing of the turbidity current, while LDTC fans neither present self-channelizing, nor evolutionary steps. High disparities on the geometrical parameters of the fans, as characterized by the elevated relative standard deviation, suggest that autogenic controls induced a stochastic morphological behaviour on the simulated fans of the two experimental series.

This paper is concerned with loads and energy absorption during crushing of ship structures. Particular focus is on the effect of fracture of welds or parent material on the energy absorption of typical structural subassemblies of ships during deep collapse. The paper presents experiments and theories on the crushing response of typical strength elements. The theories are derived for an infinitely ductile material response and then consistently modified to include the effect of fracture. Theoretical formulas are compared with results of large-scale experiments performed at the Technical University of Denmark. The experimental series included 24 × and T aluminum and steel specimens scaled according to geometrical similarity and with a plate thickness varying between 2 and 20 mm. Theories and experiments demonstrate that the effect of fracture may be very significant for the loads and energy absorption in axial crushing of typical ship structural components. This effect of fracture has been neglected in previously published studies of bow crushing mechanics.

AbstractThe series of psychological explanations for the atrocities of Hitler’s Germany followed a development that started with the personality of the perpetrators and subsequently focused on the situation, almost to the exclusion of the person component. Milgram’s experimental series marks a turning point. His construct of destructive obedience claims a validity that transcends the Nazi context and has far-reaching implications for human behavior in hierarchies, irrespective of the political system. The merits of his approach can be understood in comparison and in connection with other theoretical and empirical venues that each provide a unique insight into the mechanisms underlying the Holocaust.

Three series of experiments were carried out. Each experiment consisted of six or seven tests where four or five containers were fitted with thermocouples and five were fitted with biological indicator units (BIU). The sterilization value (F0) delivered to cans of peas in brine was calculated from heat penetration data. The heat penetration data were analyzed for test-to-test reproducibility within each experimental series. Sterilization values for all tests were calculated from the BIU test results. The sterilizing values F0 (PHY) determined from physical (PHY) heat penetration data were compared with sterilizing values F0 (BIO) determined using the BIUs, both on the basis of accuracy and variability. The mean F0 (PHY) - F0 (BIO) was + 1.2 min. The mean coefficient of variation of the F0 (PHY) was 0.03 and the F (BIO) was 0.06.

1. The role of the efferent olivocochlear bundle (OCB) in protecting the inner ear from acoustic injury was studied in the anesthetized cat. Middle-ear muscles (MEM) were cut to eliminate possible effects of this feedback system on the auditory periphery. In each of a series of animals, the OCB was unilaterally transected. The animal was then exposed binaurally to an intense pure tone, and the resultant damage to the two sides compared by measuring threshold shifts in the compound action potential from each ear. Data from each animal provide one control measurement (threshold shift with an intact OCB) and one experimental measurement (threshold shift without a functional OCB). 2. Two experimental series were analyzed. In one the OCB was electrically stimulated, providing maximal firing rates in the efferents projecting to the control ear. In another series the OCB was not electrically stimulated: thus any OCB activity to the control ear was only that evoked by the acoustic stimulation itself. 3. In neither experimental series was there evidence that activity in the OCB provides protection from acoustic injury. These results are in disagreement with conclusions drawn from experiments with acoustic overstimulation of guinea pigs. 4. Interpretations for the discrepancy between the present study and those on guinea pigs include interspecies differences and the possible contribution of the MEM reflex or cochlear blood-flow changes to previously observed effects.
